Raiders waive player acquired in Moss trade

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 30, 2009 6:32 PM ET

They say you need three years to evaluate a draft class, but you don't need three full seasons to evaluate a trade.

So let's step on a limb and declare that Oakland's trade of Randy Moss for a fourth-round pick in 2007 wasn't Al Davis' best move, especially after the Raiders waived cornerback John Bowie Wednesday. (And yeah, we know Lane Kiffin pushed for it. Davis still pulled the trigger.)

Bowie the player Oakland selected with the pick acquired for Moss. The speedster -- is there another type of Raiders cornerback? -- didn't play much in his three years on the team, and struggled with knee injuries.

There was a report earlier Wednesday that Bowie was placed on injured reserve, but ESPN's Adam Schefter confirms that Bowie was waived.

It's not entirely fair to criticize Davis for the trade since Moss poisoned his situation in Oakland so thoroughly, but a second day pick for one of the greatest wide receivers of all time is a weak haul, no matter how you rationalize it.
