Bills: EJ Manuel drafted in part because of ability to "throw the ball in tough weather."

Speaking in a Tuesday radio interview, coach Doug Marrone said the Bills' decision to draft E.J. Manuel was due in part to the fact that they believed he could perform well in inclement weather.

That's a new one. Manuel apparently put on a show in stormy, windy conditions during his private workout for the Bills. "We started talking about the quarterbacks, and we went back and researched all the teams that played in the Northeast in the bad weather and all the success they had with quarterbacks and the common traits that they had," Marrone said. "They were big and had big hands and were able to throw the ball in tough weather." As helpfully pointed out by the Bills' website, Manuel had the largest hands (10 3/8″) of any quarterback at the Combine. If nothing else, Manuel's passes will cut through a stiff breeze better than Ryan Fitzpatrick's.

Did they explain why they drafted him probably 2-3 rounds early? For whatever round he was expected to go pre-draft, now consider that pretty much none of this year's top QB prospects went where they were expected.  Smith could have gone to as many as 3 different teams in the top 10 and dropped to #39  Nassib was rumored as high as #8 or as low as his "proper" spot in the top half of round 2 - certainly projected by most to go higher than Manuel - and dropped to round 4.  Barkley also dropped to round 4.

No one really knows for sure, but the way the draft played out, they drafted a QB at #15 overall that they probably could have grabbed in rounds 3 or 4 with little fanfare.

Let them explain that one away and, for their fans' sake, hope they can come up with something better than his big hands.  Because his hands are 1/8" shorter than Mark Sanchez's and he's sucked in any weather.

Sperm, maybe they wanted to prove to their fanbase that they were adamant about upgrading the QB position?  By drafting him round 1 they can say to the fanbase "see, now we have franchise QB."  I have no idea otherwise.

The Francessa approach: If the Jets really wanted him they would have trade up and took him 6th!

if you look at EJ Manuel's performance at Senior Bowl and his combine workouts, there's alot to like there. He's very athletic, his release is super fast. the league invited him to NYC with the intention he would go that first night. I don't think there's a scenario where EJ Manuel goes round 3 or 4. The Bills reached but only by about 5-10 slots.

When it comes to the leader of your team-if you like a guy, take him as soon as you can your hands on him.

The difference between getting your first choice and your second choice can be the difference between winning teams and losing teams.
