Why The Darrelle Revis Trade Was A Genius Move For The New York Jets

Less than a year after trading for him, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to unload Revis.

The team wants to get out from under his $16 million salary cap figure, either via a trade or an outright release, according to widespread reports.

It's a sizable disaster for Tampa. They wasted a 1st-round pick and spent ~$16 million in 2013 salary for 16 games of Revis, who was still not quite himself because of an ACL injury.

It highlights just how perfectly the New York Jets handled the Revis trade last year.

Here's the final tally on the trade:

Buccaneers got: Darrelle Revis (one season)

Jets got............ Sheldon Richardson (13th-overall pick). 2014 fourth-round pick

The Jets had to trade Revis because he was going to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, and it would have taken a cripplingly huge contract to keep him.

Usually the knowledge that a team has to trade a player takes away leverage, and forces them into a cents-on-the-dollar move. The Jets managed to avoid this trap, turning Revis into an affordable, long-term asset while also eliminating the risk that his injury issues posed going forward.

They traded him at the perfect time. If they waited until the fall, other teams would have seen what post-injury Revis looked like. If they had tried to traded him in August of September other teams would have just waited to sign him in 2014 free agency instead of giving up valuable assets in a trade.

It also helps that the Jets hit a home run on the 1st-round pick that they got from Tampa. Sheldon Richardson one NFL defensive rookie of the year. He and Muhammad Wilkerson give the Jets an elite unit that they can build on for years to come.

This should be the blueprint for how to handle a want-away star player. Shop him around early while he still has value, and pull the trigger when you get what you want.

Meanwhile, there are fans talking about Idzik has done nothing so far or how if he signs so-and-so they're done with him. Idzik is the man.

They would have had Richardson anyway. They wouldn't have taken Milliner if Revis was on the team. So they got Milliner plus a 4th. Still a good deal.

So So.  Milliner, despite his horrible learning curve, can be special.  Richardson has proved to be a Home Run!  So well done on those first 2 picks.  Ivory was a nice trade for the 4th rounder.  As for the rest of the draft, a BIG F.  The biggest disappointment in this draft is the signing of Eugene Smith BECAUSE you are basically committing to sticking with a QB for a number of years since you have wasted a #2 on him.  Eugene will be given every chance to succeed since he was chosen so high.  It will be a replay similar to Mark Sanchez.  Year after year after year after year......waiting for the qb to pay dividends and zilch.  This pick will be Idzik's demise as it was Tanny's having chosen Sanchez.

1st Round 9th overall (Assigned): Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama........... ...................B

1st Round 13th overall (from Revis trade): Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri.....A+

2nd Round 39th overall (Assigned): Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia.....................F-

3rd Round 72nd overall (Assigned): Brian Winters, OL, Kent State.......................D

5th Round 141st (Assigned): Oday Aboushi, OL, UVA..........................................D?

6th Round 178th (Assigned): William Campbell, DT, Michigan..............................D?

7th Round 215th (Assigned): Tommy Bohanon, FB, Wake Forest.........................D

Nothing genius about dropping a CB asking for 16 mil who's a fart away from a hold out.  Actually, it was a no-brainer.

i think what people are saying the fact that he was able to get what he got from the bucs when there was no other suitors is the impressive part

Meh, I think its more accurate to call Tampa idiots than it is to call Idzik a genius.  The move was a no-brainer.  Kudos to holding his ground and finding the suitor...far from genius IMO.

This x 1000

The true genius move that IdziK has made is deciding to keep Rex and not being a moron and firing him.

He deserves credit for turning the pick into what appears to be the best overall player in the draft.  That's the genius part, for me.

Guys just remember one thing. Curtis Martin retired as a Jet. This time next year, Revis will probably be looking his third team in three years. We got their hall of fame running back and they got a one year mercenary.

Which shows the Jets under Woody Johnson overvalued a 30+ back on the downside at the exact time that overpaying any back was cap foolishness. And failed to lock up long term the best corner in the NFL(ever?)in his prime at a time when their whole gameplan is predicated on having a superior defense. They may not lift a Lombardi, but the Pats are going to win the AFCE again. Genius, I tell you! This post has turned in a dayfrom a happy picnic into the internet equivalent of rotting dairy prodcucts mixed with dumpster juice on a July day.

You're a miserable SOB. Aw, Idzik didn't re-sign your favorite ex-Jet? Go cry to your mom. Adults are working in Florham Park.

Martin was good player. But overpaying him as they did was the move of a sentiumental dope. And perhaps if they did a little more than sample french toast at the Roscoe Diner and locked up Revis long term we wouldn't be looking at this mess. You get a trophy for winning football games not cap management.

Revis was offered a 10 yr/ $120 mil contract!! You make it sound like they thought of him as a #2 CB. They were guaranteeing him he would be the Best Paid CB for a decade!! What more could they have done?? It was then they began to realize there was no satisfying this guy... time to move on.
