Owusu Makes Most of Limited Opportunities

Chris Owusu

In terms of evaluating on-field performance heading in to this off-season, you won’t get a much smaller sample size to work with than the Jets will with Wide Receiver Chris Owusu.  The wideout played just 79 snaps in five games for Gang Green, but when he was on the field he took full advantage of the few opportunities he was presented.

Owusu, signed by the Jets after being let go by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in late September had registered just sixteen catches as he was buried deep down on Tampa Bay’s depth chart in just over two seasons.  When the Bucs chose to drop Owusu, the receiver hungry Jets decided  to give him a shot.

It was a week fifteen win at Tennessee when Owusu made what may very well be one of the best catches in the NFL this season.  It was only a seven yard grab on 3rd & 7 in the second quarter, but it showed incredible concentration and hands on the part of Owusu.  The receiver pulled in a pass while trying to make a leaping grab on a Geno Smith pass that sailed  high and he was grabbed and spun to the ground by Minnesota CB Josh Robinson.  As the ball popped popped high in the air while he was dragged down, Owusu located the ball and corralled it with his right arm before it hit the turf.  One play, just seven yards, but an eye-opening effort from Owusu.

Fast forward to week 17 in Miami, where Owusu was in on 28 plays, (a season high with the Jets) and managed to make another circus catch early on.  This time it was a leaping 36 yard grab in double coverage that helped set the tone in the first quarter of what would end up being the best game of QB Geno Smith’s career.  Owusu would eventually cap that same drive taking an end around from Smith down the right sideline.  Owusu covered 23 yards virtually untouched for his second career touchdown and a 7-3 Jets lead.  After his impressive grab and long touchdown run, Owusu wasn’t done.  He later tacked on an 87 yard kick return, giving him 146 total yards on the day.

A 6′ 195 lb speedster out of Stanford who posted a 4.36 40 at the NFL combine in 2012, Owusu clearly has the speed to succeed at this level.  If the plays he made in just a handful of chances this season is any indication, this could very well be a young player manages to stick around as the Jets look to re-build a roster in dire need of offensive playmakers.

Another young player that WRECKS, our 1/3 of a HC let rot on the PS and bench while he and his other two CS ignoramuses Mahty and Lal kept running the likes of Nelson, Salas and Graham out there on the field

Hopefully our new HC will not ignore the offense and ST entirely while concentrating on trying to make a 30 year old dated defense that the league figured out in 1987 work in 2014

Looks like he should have gotten a few extra reps, and he may become a solid player. However, Rex was his third HC and none of them have seen enough out if him so far to put him out there regularly, and his last HC who has been to a SB kicked him to the curb. I do agree with the premise that Rex often failed to give young guys a long enough look.

Let rot? He didn't exactly cause the Big Bang in the NFL, but he certainly had a couple of good grabs. So did Salas. So did Graham. I don't see why him not being on the field has anything to do with Rex. He was after all let go by the Bucs.

Gotta like what you see in this kid.

It would not bother me in the least if they let Harvin go (giving Seattle our 6th instead of 4th), saving millions on the overrated, injury prone, Holmes-like lockerroom presence of Harvin (per Minnesota and Seattle reporters and fans).

Maybe we should start a billboard:  "Save our 4th round pick: Release the overrated Percy"?

A healthy Harvin who is in camp this season is a far better option than a "what if" draft pick. Id give up the 4th and keep Harvin.

"a HEALTHY Harvin"

Bwahahahahaha.  In your dreams.  The guy is an injury magnet.  Not worth anything close to his current contract.  Well at least his migraines have dissipated over the last couple of years.  Instead of getting migraines, he gives them to management through his abrasive locker room presence.  Holmes II. Keep the 4th round pick.  Percy aint worth it.

Instead lets draft WRs similar to the ones drafted in the 2014 draft how did that work out for us?

Remember at mid-season when Salas was going to breakout and he had like the highest ypc or something in the league?  Remember that?  Now we are crucifying the coach for not playing a scrap heap kid that was still learning the offense.  He is an interesting kid, but has concussion issues.  He will be in the mix at camp, but he was at SF, SD and Tampa before.  They may cut Harvin, but if this kid factors into it heaven help us.

Salas was often injured and just another JAG Harvin is a playmaker.

So its Harvin or poorly reasoned draft picks?  Those are the only two options in your mind?  LOL, you're kidding right?.

How about drafting some good WRs as well as other talent?  That's the whole idea behind eliminating Idzik.  Harvin is a waste and gets injured getting out of bed in the morning. Just say no to wasting a 4th rounder on him only to have him injured 50% of the time, a locker room cold sore 85% of the time and unproductive as a WR on the field for most of the small amount of time he is out there.  Maybe for $2-3 million and a 6th, but definitely not for $10 million and our 4th.  Harvin is not worth anything close to that.  Seattle got it right and Idzik/Woody f'd up on that acquisition.

Please list all the "playmaker" plays he made for the Jets in his short time with us.

The guy spent more time on the bench in Minnesota and Seattle than on the field.  The best plays he made were reverses and trick plays.  As for a reliable WR...  not too much.  Both Minnesota and Seattle knew what they were doing when they discarded him.  Santonio Holmes II.

Who said anything about Gates?  Why would you put words in another poster's mouth like that?  Is that how you learned how to debate an issue?

You might try responding to the points actually made instead of suggesting that I said something nowhere near to what I actually said.  Is this your usual M.O. in replying to opinions with which you don't agree?  Pretty lame JW12.  In fact, feeble.

Hey, can this get back on to Owusu? Not Harvin, Gates....

The kid did exactly what one can hope for, he made the best out of his opportunities when he was on the field, no excuses, he did what every coach and fan wants... He produced when he was given the chance and that is exactly what you want to see from a player.

Hopefully he will stick around till camp and continues to produce.
