The Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco have done a little business ahead of the start of free agency.

Flacco signed a new three-year contract extension on Wednesday, the team announced. The new deal would keep the quarterback under team control through the 2021 season. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Flacco received a signing bonus of $40 million in the new deal.

Watch:

The new deal was expected. When Flacco, 31, signed a huge contract after the Ravens' Super Bowl XLVII win over the 49ers in 2013, the deal was backloaded against the salary cap in a manner that all but demanded renegotiation after the 2015 season. If Flacco played under his previous deal this upcoming season, he'd count a whopping $28.6 million against the cap. Only Drew Brees ($30 million with New Orleans) counted more against his team's cap.

Flacco had his season cut short last year, suffering a torn ACL in a Week 11 win against theRams. He had surgery in December, and is expected to be ready for the start of the 2016 season.

The Ravens need all the help they can get. They have the second smallest amount of cap space in the league with free agency exactly one week away. It was reported last week that an extension could slice Flacco's cap number by as much as $9 million.

With Flacco taken care of, the Ravens can fully focus on getting a deal done with a player who helps take care of the quarterback. Standout guard Kelechi Osemele is an impending free agent who will command big dollars. We'll see if Flacco's new deal paves the way for Osemele's return.

This isn't surprising. Flacco isn't going anywhere, and they needed to make cap space.

They had to let go 3 or 4 very useful players the last time he signed his mega deal, Joe Flacco is not not enough of a difference maker to be rated and thus given that much money and security.  Balt will suck for a number of years in my opinion.

Wow, Flacco has almost single handedly handicapped that team since his first big one. What are they thinking?

Welcome to the 21st century NFL....land and pay the QB, whatever is left over can trickle down to the other 52 roster spots.

Definitely not the wisest of moves...

It's the show the folks in the stands want/wanted. They wanted offense, more specifically passing offense, and have gotten it.

There are not many people on the planet who enjoy, let alone can handle, trying to throw a ball to specific locations while multiple 300+ pound roided up males are trying to bring you down. It costs alot of time and money to find and keep one.

I can guarantee you that the fans of Denver were happy to win the big one on the back of their defense rather than their broken QB.  It all comes down to teams figuring out who a real franchise guy is who you pay and keep happy no matter what vs a medium qb that has some success that is not going to carry you on his own.

Denver spent at least $18 million dollars on the QB position last year.

And they won pretty well purely due to their defense.  If Petyon were to hang around and get another 18-20 million would they be able to keep Miller and any one else they deem important to also have to look at their heir apparent?

The league is about 1 position.  Dont let the Broncos D fool you (while they were paying Manning a kings ransom).  It's all about one position in this league.

True, but it doesn't mean you hamstring your whole team by paying a medium QB who has had some success like he is an actual real franchise guy.  It takes guts to say nope, you may have won a super bowl with this team but we are not overpaying and terming you when you can;'t out right win us games almost on your own.  There are a handful of those type of QB's around and an ever increasing hoard of medium to semi good ones that are being paid like they are the franchise.

Well, let me ask you this?  What's the alternative?  Not paying?  That wont work or you wont have a QB.

What team with a great QB, hasnt paid an an asinine amount?  Guys like Matt Ryan and Jay Culter are making money hand over fist.  It kind of is what it is, you just have to hope you sign one that can actually win the big game.

Say what you want about Flacco, he's a winner.  And he's proven that he can elevate him game on the big stage.  That's hard to find.

5-11, 10-6, 8-8 the last three years.  Mark Sanchez was a winner, eli is a winner, lots of medium level QB's have their moments with short burst of good play and a well rounded team behind them.  We will just have to agree to disagree on this point.  Guys like Bradford and cousins are heading to the bank for massive paydays without proving anything at all.  The Jets are about to quite possibly over pay for our successful QB from last year, (he did indeed have a good year last year by many metrics.)

He wasnt 5-11 last year he was 3-7. ;-)   The year he went 8-8 (following a Super Bowl win) and last year are the only years he didnt make the playoffs since entering the league.

Sanchez got inappropriately paid with a contract extension.  Eli makes a boat load of money and got what, a 65mil signing bonus?

And Bradford and Cousins are exactly the point.  It is what it is.  You have to pay to play.  And unfortunately, QB's good and bad, make a sh*t ton of money because the league is all about, 1 position.

The Jets dont have a choice.  Well, they do.  They can roll with Geno or Petty if they dont want to pay Fitz.  That's the type of choices teams have when it comes to QBs.  Pay or roll out a bag of sh*t.

This is the NFL.

Well you do have a choice though if you have owner backing are secure in your job and have the balls.  Granted all of that is rare these days.

Kirk cousins?  Gee kirk you have had 1/2 year of nice success we like you, here is a fair offer.  Don't like it?  Go ahead and walk.  Bradford?  See ya.

Now all of this is cap dependent and such for sure.  I hate seeing jag QB's cash in in a fashion that can hand cuff you like Sanchez did here.  At least the Eagles seem able to get away from Bradford if they have to in a year.

What better way is there to build a dynastic flag football team?

If you don't have a decent qb, you're handicapped right off the bat.  It's THE most important position on the field.

Of course he's going to get paid.

What is decent?  Is Tannehill decent?  Cousins?  Bradford?  Sanchez?  Flacco?

I still don't think you can just shrug your shoulders and pay a QB a ton of money with a huge commitment just because he is decent.  I do think there are spots in between really good and crap that you do not have to over pay for and perhaps lose better players as a result.

Lets look at the Jets, Fitz was at least decent last year, is it worth to have to shed one of our Dlineman because we need to pay him?  I just don't think the issue is that cut and dried.

What if told you that rolling out a bag of crap could lead to gold?

They were less than a mil under the cap I think.  The bonus just gave them 9 mil of room.

Joe Flacco is decent.  the others, well that's entirely up to their organization to determine their value.
