I think it's in the Jets best interest to put a stop to this bullsh*tt and announce that they've rescinded the offer to Fitz. It will give a clear message to the players that this is how it's going to be, and to focus on doing their job as best they can without the QB distraction. The one thing I disagree with Bowles and Big Mac thus far is announcing that a QB not on the roster is the starter. Big mistake.

Villain The Foe
Winners, losers from this week's minicamps, OTAs 82 By Gregg Rosenthal Around The NFL Editor Published: June 10, 2016 at 07:01 p.m. Updated: June 13, 2016 at 09:08 a.m. Five teams wrapped up their offseason this week, with the other 27 teams ready to go on vacation after next week. Here are our biggest movers of the week. Winners Bengals offense: Giovani Bernard was one of the five to seven best running backs in football last year. Few players more consistently opponents miss in space and few running backs are better in the passing game. In a league where nearly every down is a passing down, Bernard's three-year, $15.5 million contract is an absolute bargain. While Andy Dalton lost Hue Jackson,Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu this offseason, the Bengals still have two quality running backs, a top-tier tight end, and an outstanding offensive line. It's mostly a young group. The sustained success in Cincinnati shows no signs of slowing down. Vive le Mike Brown! Niners beat writers: Colin Kaepernick's first news conference of the offseason featured a genuine attempt at connecting with other humans. After 18 minutes of chatter, including once asking for more questions, a reporter noted to Kaepernick it had to be the longest news conference of his life. "I'm going for records this year," Kaepernick said to the overeager laughter of people who have never seen Kaepernick smile. A looser Kaepernick hardly guarantees success. But he sounded like a man who knows he'll have a chance to fit well in Chip Kelly's system and knows he didn't play well last year. Next for Kaepernick is gaining some weight, then an uphill battle for the Week 1 starting job. We wouldn't be too concerned with who will be the September starter. Both Gabbert and Kaepernick should get a chance to show what they can do. Geno Smith: With Ryan Fitzpatrick still undecided about his future, Geno Smith continues to benefit from the first-team reps in Jets practice, where he reportedly has performed well (yes, I remain the last member of Geno Nation). We also learned that Smith practiced twice a week with Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry earlier this offseason -- workouts that will continue in July. Talent recognizes talent. Jimmie Ward: After struggling to get on the field early last season, the 2014 first-round pick finished the season strong with snaps in the slot. Jimmie Ward appears to be a favorite of the new 49ers staff, too, after moving from safety, consistently getting starting cornerback snaps along with Tramaine Brock. Unheralded third-year player Chris Davis has received the most snaps in the slot. Jay Ajayi fever: Get ready for that average draft position in fantasy leagues to keep climbing. With this week's report that the Dolphins' interest in Arian Foster is mild at best, Ajayi looks like an even safer bet to be Miami's primary running back in his second season. Rookie Kenyan Drake is the favorite to be the team's backup. Leodis McKelvin and Rueben Randle, Philadelphia Eagles: We try to avoid overrating the endless barrage of offseason plaudits, but sometimes the kudos indicate playing time. Eaglescoach Doug Pederson said that cornerback McKelvin "stood out the most" during the offseason program. More importantly, he got all the starter snaps during OTAs and minicamp practices along with Ron Brooks. Last year's starters Nolan Caroll and Eric Rowe remain on the team, but are not certain to start (McKelvin and Brooks have played under Jim Schwartz before). On offense, Pederson highlighted Rueben Randle as someone that is emerging at wide receiver. Pederson admitted that Jordan Matthews is better off lining up in the slot and Josh Huff no longer has Chip Kelly's support. Randle looks like a good bet to start. People who love tiresome Von Miller stories: While we sift through competing agendas including reports about sitting out the season, semantic arguments about the word "rejected," and fake deadlines, Miller and the Broncos inch closer to a deal. The real deadline is July 15 and Miller will be paid a lot of money. Wake me up when that happens. Seahawks rookie running backs: It's way too early to make judgments on rookies, but it is hard to forsee a scenario where Seattle's rookie runners Alex Collins and C.J. Prosise don't have real roles on the team's offense. Even if Thomas Rawls is fully recovered from his ankle surgery, it's easy to imagine Prosise getting major snaps as the third-down back while Collins is the team's primary backup. Losers Saints pass rush: New Orleans was hurting for defensive ends this offseason, which was part of the reason they moved 2015 second-rounder Hau'oli Kikaha to an edge pass rushing position this offseason. With Kikaha out for the season, the beleaguered defense is going back to the drawing board. Second-year player Obum Gwacham and Kasim Edebali are the top options to rush the passer opposite Cameron Jordan, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The Saints have a few more promising piece than people realise (Jordan, Sheldon Rankins, Stephone Anthony, much of the secondary) but their problem areas are massive. This makes a weak spot weaker. Certainty on Aqib Talib's status: Talib's gunshot wound raises a few questions for the Broncos. The team has been "getting a handle" on Talib's potential return to the fieldbased on his physical status, but coach Gary Kubiak won't say any more publicly. The Broncos will also wait for legal matters to play out before knowing if Talib will face a possible suspension. Austin Seferian-Jenkins' mentions:The Bucs tight end could be getting passed on the depth chart by upstart Cameron Brate. Couple that with Jenkins' removal from the fieldthis week by his coach, and you have the recipe for some criticism on Twitter for the third-year player. Just know that if you come at ASJ on Twitter, he is going to come back strong. This is the most printable response we could find from Friday: @CoachClark78 @TH_Natural I love your mom â Austin Seferian J (@Aesj88) June 10, 2016 Eugene Monroe's chances of staying on the Ravens: The Ravens' left tackle announced on Twitter that he was given clearance to practice following his shoulder surgery. But does he have a job? Asked about rookie Ronnie Stanley, coach John Harbaugh had this to say: "He's the sixth pick in the draft," Harbaugh said. "I expect him to start." But could he wind up at guard? "Did you see him working at guard today?" Harbaugh answered. The answer, of course, is no. Harbaugh provided cover by saying Stanley still has to earn the starting job, but it would be a surprise if the Ravens don't move on from Monroe's $6.5 million salary eventually. We'll be back next week to wrap up offseason work before going into a seven-week slumber before training camp.

And they still haven’t re-signed starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The two sides remain entrenched in their respective positions, with no sign that either side is planning to blink. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News recently suggested that the Jets could decide to move on from Fitzpatrick, sooner than later. The “sooner” could come later this week, if the Jets like what they see from Geno Smith during the minicamp practices. It may sound outlandish, but keep this in mind. Last year at this time, Smith was the starter — even though offensive coordinator Chan Gailey had previously coached Fitzpatrick in Buffalo. It wasn’t until I.K. Enemkpali broke Smith’s jaw in two places that Fitzpatrick took the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. Maybe Smith, who quietly accepted the fact last season that he was Wally Pipped by an unexpected pop in the chin, is ready to take over from Fitzpatrick the position he had been given over Fitzpatrick a year ago. Villain The Foe
Bowles: Geno Smith 'Light Years Ahead' Posted 4 hours ago Eric AllenSr. Reporter/Director, Internet ProgrammingEmail @eallenjets On the Inside Jets QB Intends on Taking Advantage of Every Rep How much difference does a year make for Geno Smith? “Being in the system a year, he’s light years ahead of where he was last year,” Jets head coach Todd Bowles said today. “As far as being confident, operating the system and understanding the checks and running the offense, he’s night and day where he was.” Smith, who also led the Jets’ first-team offense last spring, said Chan Gailey’s unit talked about goals on Day 1 of the team’s minicamp. “Having a better grasp and knowledge of the offense, seeing how it worked, talking to Chan and going over situations and scenarios. Those are the things that we are improving upon right now and we’re really big on the situations right now,” he said. “We have to improve at situational football, we have to improve in the red zone, two-minute. We talked about goals today and where we want to be as an offense during the season, and I think every single rep that we get in practice is another chance for us to improve on that.” The Jets have continued to state their desire to re-sign free Ryan Fitzpatrick. But Smith, a two-year NFL starter for the Jets who has thrown for 5,683 yards with 27 TD, has had a solid offseason and the team continues to push ahead. “It doesn’t hinder our offensive planning at all,” Bowles said of Fitz’s absence. “We’re going full speed ahead right now. Like I said, if he got hurt, Geno would be the starter and we would have to play. And he’s learning the system right now and he’s getting better at it, so whether it’s Fitz or whether it’s Geno — we’re doing the same things we need to do.”
Villain The Foe
Joe Namath: Geno Smith will be Jets' starting quarterback Photo: Scott Halleran/Getty Images by SI Wire Email Posted:Tue Jun. 14, 2016 Your teams. Your favorite writers. Wherever you want them. Personalize SI with our new App. Install on iOS or Android. New York Jets legend Joe Namath believes Geno Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback this season. Speaking at an event honoring vice president Joe Biden, Namath said Smith will be the Jets’ starter even if Ryan Fitzpatrick returns. “I think Geno’s going to be the starting quarterback no matter if Fitzpatrick comes back or not,” Namath said, via Newsday. Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a surprising 10–6 season in 2015. The journeyman quarterback enjoyed a career year, posting career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. However, Fitzpatrick and the Jets have been embroiled in a contract dispute since the end of the season, with the free-agent quarterback seeking more money. “We talk about Fitzpatrick not signing a contract with the Jets,” Namath said. “Well, you got to figure as smart as he is, he just doesn’t recognize that it’s important to play with a good team. Last year was the first time he played with a good team in his career, and he excelled.” • FARRAR: Raiders have pieces to return to postseason Smith was supposed to be the Jets’ opening day starter last year, but was injured at the start of the season after being punched in the face by a teammate. Fitzpatrick remained the starter after leading New York to a 4–1 start. In 31 career games, Smith has completed 57.9% of his passes, with 27 touchdowns, 35 interceptions and seven fumbles. Villain The Foe
Geno Smith finds comfort zone in awkward situation Updated June 14, 2016 6:23 PM By Bob Glauber bob.glauber@newsday.com + - New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith talks to the media in the locker room before minicamp on Tuesday June 14, 2016. Photo Credit: Andrew Theodorakis Bob Glauber Glauber has been Newsday's national football columnist since 1992. He was Newsday's football writer covering the Jets and email twitter HIGHLIGHTS Jets QB for the present saying all the right things as Ryan Fitzpatrick remains unsigned Geno Smith’s main concerns are mastering the playbook and improving FLORHAM PARK, N.J. It is a clumsy, uncomfortable dynamic inside the Jets’ locker room, where unsigned quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s locker still sits empty, as if the Jets are sending a not so subtle message that this is still his team, even if he isn’t here. Latest columns Glauber: Fitzpatrick gridlock will end in a deal Glauber: Namath throws support behind Sanchez Glauber: Retiring Tuck a Giant on, off field Glauber: Hackenberg expands Jets’ QB puzzle Glauber: Giants lose chance to pick LB Floyd Across the room stands Geno Smith, the presumptive starter if negotiations with Fitzpatrick collapse under the weight of unrealistic financial demands. It is Smith’s fourth season at that locker, having endured a convulsive set of experiences that includes two mostly unspectacular years as a starter and another as a stunned observer after the punch-out by IK Enemkpali. As the rest of the locker room waits for what certainly feels like an eventual reunion with Fitzpatrick, Smith insists the situation isn’t as awkward — or downright weird — as the circumstances would suggest. “Honestly, it’s not,” Smith said calmly in front of his locker before Tuesday’s opening practice of a three-day minicamp. “I don’t come into the building thinking about [Fitzpatrick’s situation]. I don’t leave the building thinking about that. My only goal when I walk in this building is how can I get better today. How can this team improve? How can this offense improve? What did we do last week? What did we do in the last practice we need to improve on?” JetsJets minicamp photos It is a nuanced and mature outlook from a 25-year-old not known for being nuanced or mature through much of his career. But as he approaches perhaps his final season with the Jets, he can take advantage of the unique circumstances that make him the No. 1 quarterback. Even if it appears only a matter of time before Fitzpatrick emerges with a new deal and a return engagement as the Jets’ starter. Smith has looked mostly solid through the offseason workouts, appearing more comfortable in his second year under coordinator and quarterback whisperer Chan Gailey. Leading an offense with Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and Matt Forte, the best set of skill players since he came to the Jets in 2013, Smith seems to have flourished. But we’ve seen this before from Smith. He looks good at this time of year, but not so much when the regular season starts. And if by chance the Fitzpatrick situation doesn’t result in a new contract and his return as the starter, then it is natural to view Smith’s chances skeptically. “I’m going to continue to put my best foot forward, continue to work hard, continue to do all the things I think I need to progress as well as helping this team progress at this juncture,” Smith said. Vote Vote: Who will start at QB in Week 1 for the Jets? Ryan Fitzpatrick Geno Smith Bryce Petty Christian Hackenberg Someone else Show results Has he needed to re-establish himself as a locker-room leader after absorbing last year’s sucker punch and subsequent demotion? Not necessarily, he insists. “I don’t think I need to re-establish myself rather than to prove it every single day in practice, prove it to my coaches, teammates, whoever’s watching,” he said. “My goal is to compete every single day with everyone out there and try to contribute to the best of my ability.” He speaks carefully now and is more than willing to drop some clichés, which speaks to Smith’s uncertain stature within the organization. But it wasn’t all that long ago he was viewed as the Jets’ quarterback of the future, a second-round pick out of West Virginia who had general manager John Idzik’s stamp of approval. But with Idzik gone and Mike Maccagnan in his place, there is no allegiance to Smith, who immediately would become Fitzpatrick’s backup. And with Maccagnan’s own draft picks — fourth-rounder Bryce Petty in 2015 and second-rounder Christian Hackenberg this year — Smith is being squeezed from all sides. His experience means there’s still a place for him on this year’s roster — with or without Fitzpatrick — but beyond that, there are no guarantees. That’s why it is day to day, practice to practice for Smith, who is consumed with learning Gailey’s playbook, not his uncomfortable position in the locker room. And if Smith does turn out to be coach Todd Bowles’ guy, then so be it. “Being in the system a year, he’s light years away from where he was last year,” Bowles said after practice. “As far as being confident, operating the system, learning the checks and running the offense, he’s night and day from where he was.” Smith takes nothing for granted. “It’s important to stay inside that playbook,” Smith said. “You can never be too good at it. You can never have a good enough grasp of it. I’m going to continue to work hard.” For now, this is Smith’s team once again, and he’s delighted to occupy the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. As long as it lasts, anyway.

Villain The Foe
With Geno Smith leading way at mini-camp, Jets sending ominous signals facebook 16 Tweet email Geno Smith is confident he can succeed as starting quarterback and help the Jets improve. (ROBERT SABO/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS) Geno Smith’s implied message to Jets Nation freaking out over the Fitz Follies: Don’t worry, I got this. Each day of the Ryan Fitzpatrick contract stalemate gives Smith another opportunity to convince everybody that the Jets can be successful with him starting at quarterback. “I have to prove that every day to my teammates, but I do have confidence always,” Smith said Tuesday. “I notice guys do have confidence in me as well. I think they have expressed that. My goal as the quarterback is just to continue to lead these guys, score points and do whatever we need to do to be a good team and a good offense.” It might make Jets fans cringe, but if Smith doesn’t believe in Smith, who will? Revis a smart cornerback — time for him to make smart adjustments Smith sounds like he’s finally growing up after the non-stop turbulence he’s experienced in his three years with the Jets. But as the backup plan at quarterback, he is still Fitz’s best leverage to get Mike Maccagnan to improve his contract offer. “The only message I want to send is on game day,” Smith said. “Between the white lines is where I can do my best talking.” It’s so typical Jets that they are the only team in the NFL that doesn’t have its starting quarterback signed, with camp opening on July 27. Regardless of how Smith plays in this week’s mini-camp — June practice in shorts and no shoulder pads means little — it’s not an overnight process to win back the locker room after 27 TDs and 35 INTs in his two years as the starter in 2013-14; missing that team meeting in San Diego when he got his time zones screwed up and was at the movies; and then getting his jaw busted by teammate IK Enemkpali last summer in a locker room fight. Lil Wayne has seizure mid-flight forcing plane to land The Jets have offered Fitzpatrick a three-year $24 million deal with $12 million in the first year and $6 million in each of the last two years with $3 million guaranteed in 2017. No deal. Fitzpatrick will take the $12 million if the Jets cut the offer down to a one-year deal. No deal. Advantage: Smith. They had a lot to talk about. The starting quarterback was not around. And although Mo Wilkerson continues to show up to get treatment on his broken leg and was around Tuesday, he has not yet signed his franchise tender and reportedly may not be showing up for the start of training camp on July 27. The Jets clearly have no interest in signing Wilkerson to a long-term deal and will not be influenced by the six-year $103 million contract — with $63 million in guarantees — the Eagles just gave defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. In five years, Wilkerson has 361/2 sacks and 184 tackles. In four years, Cox has 22 sacks and 159 tackles. Wilkerson was the Jets’ best defensive player last season, but they are not committing to him long-because they are working the system and can franchise him again next year. Wilkerson might feel he has a better argument now after Cox signed, but the Jets don’t have to do a thing. JetBlue offers free Orlando flights for family of victims Still, in a quarterback’s league, it all comes back to Fitz and Smith. Todd Bowles says if Fitzpatrick is not there for the start of camp, nothing changes. He will treat it as an injury and move on. The Jets have a brutal first six games — Bengals, at Bills, at Chiefs, Seahawks at home, at Steelers, at Cardinals — so it may not matter who lines up as the first-team quarterback. The Jets could be looking at 1-5, then signal to the bullpen to get Christian Hackenberg ready for 2017. Bowles continues to talk up Smith. What else is he going to say? “Being in the system a year, he’s light years ahead of where he was last year,” he said. “As far as being confident, operating the system, understanding the checks, running the offense, he’s night and day where he was.” Smith was recently working out with Odell Beckham Jr., Antonio Brown and Jarvis Landry in Florida. Meanwhile, Brandon Marshall has said he hasn’t been sneaking off to Fitzparick’s backyard catching passes to keep him sharp. Follow the Daily News Sports on Facebook. "Like" us here. Villain The Foe
What Geno Smith gained from throwing to Odell Beckham, Antonio Brown this offseason New York Jets wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins (10) misses a pass during the Jets minicamp practice at Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. 6/14/16 (Andrew Mills | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) Andrew Mills | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com PrintEmail By Dom Cosentino | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Email the author | Follow on Twitter on June 15, 2016 at 7:03 AM, updated June 15, 2016 at 7:21 AM FLORHAM PARK — Jets quarterback Geno Smith didn't have many specifics to share about his offseason throwing sessions with a group in his native Miami that included wideouts Odell Beckham Jr. of the Giants, Antonio Brown of the Steelers, and Jarvis Landry of the Dolphins. Jets QBs, offense working at minicampJets quarterbacks Geno Smith, Christian Hackenberg, Bryce Petty working during the Jets minicamp session with wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. 6/14/16 (Andrew Mills | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com) The workouts, which also included Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes, were first reported last week by theMiami Herald. "Just staying fresh in the offseason," Smith said. "Odell knows some of my boys, so we all hang out together. We talk football. A lot of South Florida guys, a lot of guys in this locker room come down." Smith is the Jets' presumptive starter at the moment with Ryan Fitzpatrick still in contract limbo. Smith, Brown, and Rhodes all grew up in the Miami area. Landry is Beckham's best friend and former LSU teammate. Bowles: Geno 'light years ahead' of last year The head coach weighs in. "A lot of the guys grew up together," Smith said. "We've known each other a long time, been friends a long time. We've been competing since, like, junior high school. It's no different now than it was then." Landry had told the Herald that Brown had the wideouts working on footwork drills, in addition to some one-on-one work against Rhodes. Jets head coach Todd Bowles—a firmer player himself—didn't mind that Smith got together with players from other teams to work out. "Guys work out in the offseason, especially down in Florida," Bowles said. "They're just playing catch; it's no different than me and me kids being in the yard. Everybody runs the same routes; it's just pitch and catch and a guy throwing him the ball." Dom Cosentino may be reached at dcosentino@njadvancemedia.com. Follow him on Twitter @domcosentino. Villain The Foe
Getty Images 3 observations from New York Jets June 14 mini camp CHRISTOPHER NIMBLEY Yesterday at 10:06 PM Three observations from the first day of Jets mandatory mini camp FLORHAM PARK, NJ - The Jets started their first day, of three, of mandatory mini camp today with no progress towards a return of Muhammad Wilkerson or Ryan Fitzpatrick but despite the media's obsession with the two players not under contract the Jets practiced anyway. As Todd Bowles says all he can do is "focus on the players that are here." The players that are here are far from a perfect product, but you can tell that collectively the team is way ahead of where they were last year. The players are louder in their communication, more confident in their roles and they are playing at a much faster speed. There's still inconsistency from every position group on the field, but there's a lot of positives for the Jets to focus on and we'll start with three tidbits from today's practice. WR Jalin Marshall - Jalin Marshall turned in his best practice of his professional career today. He ran crisp, clean routes, found multiple ways to get open and caught everything within his reach. Marshall flashed a ton of ability and potential in college but was limited in his routes and playing time, he should've stayed another year in college but his decision not to could benefit the Jets greatly down the line. Jalin Marshall seems like an early favorite to earn a spot on, at least, the practice squad and if he can develop while watching and learning from veterans like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker there is clearly potential there to turn into a solid NFL receiver down the road. Today he showed off his speed, quickness in and out of cuts, and his strong hands. He's definitely a player to keep an eye on in training camp. S Doug Middleton - Safety Doug Middleton was another player who turned heads today. He made a great play to intercept Geno Smith, Smith tried to hit Decker on a deep post route but he never saw Middleton shading over the top. The throw was a little too far inside and Middleton jumped right in front of the route and came away with an impressive interception. A little later Middleton burst through the offensive line immediately and as Christian Hackenberg was getting ready to rush his throw Middleton swatted it right out of his hand. Middleton, a rookie out of Appalachian State, was constantly in the right position and making plays around the ball. He was easily one of the standout players on the day and will need more days like today to ensure he makes the final roster. Quarterbacks inconsistency - Smith continues to be, by far, the best quarterback on the field but today was probably his most inconsistent practice of the offseason. He was the most consistent of the three, not surprising of course, and overall made far more impressive plays than bad plays. Smith is clearly more comfortable and confident but one of the most noticeable improvements is the way he has been successfully throwing from different arm angles when he has to. He's incorporated a jump pass/sidearm throw to weave the ball through the defense in tight spots and with Matt Forte and Bilal Powell as the lead running backs it's something you might see a lot of this year is Fitzpatrick doesn't end up returning. Bryce Petty and Hackenberg continue to look like overwhelmed young quarterbacks still trying to get a feel for playing in the NFL, which is okay because it's how we should expect them to look. Petty started off strong, looking to build off of the last voluntary OTA practice the media saw, but quickly fell right back into one bad throw after another. In 11-on-11's he started off with a gorgeous 25 yard pass down the sideline over the shoulder of Charone Peake, just over Kevin Short's outstretched hands, for an impressive completion. The next play was a nice rip, right through a tight window of defenders 10 yard hook to Jace Amaro. But the next two throws is where he fell off the rails and he never recovered. The next pass sailed a good 15 yards out of bounds, nowhere near the intended receiver, and the one after that he tried to hit a 15 yard out but was also picked off by linebacker Bruce Carter. Hackenberg made a few nice throws here and there, as he always does, but the large majority of his throws either sailed high and wide or skipped low in the dirt. As we will continue to say Hackenberg has the tools to maybe one day become a good starting quarterback but that day is years away.

They're not the only ones who seem not to believe in Geno Smith. Eric Decker had a incredibly difficult response when even mentioning Geno Smith. Hopefully Geno takes advantage of being dismissed and overlooked. Actually, that's the best time to strike because people wont expect it. Perfect example why you should never get high on peoples praise of you or down on peoples criticism.

I'm going to give the Jets a call today and let them know I've been overlooked at QB and it's the best time for me to strike.
