I'm surprised they haven't brought Ochi back on the roster to protect him from getting poached when the season is over.  He is a small school pass rusher that was on the cusp of making the Ravens.  Borderline player now, but certain to be in a camp next year.  Hopefully, the Jets.

It was my understanding that players on the PS at the end of the season still belong to the team as long as they offer them contracts (or something like that); you can only poach them during the year if you are willing to put them on the active roster for 3 weeks (I wonder with less than 3 weeks left in the season if they are safe; anyone know?) and the club gets first chance to sign them to a futures contract - although I couldn't find a link proving this...

That is what I was talking about.  I don't think the player has to be on the active roster three weeks.  I think they just have to give him 3 checks at that rate.  It used to be a thing at the end of the year, but the rules may have changed. I thought they usually got "futures" contracts FWIW.

If it was just 3 checks teams would poach all of the time and the other team couldn't stop it. The reason for the active roster is that a team has to be serious about stealing a player as it takes a limited spot. Interesting, wonder what the story really is.

They can. It doesn't make much sense to pick a guy up off a practice squad unless you like him because they are developmental guys.

Quote
  • Practice squad players are free to sign with other NFL teams, but they have to be signed to the 53-man active roster of the acquiring team. A practice squad player cannot be signed to another practice squad unless he is first released.
  • A practice squad player can not sign with his team's upcoming opponent, unless he does so six days before the upcoming game or 10 days if his team is currently on a bye week.
  • If a practice squad player is signed to the active roster, he will receive a minimum of three weekly paychecks, even if he is released before spending three weeks with the new team.

Yeah, you usually see a bunch of futures contracts given out right after the season is over

Interested to see what Shell's got.  Would obviously be huge if he can step in and take that RT Role next year.  Time for Macc's draft picks to put up or shut up.

Yes, I would like to see how he's improved (if at all).

But I WANT the Jets to take a OT early. One with potential to be a starting LT at the NFL level. One of the reasons Shell was available in the 5th round was b/c he is project to be a RT at best. He has good size and arm length but the skinny on him is that he simply does not have the quickness or athleticism to play LT.

So what does that mean for Shell? Well, if the Jets take an OT early in the second round (or late in the first via trade down), let's say Ryan Ramcyzk out of Wisconsin falls to them, that's a guy right there that can step in and start at RT and his potential is considerably higher than Shell's. Ramcyzk is a guy that will eventually move over to LT in the NFL, probably sooner than later. So Shell will most likely be relegated to the bench.

I think we are just staring to go on the long and possibly very painful task of finding a LT.  It takes many teams years and a lot of resources to find a long term solution.  (You can look at the gruesome path the Phins have gone over the past decade plus)

This is why last year few of us on here were a bit perturbed about the lack of respect that D'Brick was being given by a lot of the fan base.  He retired to force our hand but some of us warned that this team has been totally spoiled re LT for years.

Both D'Brick and Mangold pretty much allowed the Jets to plug JAGS into the line around for about 10 years.
