YJF
Since, It's become a habit here to kill Martin. I always jump to his defense. I'm rehashing an old post here from a previous thread to dispel another one of these perceptions. This one is The Martin can't break long runs theory. Here is the post. You can ignore it or discuss it. That's up to you guys but here are the facts and that particular post. I agree, Martin's one weakness is his inability to break the long run. Martin doesn't have breakaway speed. It's his one weakness. That's why they signed Blaylock. But here's some interesting stats from last year. These are all backs that had nearly the same amount of carries. These guys all had over 300 carries. RUNS OVER 20 YARDS Curtis Martin- 7 Ladainian Tomlinson-6 Edgerrin James- 6 Clinton Portis- 5 Corey Dillon-8 There are a ton of backs who had less than 300 carries. I didn't include them in this mix and they had 7 runs over 20 or less. Ahman Green had 6, Duece McAlister had 5 etc etc etc The two best in this category were Shaun Alexander who had 15 runs over 20 (Very impressive) and Tiki Barber who had 11. He's a boom or bust type back. He'll get stopped for a few losses and then break a nice gainer. I like Tiki. Anyway. Fred Taylor who may be the most explosive back next to Tomlinson had 9 last year but as usual he ended up injured. Just a sidenote and it's not fair to Lamont Jordan because he didn't have enough carries to even be compared on this list. Jordan's longest run last year was 33 yards. In the last two years, His longest run from scrimmage has been 39 yards. He only had 3 plays over 20 last year but he didn't have nowhere near the carries that Martin had and he's way more of a big play threat than Martin is. I'm just trying to show you that The "long runs" issue is not as big of a factor as one would think.
Savage69
How's Martin Stack up for TD's YJF?? Lets see TD's Last 3 years.. Martin 21 Alexander 46 Holmes 62 in 2 1/2 seasons Rudi Johnson 21 but has only played 21 Games Dillon 21 hasn't played full 16 games in 03 or 04 Jamal Lewis 27 only 1 16 game season in the last 3 Marshall Faulk 21 on around 200 carries a year! Ahman Green 29 only 1 complete season in last 3 Clinton Portis 34 has never played a 16 game season LaDainian Tomlinson 44 Tiki Barber

Alot of those had to do with short goaline td's not long runs but it's a fair stat comparison. All I know is Martin rushed for 1,697 yards last year 4.6 yards a run and he had 12 rushing td's. That was last season. Pretty good numbers. For Jordan to be even compared to Curtis. He's gotta rush for 1,000 plus yards for the next 7 to 10 years every single season. Don't miss any games regardless of injury, never fumble, be a leader in the lockerroom and make all your blitz pickups in pass protection. If Jordan does that for the next 7 to 10 years. He might reach Martin's level.
Savage69
pretty misleading savage since jordan ran the ball whenever we smelled the endzone, especially in 2003 Not really JW if Martin was such a Great Back why didn't he get the Goal line Carries?? Can't have it both ways..Excuses are something people make for Martin because he's a nice Guy!But that has nothing to do with Football! And in 03 Jordan had a total of 46 carries and only 1 in the month of Dec! In a 16 game season that comes out to around 3 carries a game! Oh yeah he hogged that ball from Cumar alright!!

YJF
New Thread: Curtis Martin Vs AquaMan - Let's see what Curtis can do in water. Can Aquaman, Curtis Martin and Barry Sanders rush for 1,000 yards in their first 10 seasons. noone else has. I heard that Aquaman's a bit of a fumbler and can't run in warm weather conditions. In all seriousness. I'm just so sick of Martin getting blasted. This is the most disrespected superstar in Jets history. It's embarrasing how Jets fans treat this guy. And in 10 years Jordan will be 37!!LOL One thing I can say about you is your Fair...NOT!! Hey like I said..Martin deserves the HOF because of his Durability and Longevity! For Talent..Not Durability..Who had better Talent Bo Jackson or Martin?? 8) Bo Jackson was arguably the most talented RB pound for pound in the history of The NFL. He's one of the greatest "talents" I have ever seen at RB. Unfortunately, He couldn't stay healthy. That's part of being a great back. If you are going to measure Martin talent wise, in terms of pure physical ability. He doesn't measure to a ALOT OF RB's. There are 3rd string RB's in The NFL who have more physical ability than Martin BUT.... There's a difference between physical ability and being a great runner. Martin is a great runner. He has tremendous vision and balance. He's tough, He has terrific stamina, gets better as the game goes along. He has great hands, never fumbles. Those are just some of his on field atributes. I compare Martin to a runningback like Emmitt Smith. Emmitt is not very strong, He's not very fast. He's not physically imposing but he was a great runner. He doesn't blow you away with his physical talents.

And I'll even say that Martin at 31 performed eon's better then Emmitt at that age..The last 3 yr's he played was for Ego and Stats!!But some Young Jet Fans(Not You) think Martin will be even better this year!! No one beats Father time and neither will Martin! Last year was a freak thing football wise! I've never seen it in my years of watching Ball! Of course we had a 6-10 schedule but I give Martin huge props for his Career year at 31! Thank God Holmes was hurt,Alexander didn't get 1 more carry and Cory only played 15 games!! Jets played The Chargers and The Texans. The AFC East had 4 of the top ranked defenses in football in New England, Buffalo and Miami. The Jets also played Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Martin was one of the few backs in The NFL to rush for 100 yards against Baltimore and San Diego last season. Two of the top 5 rushing defenses in The NFL last year. Holmes by the way is the same age as Martin.
YJF
To Savage's credit. Atleast he stands up and fights me on an issue. The rest of The Martin haters ignore the facts and run for the hills. YJF..First off..The 1000 yd rushing thing was a Big deal in the days of 12 and 14 game seasons! Also the backs then didn't get 350+ carries a season!Jim Brown missed it as a rookie by 58 yds on his 202 carries that year!Want to be fair??
