With the 2017 season just one week away from being in the rear-view mirror, it’s time to take a look at each position group in the draft and find the perfect prospect for the New York Jets. Each group will get a perfect fit, an honorable mention and a wild card.

First up is running back, where it’s no secret the Jets need help for next year, assuming they move on from Matt Forte. Rather than spending big in free agency (where they will have more than $80 million if they choose to use it), there are a plethora of options in this year’s class. We’re not talking about the Saquon Barkley- or Derrius Guice-level prospects of the world, but second- and third-day gems who could blossom into stars.

Sony Michel, UGA

The 5-foot-11, 222-pound senior has somehow flown under-the-radar in a year when he’s averaged more than seven yards per carry and punched in 13 touchdowns. Playing in a committee that includes Nick Chubb and D’Andre Swift will have that effect, but Michel might get the big spotlight when it matters most next year in the NFL.

With explosiveness, impressive vision and power to run through arm tackles, Michel is a do-it-all threat  prone to ripping off chunk yardage. The former five-star recruit fits what the scouting department has prioritized over their tenure: talent (duh!), good leadership and character (two-year team captain), on top of experience.

The Jets have gotten yet another productive year out of Bilal Powell in rotational usage while rookie Elijah McGuire has flashed in limited time. With the assumption they will move on from Matt Forte, a big chunk of the running workload will open up, leaving a key spot for a rookie contributor.

Landing a pro ready back that fits the offense perfectly but not cost a premium draft pick would be a slam dunk. Go get Sony Michel in Round 3, Mike Maccagnan.

Honorable mention: Ronald Jones, USC

It’s no secret the Jets wanted Alvin Kamara in last year’s draft, but the Saints beat them to him. While Jones isn’t a Kamara clone, there are certainly similar traits as runners in the open field who consistently make defenders look foolish.

With superb acceleration and speed to get to the outside, the Trojans feature back exploded in 2017 for nearly 1,500 yards on the ground. He’s averaged more than six yards per carry in all three seasons he’s played for USC, while also catching more than 30 passes.

Robby Anderson has given Gang Green a big-play element it’s lacked for a long time, but that shouldn’t slow the team down from finding that for the backfield. Outside of Saquon Barkley, it’s hard to find a bigger threat in this class for the home run than Jones. He’s expected to go in the top 64 selections next spring, when the Jets could use one of their two second-round picks on him.

Wild card: Martez Carter, Grambling

You might not recognize the name Martez Carter just yet, but don’t sleep on the star running back from Grambling. With 854 yards on the ground and another 449 receiving on 33 catches, he’s one of the better do-it-all threats in this year’s group.

The Jets have not had an NFL caliber return man in quite some time. Carter’s work in the backfield is where he’s made his mark, but he’s quietly brought back four kicks in his career for the Tigers as well.

If the team doesn’t want to invest a high-caliber asset such as a Day 2 pick on the running back position, they’ll have to go bargain shopping. Fortunately, capable starters are found in this group on Day 3 each year. Martez Carter is flying under-the-radar, but he might have a similar rise as Tarik Cohen out of North Carolina A&T did last year.

Expect him to make an NFL team happy quite quickly.

As much as Id like to spend a 2nd round pick on a RB, im hoping we fill another position and have one of these guys fall to the 3rd.

One guy to also keep an eye on is the RB from Iowa Akrum Wadley.  He is small at only 190 lbs but is an excellent punt returner and can really catch the ball out of the backfield.  Similar skill set to McGuire, which could be redundant for our offense, but seems like a guys whose skills will translate to NFL

I'd be happy with any of them. Also, Connor Rogers (the guy that wrote the article) is a very good guy to follow for Jets draft stuff.

He started his own podcast "stick to the jets". It's a fun listen.

I'd love to take a RB with either the 2nd 2 or our 3rd. We really need to grab an OL with the 2nd pick. If we haven't traded them all away.

Did a 7 round mock simulator on FanSpeak. Crazy results but it’s a lot of fun. Worked it until I got Mayfield or Darnold. In every one however, Giants took Barkley....hmmmm.
