Darnold, an early first round pick plus money is actually about as attractive as it’s ever gonna get.

The Johnsons will hire the executive search arm from Walmart. And then we can repeat the cycle. I don’t totally feel bad for Sam Darnold, but I have sympathy. Then again, when his contract is up, he will bolt, so whatever.

I posted this in another thread but wanted to give it its own discussion.  The following list is the 29 players under contract for next year.  That is the lowest number of players under contract for 2019 in the entire NFL.  The Raiders are second at 31.  Most teams have about 40-45.   So just keep in mind just how many players need to replaced with that $100 million.

So here is what Maccagnan has to show for his efforts so far.

Its a good base and all the dead money is gone. Looking at the list I like all the players.  Now do I want they all to be starters... No... but having:

Franchise QB: Check

3 Solid RBs: Check, Yes they need upgrades but McGuire, Crowell and Cannon are good enough for now... Add a player like Bell... Golden.

No WRs: Peake doesn't count.  EEEK

4 Starting OL: Yes Long and Shell need to be upgraded but these are solid players

2 TEs: Check

4 DL: Including Williams who is an above average player

3 LBs: Not good. This is gonna need some major help

3 Safeties: Good base... Need depth

4 CBs: Need a replacement for Mo.

1 Punter: Who cares..

Although its not a lot its a good base with NO DEAD MONEY... which is a great start. Draft 6 players... you have 35.

- Sign 2 high quality WRs (I.E. Allison and John Brown) I would say Gordon but I think he stays in NE

- Resign Enuwa and Anderson

- Sign Warmack if Eagles don't resign him

- Sign Henry Anderson, Copeland, Anthony Barr (Dante Fowler if not).

- Sign Ronald Darby... (if Not resign Mo)

- Sign Bell (If not get Ingram)

Draft DT, OL, 2 WRs, RB, and a LB

- Sign Low cost depth.

This wouldn't be a Super Bowl team, but I think that this would get the Jets to the playoffs and deeper depending on how the draft picks hit.

Yes and no. Yes, it sucks that the team lacks more foundational pieces. No, it’s not true that the money will be stretched super tight to build a full team. Most of the bottom 20 players are “cheap”

For our offense, the “Starters” are already in  place at:

QB - darnold

RB2- crowell

TE1- herndon

LT- beachum

 RT-shell

 G- winters

WR4 - burnett

this means you need 3 wr, a rb, a center and a guard.

robbie and Enunwa together cost 22M or so. That’s your second and third receivers.

you trade down in the first for a first and a second (from say 10th to 20th) You use the first on a Wr.

A rb should come with 3rd round pick.

Center should be other 3rd round pick

the guard should be a 10m FA.

32m + and our first, plus 2 3rd rounders on offense

===

The starters we already have on defense are:

CB1-johnson

ILB- lee

ILB- williamson

 SS - adams

FS- maye

LOLB- jenkins

 DT- shepherd

 CB3- nickerson

(Yes, I’m cutting Leo.)

This means you need a CB2, OLB, DE, DE.

you resign mo Claiborne again for 10m

you sign a pass rush olb for 15m

you resign Henry Anderson for 8m

you sign a de free agent for 10m

you draft a OLB prospect in 2nd rd

you have spent 43m and the second round pick.

===

That means we have spent 75M and now have our 4-7 round picks and 50M in FA left over for the backups and bottom of roster guys. You get your Copeland’s and Luvu’s and Sterlings and roberts’s For “pennies”.

the team is not dying guys

You've done some good work here, and I agree with a lot of it. But this is a bit shortsighted, no? If you really don't want him on the club, at least trade him around draft time for a pick....my guess would be a 2-3. Can't just give away assets.
