Leon Washington RB Fl ST.

SoFlaJets

Recommended Posts

Strengths: Is a well-built back with a great center of gravity. Runs low to the ground and with very good pad-level. He has a strong lower body and will keep his legs driving. A slashing back that hits the hole hard and shows good burst through it. He has above average speed and shows a second-gear to run away from defenders. He runs a lot harder than his 5-9 frame might indicate. He's quick and agile. Shows very good COD skills and will consistently hit the cutback lane without losing much in transition. He explosives through the hole and runs with great toughness. He protects his body well and makes it very difficult for defenders to get a clean shot. He is a smooth route runner with a good feel for the passing game. His hands are reliable and he shows the ability to adjust to the poorly thrown ball. He can pluck on the run and is a threat after the catch. He also is an aware and technically sound blocker. Shows good leverage, initial pop and toughness in pass pro. Team leader and terrific competitor.

Weaknesses: Durability is a major concern. He has never carried a full load. Has had trouble staying healthy and shoulder injuries seem to be long term concern. He's undersized. Runs hard and is tough, but he's not a powerful runner. Won't push the pile or break a lot of head-on tackles in the NFL. Lacks ideal height and can be overmatched at times as a pass blocker. Has trouble sustaining some blocks and will whiff occasionally when he tries to cut the LB's legs out. He has above average speed but he's not an elite home-run threat. He's also not overly elusive and he won't make many defenders miss in space. Also, while he is powerful for his size, he lacks the ideal size of a fulltime load-carrying north-south runner.

Overall: Washington took over as a starter in the final two games of his freshman season in 2002. He missed four games as a sophomore in 2003 with a dislocated shoulder and took a backseat to Greg Jones (Jaguars) before regaining the starting job as a junior this season. Washington still splits time with Lorenzo Booker, but Washington is the starter and typically gets the most reps throughout the course of a game. As a junior in 2004, Washington missed two games (Duke and Maryland) because of a shoulder injury but he started the other 10 games and led the ACC in rushing yards per game with 95.1. He averaged 6.9 yards per carry and finished the season as the Gator Bowl MVP. As a senior in 2005, Washington rushed for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns on 97 carries, while also catching 25 passes for 267 yards and one touchdown. Washington lacks ideal size and he has a history of durability issues. He has never been able to carry a full load at FSU and there are obvious concerns about his potential to do so in the NFL. Washington showed up out of shape as a senior in 2005 and he wound up losing a significant amount of playing time as a result. However, his quickness, power, toughness and versatility give him an excellent chance of developing into a consistent contributor in the NFL. Even if Washington is never able to emerge as a premier back at the next level, his ability to contribute as a runner, receiver, blocker and kickoff return specialist make him worth the late-Day 1 draft pick.

his constant rotating in and out of games. He is a very well built back with the power and strength to be an effective runner once he gets past the line of scrimmage. He can keep his feet vs. hard hits and has shown the ability to lower a shoulder to deliver a hard blow to tackler to gain the extra yard at the end of the run. He has the very quick feet, acceleration, vision, instincts and playing speed to make big plays and plays a lot of Ryan Moats who was drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Eagles. On film, Washington is a tough football player and has the physique to hold up physically in the NFL, but he is going to have to prove that. Overall, Washington is going to be a very good NFL starting running back if used in a system similar to what the Eagles use. But if used in a more traditional NFL offense, he is best suited as a backup running back, starting third down back and punt returner. But be careful not to over-draft him because of his lack of size and experience carrying the offensive load on his back.

I like this pick a lot. Too many people assume that if we don't have a 300-350 carry HB on the team that our RB's need to be upgraded. There's nothing wrong with RBBC. It's not like QBBC or anything.

RBBC can pay off big dividends. Just ask Pittsburgh, New England, Tampa Bay, & Green Bay fans.

Kiper Said He Wouldve Beena 2nd Rounder If Not For The Crap Oline At Fsu, His Yard Per Reception Went Up This Year Even Though His Ypc Dropped From 7 To 4. Needs A Hole But When Provided With One Can Make Things Happen

I saw something on DraftDaddy saying something very similar. Went back to school after being a projected 3rd rounder last year to help his stock but a beat up o-line, splitting carries, and play calling really hurt his production...all great points by the writer:cheers:

Dude,

You really are a liitle misinformed

Why would the Jets get rid of Houston

He was nothing short of a pleasant suprise last season

Absolutely....did very well as a downhill runner behind a terrible o-line. If he runs that hard behind some blocking who knows what he can do?

I am a husker fan, but i always had a little sweet spot for the seminoles and bowden as well. I will tell you this.

Leon washington would have been an amazing back if he hadnt played under the seminoles current offensive coordinator who is bowdens son. I watched alot of games the last couple of years and the florida state offense was about as stagnent and impotent as the jets the last couple of years.

Line prblems, qb issues and outright incompetence by the OC led to leon washington (combined with his injuries) being under the radar. This man in the right system could be a very prominent back, maybe not LT or Tiki Barber, but you never know.

I like Leon Washington. I am not sure about him as a feature back down the road.

He was impressive at the combine. He's got a compact build and is very fast. He has good hands and strong versatilty. Can return kicks.

I like the player but I am not sure about his potential to be a centerpiece player at RB.

He has complete tools however. He has some good power for his size and strong legs, good vision and anticipation. He runs real low. He's a tough back.

Jets addressed two skill position guys with players with upside. Just two picks remaining for The Jets. It will be interesting to see where they go.

we still need a REAL wr

In 2006, The Jets top 4 WR's will be Coles, McCareins, Cotchery and Dwight.

Brad Smith will be The Jets 5th WR for now. He doesn't have to be ready right out the gate but I think he has a chance to be a starter in this league.

Bye Bye Cedric.

Doubtful.

This type of running back (based on the review above) is much more likely to replace Blaylock than Houston.

Houston is a bruiser, a tough yards guy. Blaylock is the finesse speed guy.

It will be interesting to see who, among the 5 RB's now on the roster (Martin, Blaylock, Houston, the FB whose name now eludes me, and this Washington guy) will be the ones to make the team, and get the carries, in 2006.

anybody else think this guy sounds like Emmitt Smith?I know I know don't go there....I'm talking about his scouting report oh yea didn't #22 also come from that program?

Emmitt came from Florida.

Similar scouting report. Also Washington had no passing game at Florida St to protect him.

yup,, what was emmits height? 5'8 in socks,, this is a emmitt clone,, quick but tuf as nails

He is an Emmitt clone. Me thinks Mangini is trying to build an offense in the mold of the early 90's cowbows.

Jets bounced back nicely today after a couple of ho-hum picks in RD 3 ... Washington was Good value at 117 ... speedy playmaker as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield ... kinda small, but bigger than Maurice Drew and a very talented player ... I liked the idea behind the Brad Smith pick, and I like the vlaue of Washington at 117 ... could be a heist behind a Good OL, and that's what we tried to put in place in RD 1
