faba
Seek to Restructure Contracts for Salary Cap Space Tuesday, January 30, 2007; Page E02 The Redskins have begun contacting agents for several key players, attempting to create additional space under the 2007 salary cap, and reworked wide receiver James Thrash's deal last week, according to sources with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity because some of the negotiations are in the early stages. Thrash, 32, who has been a special teams player and a solid receiver in limited duty, was set to make $1.3 million in base salary in 2007, but some of that money was converted into a bonus, trimming about $380,000 of Washington's cap. He also received a two-year extension as part of the deal, the sources said. Several more players will have to agree to lower their cap figures in order to make space to sign free agents as the Redskins seek to improve a 5-11 team. They have approached several key veterans already, sources said, and likely will speak with agents for quarterback Mark Brunell, cornerback Shawn Springs, tackle Jon Jansen, and defensive linemen Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels, among others. Teams must be under the cap, estimated at $109 million, in early March, which is when clubs are eligible to begin signing free agents from other teams. -- Jason La Canfora

Maxman
Clinton Portis can be had especially as desperate as they are going to be I don't see Portis being a Mangini kind of player. Falling asleep in meetings would not be a big hit here.

BP
I don't want Portis..we already have one player (Coles) whining about Mangini..we don't need another fanning the flames to the younger players.

mangenious420
Not a Mangini guy at all, but a very good player. Would rather have Jones or Turner though.
gang_green03
I would take Portis in a second but the Redskins won't trade him. They don't really seem to care about the cap to much but it would be enormous even for them. He is a top 5 RB though and I wouldn't really call him injury prone after one bad season. ECURB
Portis is only 10lbs heavier than Leon Washington and is YPC has dropped HUGE since leaving Denver... when he had "good" years it was becuase he got the ball over 20 times a game... he had just as many yards in denver and got the ball 15-18 times a game... We need to get a bruising power runner, not a 212lb RB coming off a shoulder injury...

Portis is only 10lbs heavier than Washington yet Washington is being wholeheartedly dismissed as a primary RB because of his size? That ain't right yo! That ain't right yo! Leon is 10lbs lighter and a couple inches shorter (shorter is a good thing) If Leon puts on 5-10lbs this offseason he will be the same size as Portis... Leon is very capable of being our starter IMO but only if he puts on a few pounds and keeps improving... We will know if Mangini agrees once we see if we pick up a FA RB or draft one,... if we dont obviously he thinks Leon can do it...

I'm all for Leon as the starter, but as it stands, Mangini will probably go with a two headed running back until he gets a true stud RB. I don't see that happening any time soon, so until then... AG
Forget Thomas Jones he is not a premier RB, my plan of getting Portis is coming along fine, we lose a top RB in Martin and gain a new top 5 RB in Portis
