Boy do we need Wang back. As it stands, Darrell Rasner is now our #3 with Kei Igawa as the #2.

At least with Wang, Igawa as the 3 isn't that bad, but Rasner as the 3 is. I wonder who gets called up, could it be Hughes? That would be pretty interesting.

Do not worry. Madmike says the Yanks have excellent starting pitching depth.

The Yanks have several options to go to that will probably get them a quality start and this is aside from Wang throwing five hitless the other day. The Yankee rotation will be fine IMO. As I said in a thread a few days ago, I'm actually quite happy about the chances some of the kids are going to get with all the injuries the staff will be facing this season. As I've said before, the Yanks can win regular season games with average pitching so as long as they get that...they'll be fine. Come post season, they'd better have three healthy arms or their chances will be greatly diminished.

Some folks will be up in arms over this. Others will sit back and laugh at the Yankees misfortune. Me? Not worried at all. Way too early to panic. Talk to me a few weeks after the all star break.

Agree but average pitching combined with well below average fielding and base running won't cut the mustard.

What makes you think the yankees are a below avg base running team? They were one of the best baserunning teams in baseball last year. And just because you make errors, that doesn't indicate that you're a bad defensive team. Errors are a really bad judge of defense. The yankees are an average defensive team. These errors won't keep up at this rate.

If these injuries were going to happen it's better that they happen now than later in the season. They have a lot of guys in the minors who can step in.

What tool would you suggest to measure team defense? A self-report on how each player on the team feels he's doing defensively? A poll by Yankee fans judging how well the team plays the field?

There are many defensive stats that you can look at. Errors however are the worst way to judge. Basically any way of measuring defense is better than errors.

And where do the Yankees stack up in these "objective" categories so far this season?

You can't judge defense based on 11 games. That makes zero sense at all. The yankees will probably end up just like they did last year, around the middle of the pack. You judge these players on their career body of work, not 2 weeks...

Fair enough. But you still didn't answer the question.

And you're ok with this? "Average" is good enough for a team with, supposedly, the best "left side of the infield" in baseball history?

No one ever said it was one of the best defensive left sides in baseball history. Their bats are the reason they will be in the hall of fame. Jeter has always been a below avg SS and Arod has been up and down at 3rd. You can win with middle of the road D.

Maybe in the regular season, but the teams that end up World Champions typically play stellar defense; the rationale being that games in the playoffs are close, and a crucial error can sometimes be the difference between a win and a loss.

Remember Rivera's error that cost the Yankees the title in 2001? THOSE kind of errors, fluky as they may seem, are likely to bring an end to seasons. The '06 Cardinals, '05 White Sox, '02 Angels, '98 Yankees, etc all played elite-level defense.

Rivera is one of the best fielding pitchers in the majors. Pointing to that ONE error makes no sense. Errors are fluky things that happen sometimes. Aside from the 02 angels, most of those teams you mentioned were actually not stellar defensive teams during the season.

Mike is right when he says that errors are not the stat to use when judging a team.

However, anyone with open eyes will see that Jeter is struggling with his glove this season, and his throws are not to sharp either. And Phelps is a disaster at 1B. If he can't hit in a part time role, he has no use here. At least Phillips was a decent-to-above-average fielder.

Jeter is not a good SS. That shouldn't surprise anyone.

The 1B situation is a major problem. Cashman really dropped the ball by not bringing in a decent 1B over the off season.

Zone Rating, Range Factor, UZR, FRAR, FRAA are all MUCH better then the subjectivity of the error stat.

Mike , did Jeter and Abreu's defense cost the Yanks the Igawa game?

Did Jeter's error allow a run to score that would not have yesterday in what was ultimately a one run loss? The Yanks are playing sloppy baseball despite all your scientific findings.

But, but, the stats? The stats?

Stats are not facts, folks.

Did Mintgarbagewicz's DP and pop up in 2 AB's with the bases loaded and less then 2 out hurt them too? There are a lot of reasons why you lose games.
