Most overrated bands

Nobody ever said they were godd, did they?

My comments were addressing the fact that they have sold millions of albums and are still playing to packed houses. Everybody likes what they like, just as everybody loves to hate certain bands. That's what makes discussing music--and musical tastes--so much fun.

i know what you mean. a couple of months ago I was looking up number 1 hits through the years and never realized Poison had like 5 or 6 #1's! WOW!

They actually put on a pretty good show live. You know as well as I do that you can't watch a concert on TV.

Another band who was mentioned in this thread is Bon Jovi. They're like a juggernaut. Just played two sold out arena shows here in Tampa. Despite the fact that his guitarist is a better singer.

100% on TV never getting the sound or camera angles right for rock shows. How many times during a song does the director take a shot of the drummer or audience during a great guitar solo? This makes me crazy; I want to see how it's being played on the fretboard. Why hire a director who has no understanding of how rock bands work. That's why any concert/band film by Martin Scorsese is great: He loves the music and knows how it's executed on stage. Also, why so many quick cuts. Stay on a musician for more than five seconds. No, the director must show you a shot of a chick in the audience giving the rock horns or playing to the camera. F**k you, moron, stay on the shot.

I never begrudge anybody making money in the entertainment business. To have even one hit in music is about as likely as me having a threesome with Olivia Munn and Vida Guerra ( With fists to the heavens: "Why, God, why??!!"). If you really broke it down, Poison succeeded in writing many hits that people enjoy. I'm just not one of them. That's not a dig, just reality. People probably want to skewer me for having T-Rex in my avatar. These debates are what make music--in all its genres--awesome.

Poison has sold tons of records and is still selling out arenas today.

Arenas? I doubt it. State Fairs? Most definately. We're going to see them in a couple months at the Kansas State Fair. YEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

They don't have any arenas in East Bum****. The State Fair is the biggest venue in the sticks.

Every time they're here in Tampa, they sell out the Forum.

Yeah, except for Kemper Arena, The Sprint Center and Kansas Colliseum. But we'll discount those to make your generalization of Kansas funnier. :) The only reason they sell out in Florida is because that's where everyone goes to die.

Reminds me of the casino circuit.

You guys must have those too.

A sampling of acts that are playing/have played there.

Donna Summer

David Cassady

Engelbert

Freddie Fender

Regis Philbin - this one killed me when I saw the ad. Does this guy sing or something? Imagine the type of audience that would be at this uh.....gig.

Nikki Sixx is the ****iest mother ****er alive. The way he talks about his accomplishments you would think he is john lennon or something. He was mediocre. Look wise, hair bands were pretty damn lame. You dont look back and say wow that was cool style like you could of other decades past. Talent-wise imo you give them too much credit because they were nothing special.

Last but not least, even though Poison kinda sucks for some odd reason so many hot girls are into them its kinda funny. I would open for poison for that reason and that reason only.

Hair metal wasn't the only thing musically going on in the 80's. There was a lot of good **** being made back then that didn't get much radio play. But even if you suppose that hair metal was the only thing around back then, it was better than nirvana and the crap like korn and limp bisquick that nirvana spawned. Slayer, Testement, Metallica, Megadeath all 80's bands of a similar genre that were popular that surpassed norvana musically. That is to say nothing about the venom's, death's, morbid angel's of the time. Or any of the very talented punk bands out at the time.

thats why i hate discussing musical tastes.. its almost like political talk with the harsh views.

Me personally Im all over the place with musical tastes. I understand what Boozer is saying about Nirvana, but I still like it. Heck, I like almost all the bands that people listed as most overrated. Does my musical taste suck? Am I too into "popular" music? Maybe. But I dont really care... I enjoy what I enjoy, i listen to what I listen to.

But I must say my musical tastes have really expanded with my emusic account. I was going through my ipod today up at the NASCAR race in NH and half my stuff on there was small or unknown bands... I couldnt find anything that people really knew! Now I just need to load up all my cd's onto itunes and I'll be all set...

You're right, but 80s rock n roll sucked so bad it hurt. I'm just happy it's over :P

ps i agree, limp bizkit and kid rock and all those guys suck. how they are still probably running around the playboy mansion i will never understand. i don't really blame that on nirvana though

Could not agree more.

There is nothing more pointless than criticising someones taste in music. You either like something or you don't. It's pretty simple. There is no good or bad and there is no right or wrong. Everyone is unique and people will take to different things.

For example. I love U2's music. Nothing to do with 'hype' or how it was shoved down my throat. I simply like their sound. Same applies to all kinds of music that I may like. If someone disagrees with me that's fair enough, that's their right. Chances are, I won't like some of the stuff they listen to. No point in arguing over it though, it's not going to change my views and I wouldn't expect to change anyone elses. We are all of our own opinions, there is no such thing as 'bad' taste in music.

I think we can all agree that Britney Speares fans have bad taste in music.

I swear to god I read in "Songwriting Secrets of the Beatles" that certain music is more pleasing to the brain. They did actual studies. So in a way, certain music is better. Not saying its the music I listen to or you listen to but certain music.

Those Rap/Rock bands or whatever you want to call them. I admit I had a liking to some of it. Rage Against The Machine, 1st Limp ****sticks Cd, early Korn, but it got ****ty quickly. Though, I would almost always say I rather listen to the rap/rock stuff then listen to that emo crap around today, with bands like Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance.

Nirvana no way had anything to do with Rap/Rock, they don't even sound like that, as soon as Cobain died, thats about the time Nu-Metal became mainstream. Pretty much rock music is exactly like hip hop music. It isn't as good as it used to be, the music for both genres are just plain crap.

Emo isnt my style either. I am into more of a raw sound. We all go through stages where we listened to certain music and shift. I listen to music for the rush so whatever I find that gives me that rush I check out.

That's true in a sense that certain music will appeal to more people, so in a way I would agree.

My point was basically that I'd never criticise anyone over tastes in music, it's their right to listen to whatever the hell they want. I can't hold anything against anyone for liking whatever they listen to.

I'm really into all kinds of music, minus Emo, Country, and todays Rap. The fact that people consider Emo a form of rock is laughable. Country is just boring, unless we're talking Lynyrd Skynyrd here, of course in my opinion thats Southern Rock, and it's safe to say the rap genre isn't what it once was back in the late 80's and early 90's. I honestly could listen to anything but those 3 genres.

**** that politically correct ***** ****. I don't go for that whole spare people's feelings and everyone is a unique snowflake ****. Break **** down musically there is stuff that a kindergartner ADHD kid could write on his macbookpro after nap time and there is stuff that actually has some musical talent. I think we all know what category Britney fits in.

i dont give a sh!t if someone has "talent" or not. I want a song I like to hear, a song that says something to me, that has a personality. You could have all the greatest musicians play together but if its soulless it means nothing. I couldnt tell you who a good drummer, guitarist, or tambourine player is. As long as it sounds good to me I enjoy it.

Hair metal was the only thing that was maybe being played on the radio back then. But a lot of great music was coming out in the 80's. Stuff like punk rock, metal, and all other kinds of rock and roll around back the that didn't suck. Also; Hair metal was better than emo. Nirvana and their whiny watered down piece of **** music killed all of that. If you don't see that, you're blind. None of that **** is coming out anymore. What happened to punk rock? where is it? What about metal? lol. Even the underground metal coming out nowadays is crap. In the 80's at least there was half decent **** like pantera and slayer, metallica, megadeath, motorhead around back then. What are the rock and roll equivivant bands around now for people who don't like a bunch of dudes crying about girls they lost and crap. Kyuss? doom metal? lmao... stoner rock isn't doom metal.

I know stoner rock isn't doom metal, but they do share some similarities and there is such a thing as stoner doom.

I don't listen to much metal though, at least not the kind you seem to be in to. I like a lot of blues or hard rock stuff. The Black Keys are excellent, The Mars Volta is crazy but damn good, Queens of the Stone Age ****in rock, Dead Meadow is great psychedelic rock. Pelican is great instrumental album, although I didn't like their latest album too much.

I listen to very little stuff that is on the radio, and it's sad how many people listen to completely garbage music like Fallout Boy, Maroon 5, etc. and think it's good.

To be more accurate, popular 80's music sucked like it does in most era's. But in defense of the 80's, they also gave us bands like Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dinosaur Jr, The Pixies, Eric B. and Rakim, Public Enemy. Not to mention Tom Waits had some of his best albums in the 80's, along with the Clash.
