Brian Smolinski and Brad Janney come to mind. Nowadays the NHL treats college hockey players as minor league talent. I don't get it.

Never mind.

Kessler, Quirk, Saunders Virtue, Watson, Wellman each recognized with major team awards.

AMHERST, Mass. - Rising senior Justin Braun and rising junior James Marcou were named Co-Most Valuable Players on Saturday afternoon as the UMass men's hockey team held its annual awards banquet. Along with the MVP award, the UMass coaching staff handed out four other major awards, recognized the 2008-09 senior class and gave out awards for team superlatives.

Marcou led UMass in scoring for the second straight season collecting 15 goals and 32 assists in his sophomore campaign. The sophomore winger shared the Hockey East scoring title with Boston University's Colin Wilson (the first UMass player to lead the league in scoring) and was named a Hockey East First-Team All-Star. He became the first sophomore since All-American Jon Quick to be named to the New England Hockey Writers All-Star Team, was a semifinalist for the Walter Brown Award and was a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award.

In 2007-08, he was named the team's Rookie of the Year. The native of Kings Park, N.Y., was also named an assistant captain for the 2009-10 season. Marcou will be one of the most prolific scorers returning to collegiate hockey next season as he ranked 11th nationally in points per game this past season.

Braun was a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star pick in 2008-09 leading UMass defensemen in scoring with seven goals and 16 assists. A two-time Hobey Baker nominee, the native of Vadnais Heights, Minn., averaged nearly 30 minutes of ice time as a member of the power play and penalty kill units where he added two power play and two shorthanded goals. Braun will co-captain the Minutemen in 2009-10 alongside Brett Watson.

Senior Jordan Virtue and redshirt sophomore Kevin Kessler were given the team's Minuteman Award which is given to the player(s) recognized by the team as having exemplified the standards upon which the UMass program is built: dedication, determination, character and sportsmanship.

Virtue, a native of Walpole, Mass., played in 19 games this past season finishing with three points on three assists. Kessler, a native of Marshfield, Mass., was the 2007-08 winner of the Most Improved Player Award. He played in four games finishing the season with a +1 rating.

Sophomore Shawn Saunders was named the team's Most Improved Player which is voted on by the team as having improved the most over the course of the season. Saunders played in 16 games with one goal and two assists. He notched his single goal against UMass Lowell (2/27). The native of Whitehouse Station, N.J., played in 12 straight games to finish the season after seeing action in just four of the first 27 games.

For the third consecutive year, rising senior and 2008-09 co-captain Brett Watson was honored with the Jack Canniff Unsung Hero Award which is given to the UMass player recognized by his teammates to have contributed the most of the team without receiving the recognition that others have. Watson was also named co-captain of the 2009-10 season.

The native of Media, Pa., played in 36 games tallying five assists on the season. Watson was one of the Minutemen's top players on the penalty killing unit and has been recognized among Hockey East coaches, players, and writers as one of the top defensive forwards in the league.

Senior Cory Quirk, who signed with the AHL's Albany River Rats following the season, was given the Coaches Award for having exemplified dedication in the classroom as well as on-and-off the ice. The 2008-09 co-captain was a two-time Hobey Baker nominee, set the UMass games-played record (150) and became just the eighth player in program history to eclipse the 100-point barrier. The Brockton, Mass., native played in all 39 games of the season posting 11 goals and a career-high 19 assists. He finished his UMass career with 103 career points on 43 goals, 60 assists, and a +21 rating.

The Rookie of the Year Award was given to Casey Wellman after he finished the year ranked second on the team in scoring. The native of Brentwood, Calif., was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team after leading the league in Rookie Scoring. Wellman ranked 10th overall nationally in Rookie Scoring after playing in all 39 games of the season scoring 33 points (11g, 22a). He was the Hockey East January Rookie of the Month and a three-time Hockey East Rookie of the Week selection.

Vermont vs. Boston University

Verizon Center | Washington, D.C.

Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2HD, ESPN360)

How they got here

VERMONT -- East Regional 3-seed

Vermont 4, Yale 1

Vermont 3, Air Force 2 (2OT)

BOSTON UNIVERSITY -- Northeast Regional 1-seed

Boston University 8, Ohio State 3

Boston University 2, New Hampshire 1

Forwards

Boston University's forward lines run deep and its top three lines are dangerous. Even the fourth group can pot a timely goal and maintain momentum when the Terriers get rolling. The first unit features Hobey Baker finalist Colin Wilson and the team's leading goal scorer, Jason Lawrence, who has 24 on the year and scored three goals in two games at the regional -- including the game winner against New Hampshire in the final minute of the third period. The third line of Chris Connolly, Vinny Saponari and Corey Trivino is an all-freshman trio that now has a full season of experience under its belt. John McCarthy, Nick Bonino and Brandon Yip are on the second line and have combined to score 43 goals.

Discussion of Vermont's forward group starts with junior Viktor Stalberg, a top-10 Hobey Baker finalist and All-Hockey East first-team selection. Stalberg is a Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick and led the Catamounts in goals (24), assists (21) and points (45). He gets support on a line with Brian Roloff and Justin Milo. Roloff has scored 10 goals and Milo has 11. Among Milo's tallies are four power-play goals and four game-winning goals. The line of Colin Vock, Dean Strong and Wahs Stacey is good at both ends of the rink. All three are creative with the puck. Center Matt Marshall is the only freshman forward and has played in 30 of 38 games.

Defensemen

Boston University's defense corps may be the best in the nation. It starts with senior All-American Matt Gilroy, the blue-line leader with 36 points. Juniors Eric Gryba (Ottawa) and Brian Strait (Pittsburgh) are both NHL draft picks and bring a more defense-first style. Sophomores Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk both have played 41 of 43 games, and freshman David Warsofsky, a St. Louis draft pick, has been in the lineup all 43 games for the Terriers. They're big and mobile.

Vermont's defense corps lacks the star power that the Terriers' possess, but the Catamounts just need to play a simple game and take care of their own end. The group is comprised of four sophomores, a junior and a freshman. Sophomore Dan Lawson is the offensive leader. He has eight goals and scored the game winner in the second overtime period against Air Force in the regional final.

Goaltenders

Two freshmen goaltenders will match up in this game, but Boston College's John Muse proved last year that a rookie can play well and win twice at the Frozen Four. BU's Kieran Millan has been one of the best rookies in the nation and carries a 27-2-3 record in 33 starts, a 1.85 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage into this weekend's action. Vermont's Rob Madore has solid numbers, just not quite as astronomical as Millan's. Madore is 15-9-4 with a 2.25 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. After losing three straight starts to end the regular season and open the Hockey East playoffs, Madore responded by allowing just three goals over the equivalent of 2

After beating New Hampshire in the dramatic Northeast Regional Final last week, each of the Boston University Terriers piled onto the team bus and crowded around a cell phone they used to dial sophomore forward Joe Pereira, who was back home in Connecticut.

A UMass fan on USCHO posted that we'll be playing a home and home with Niagara on the weekend of Nov 6th-8th with the Friday game here and the Sunday game out in Buffalo. That's the first I've heard of it and I can't confirm it anywhere else. For now it's going in the possible column. However if that's true, those two games bring us to our 34 game schedule and an underwhelming one at that. No CCHA, No WCHA. A bunch of EZAC and Atlantic Hockey. Ugh.

Bentivoglio Called Up To The NHL

4/2/2009

Benti-nyi-head.jpg

Sean Bentivoglio

UNIONDALE., N.Y. - Former Niagara University men's hockey standout Sean Bentivoglio ('07) will become the second Purple Eagle to play in a regular-season National Hockey League game, when he laces up the skates against the Montreal Canadiens Thursday night.

The New York Islander is the first Purple Eagle since Matt Ryan played 12 games for the Los Angeles Kings during the 2005-06 season to have played a regular-season NHL game. The 5-foot-11 forward is one of just four Niagara products who have skated in an NHL exhibition game, including Ryan, Kyle Rogers and current Niagara assistant coach Greg Gardner.

Ironically enough, the two-time First Team CHA selection will make his NHL regular-season debut against the same team he played against in his first NHL exhibition game back on Sept. 21, 2007.

"We in the Niagara University community are very proud of what Sean has accomplished," head men's hockey coach Dave Burkholder said. "With the career he enjoyed at Niagara, its not a suprise that he is where he's at."

Bentivoglio left a huge impression on Monteagle Ridge, notching 132 points (43-89), good for sixth on Niagara's career points list and second on the career assists list. The 2006-07 CHA Player of the Year was a huge piece of Niagara's recent success, including notching a goal against Boston College in the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

After his senior year, Bentivoglio signed his deal on May 21, 2007 and has competed for the Providence Bruins and Bridgeport Soundtigers of the AHL. The Ontario native has notched 24 goals, 52 assists and 76 points in 157 games.

Wow!

BU jumps out to 2-0 lead then VT storms back in the 2nd period to take a 3-2 lead...

And the Bruins/Canadiens game has been a fun game to watch...

The Bruins/Habs game was insane. Have you ever seen a bigger bunch of pussies than the Canadiens tonight?

Can't believe UVM came back from the 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead. Its 3-3 as I type this with 14 minutes left in the 3rd. Lets go Catamounts!

I curse all of you guys for getting me hooked on this stuff! I actually watched the game last nite. Ugh! I had hope after seeing the BU freshmen goalie phenom pretty much having a meltdown under the pressure - but the rest of the team would not let it happen. Gallant effort by Vermont.

Go Miami-Ohio!

At least it was a good, exciting game to watch even if the bad guys won.
