Now Asbury Park in New Jersey may follow suit. Asbury Park, the Jersey Shore town made famous by Bruce Springsteen, may soon get another claim to fame - its very own topless beach. "Baring your chest is really no big deal these days," said Reggie Flimlin, who asked the Asbury Park City Council to allow women to doff their bikini tops on a stretch of city beach. "Why are women's rights still at the bottom of the totem pole in regards to female toplessness?" asked Flimlin, 48, who runs a yoga studio in the freewheeling town. She said she and other women occasionally go topless on a secluded part of the beach, and aren't worried about what men think. "Men have better things to do than sit around and gawk at women all day long," Flimlin said. Asbury Park officials are considering the idea - and a city council vote is set for July 7, Deputy Mayor John Loffredo said. "Women in other parts of the world go to the beach topless," he said. "We think New Jersey women are just as beautiful as any women anywhere in the world." It's a battle women already fought and won in New York - where every beach in the state is legally a topless beach. A 1992 ruling from the state's highest court threw out a law that made it illegal for women to take their shirts off in public. Judge Vito Titone called it "a law that discriminates against women by prohibiting them from removing their tops and exposing their bare chests in public as men are routinely permitted to do." This doesn't include National Park Service beaches at Sandy Hook in New Jersey and Fire Island on Long Island, where there is no federal law against nude sunbathing - and park rangers keep areas marked clothing-optional. Within the city, the NYPD recognizes that women can walk down the street topless, spokesman Paul Browne said. Still, some women have been busted for it. A woman wearing only bodypaint and a thong won a $10,000 settlement from the city after she was arrested at the 2001 Mermaid Day Parade in Coney Island. Four years later, east Village artist Phoenix Feeley was cuffed for walking topless down Delancey Street and later was paid $29,000 to drop her suit. "I'll go topless - or top-free, as we like to say - anywhere that a man can go top-free," Feeley said. "It's so sad how women are just so stigmatized, and they don't see the importance of this equality." She's fighting a similar case in New Jersey, after a 2008 arrest for sunbathing topless in Spring Lake. In the meantime, she wants all New York women to know their rights when they go to the beach this summer. "When I feel like taking off my shirt, I take off my shirt, and my bra or my bathing suit top," Feeley said. "Every time you take off your shirt is pretty memorable." Its unfortunately a unbelievable wave and you have to take this long path down a cliff and when you finally get to the bottom at the nude beach, its all dick...very little boob and the ones that are out to see, you dont want to see. The beach is at the bottom of a this huge cliff and there is all sorts of **** to do. I sat there and watch hang gliders take off for like 30 minutes...that **** is nuts. Anyway, there is like a invisible line that divides the nude beach and the none nude beach. And dudes strut there stuff right to the border of that cone in the sand and give the none nude beach a shot of his junk like every 5 minutes. They bend over for you and everything.
