Winners and losers from Jets' loss

DETROIT – The Jets dropped their preseason opener 26-17 to the Lions, answering very few of the questions that surround this team.

Here’s a look at the Jets winners and losers from last night’s game:

WINNERS

SANJAY LAL – The Jets wide receivers coach has a difficult job. He has a lot of inexperienced players he must bring along, and they played pretty well last night. Jeremy Kerley found holes in the Lions defense. Stephen Hill caught a couple passes and players like Ryan Spadola and Ben Obomanu showed they deserve consideration for the roster.

Lal works extremely hard in practice. It looks like his efforts are paying off.

JAIQUAWN JARRETT – The backup safety is moving to the starting lineup this week after impressing coach Rex Ryan. Jarrett was all over the field and made an impression. Now, he gets a shot to prove he deserves the starting safety spot over Antonio Allen.

KELLEN WINSLOW – It was just one catch, but Winslow’s 24-yard grab that began the Jets’ first touchdown drive showed what he could give the Jets if he’s healthy. It was a short throw from Mark Sanchez that Winslow turned into a long gain and changed the momentum and field position. Winslow could prove to be an important late addition to this team.

LOSERS

MARK SANCHEZ – You can’t throw that interception. It’s that simple. Sanchez played well on his third and final drive but it was not enough to shake the feeling he gave Jets fans after that interception. It was Deja Boo all over again. Jets fans have seen Sanchez turn the ball over 52 times in the last two years. He did not give anyone confidence that will stop if he’s the starter.

REX RYAN – Ryan can’t say he was not watching the offense when asked for an evaluation of Geno Smith’s play. He’s the head coach, not the defensive coordinator. It makes sense for Ryan to be heavily involved with the defensive calls, but he has to be able to pay attention to the offense, too. And if he is ignoring the offense? Don’t tell the media. It just made Ryan sound like a glorified defensive coordinator, like many suspect he is.

THE O LINE – They committed too many penalties, gave up pressure and did not open holes in the running game. The starters had three penalties, two from new right guard Willie Colon. Austin Howard struggled against Willie Young and pressure from Young led to the Sanchez interception. The Jets have no depth on the line either. The second line looked terrible.

More then the pic  6,I'm done with Sanchez over that stupid "Alice"  head band that he is obliviously making a fashion statement with.  Some 16 YO girl must have told him it makes him look manly.

If your Tom Brady you can get away with doing girly stuff and still be cool.  If your Mark Sanchez, not so much.

I'm with you. But for the record, Tom Brady can't get away with it either.

so the media doesn't think rex isn't the loser because of the sloppy play, penalties and turnovers, its because of what he said to the media

mmmmk

I'm pretty sure they think he's a loser cause he's a loser. Why does he lose? cause after 4 ******* years of ignoring the offense and somehow getting a reprieve nothing seems to have clicked. He isn't losing cause his defense, we know he can coach that. He's not in Baltimore anymore

When your biggest problem for the team's future is the QB position on your team and you say you did not watch any of the offense plays - well this just stupid -i have no other word for it- stupid for him to even just say it

a loser who is a head coach in the NFL, a mutli- millionaire, took the freaking  jets to the playoffs twice and beat manning and brady on the road, and has a (kinda) hot wife.

if you think he's a loser, why do you want him involved in the offense ?

( I was adressing costello's article btw)

is this dumb idea about him teaching defense during a pre-season instead of watching a glorified practice by the offense getting big play on sports radio or something ?  hell, even cimini said its a non story

No one at the guard position can be relied upon, it's a tire fire.

Vlad embarrassed himself again, the depth does suck.

JMO the problem with the OL is that Colon has never played RG, Peterman never played LG it's too much change and for no good reason. Is the plan to start Winters at LG and Colon at RG? What is the plan for this position?

They used to aspire to be a top 5 unit now it's right about average (16 out of 32).  But it could get far worse, if the guard situation doesn't improve, quick.

Good point. I just think Rex proves he is not a HC with each and every game the Jets play.

But that is the essence of Rex. He is stupid and expects that we all are too. Let's face it, this is his last go round. He has thrown everyone he possibly could under the bus that is now bearing down on him.

Who the hell did Rex throw under the bus? He's the guy that stuck up for and stuck with Mark freaking Sanchez. If anything, he's one of the most loyal coaches in the league.
