T0mShane
John Idzik pushing Rex Ryan to make staff changes Kevin Patra Around the League writer The signs Rex Ryan will return as the New York Jets' coach have grown positive the last several weeks. However, a final decision on the coach's future is yet to be made. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Jets general manager John Idzik is pushing Ryan to make changes on his defensive staff, according to a person with knowledge of the team's thinking. Ryan has one year remaining on his contract. His assistants don't have deals past this season. Jets linebacker coach Brian VanGorder is already heading to Notre Dame to be its defensive coordinator, Rapoport reported Saturday. Dennis Thurman, who has been with the Jets for four seasons, is in his first campaign as defensive coordinator. Rapoport reported Saturday that Ryan and Idzik have been getting along well lately and there were positive vibes emanating from Florham Park about the Jets' future. The future of Gang Green's coaching position could hinge on whether Ryan gets contracts for his coaching staff -- especially after the defense has performed well this season. Jetsfan80
This could play into Rex NOT getting an extension. It's difficult to keep your staff around on a 1-year deal.
faba
Rumors galore-I do not believe any of this.
gangreenman
Wouldn't be shocked if true. Idzik probably wants Rex to find a DC he trusts to handle the playcalling and every day responsibilities of leading the defensive unit so Rex can pay more attention to the rest of the team and the Head Coaching responsibilities during games. Lizard King
So the idea is to undermine Rex's authority to his coaching staff. I see this ending well.

I think the idea is to take control of this formerly rudderless ship. Like a GM is supposed to.
Jettington
Important to note that this article was written before the game yesterday, not that that means all that much since Rex was told he would return before the game. But what does changes mean? This seems like a non-story to me; if much of his staff is on the last year of their contracts then obviously he needs to make changes deciding who should be kept, who should be let go, and who should be brought in from outside. Yeah, I don't see what the problem is here. The GM sees problems he suggests solutions.
