Buster Skrine to enter camp as Jets' starting outside corner ~ ~ ~

Cutting Antonio Cromartie was a no-brainer this offseason for the Jets. But what about Cromartie's replacement as the No. 2 corner opposite Darrelle Revis ?

There are a handful of possible options. The Jets could promote backup Marcus Williams, and they could move slot corner Buster Skrine. Plus, they also have Dee Milliner, who is also entering the final year of his rookie contract. But Millinerdidn't play a defensive snap last year due to injury.Tuesday morning at the NFL Annual Meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., Jets head coachTodd Bowles again said there would be a competition, but this time he added that Skrine would enter training camp as the prospective starter on the outside."Obviously, Buster played the most, so he'll probably start out there," Bowles said. "But we'll see, as training camp comes, what the competition brings, and who wins it."

At last month's NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Bowles would only say that the competition is "open right now," though he did allow that Skrine was capable of playing both inside and outside. The Jets used their nickel package a great deal in 2015, and Skrine played nearly 70 percent of the snaps, mostly out of the slot.

Bowles on Tuesday also indicated that Skrine would continue to work in the slot next season, too.Williams led the Jets with six interceptions last season. But he played just 27 percent of the snaps, mostly as a fill-in when either Cromartie or Revis were injured, but also as the dime corner when the Jets went with six defensive backs.Bowles has frequently said in the past he likes Williams. But clearly, Williams will have to prove he's up to being an every-down player.

After that, it's Milliner, about whom Bowles on Tuesday said, "I've never seen him healthy, so I don't know." And then comes Dexter McDougle. One experienced backup corner, Darrin Walls, remains a free agent. There's also next month's draft, where the Jets could always choose to select another corner with one of their sic picks.

The corner position leaves much to be desired, which is ridiculous considering 30 million dollars is tied up in the position. It's Revis, a massively overrated slot guy, two injured unproven high draft picks, and an undrafted guy who shows potential in spurts but looks less attractive in long looks. The Jets will need to remedy this position with a draft pick, and a high one at that.

todd Bowles created a bit of a stir yesterday when he indicated Buster Skrine would open training camp as Antonio Cromartie's replacement. If Skrine takes over the spot, it would really mean that he is lining up in a different spot. He might take Cromartie's position on the outside, but he is not necessarily going to see alarge increase in snaps. As the slot cornerback last year, Skrine was already a starter for the Jets. He had the seventh most defensive snaps on the team. Yes, the Jets did have a few injuries at cornerback that increased his snap total in certain games but not by much. Skrine played in over half of the snaps in 12 of the 16 games. In 9 of the 16 games, he played over 70% of the snaps.

If you watch the NFL, you hear frequently how it is a passing league. That is true.

Quinn told me NFL teams used nickel defenses 60% of the time last year. He expects that number to increase in 2016.

This is an era of teams spreading the field. In today's NFL, teams have three starting cornerbacks. Last year for the Jets they were Darrelle Revis, Cromartie, and Skrine.busSkrine might move outside to take Cromartie's role, but that means somebody needs to take Skrine's slot snaps, which is the workload of a starter (or quite possible, Skrine will slide to the slot when the Jets use three corners). Whether that is Marcus Williams or someone else remains to be seen, but the Jets are getting increased snaps from a cornerback next season.
