On the Bills' third play of the game, they attacked Revis and hit paydirt -- an 84-yard scoring pass to Marquise Goodwin. The Jets played a Cover 3 zone, with Revis responsible for the left third of the field. Goodwin, who tried out for the U.S. Olympic team as a sprinter, blew past Revis with a go route. Revis said, "It was a good throw and a good catch. He's a fast guy." He was in no mood to give an expansive explanation. This week, the Jets used a variety of coverages instead of assigning Revis to the opponents' No. 1 receiver. The Bills' No. 1 is Sammy Watkins, who played on a bum foot. kelly
Reaching into the mailbag for a New York Jets question that has become a hot-button issue : How are the Jets going to correct all these "chunk play" errors that they have been making? #jetsmail 10:04 AM - 16 Sep 2016 @RichCimini: Before I answer the question, allow me to share this rather mind-boggling statistic, courtesy of the good folks at ESPN Stats & Information. The Jets already have allowed two touchdown passes that have traveled at least 50 yards in the air (see: A.J. Green and Marquise Goodwin), giving them four such plays since 2006 -- tied for the league lead. Here's another way to look at it: They allowed as many in a five-day span as they did in the previous 10 years. Not good. It's especially not good when you consider their best cover guy,Darrelle Revis, was involved in both of them. The Jets have allowed 663 passing yards, including completions of 54, 54, 49, 32, 84 and 71 yards. They let Greg Salas, of all people, score on a 71-yard pass. How does that happen? At first glance, Rontez Miles, who replaced Calvin Pryor for one play, appeared like the guilty party, but Todd Bowles absolved Miles of any blame. He wouldn't identify the culprit, but after reviewing the tape, it had to be Buster Skrine or Marcus Gilchrist. I'm sure Bowles is losing some sleep over these breakdowns because, after all, he's a former safety who made his bones by coaching the secondary. There's nothing more demoralizing for a defense -- an entire team, for that matter -- than giving up huge plays. It doesn't matter if the defensive line makes five sacks a game; it means nothing if the ball keeps flying over their heads. Some of the problems stem from miscommunication -- or, as Bowles said, "It's day-one, training-camp stuff." The Salas touchdown came when the Bills ran a "bunch" formation, confusing the Jets. In Week 1, theCincinnati Bengals hurt them with bunch formations. News flash : They'll keep seeing them until they correct the breakdowns. Their next opponent is the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Andy Reid is a clever offensive mind who knows how to attack defenses with route combinations and formations. The Jets need to clean it up or else opponents will continue to ring up huge passing numbers. Also keep an eye on Revis and how he's deployed. On Friday, Bowles acknowledged the plan was to use Revis on the Buffalo Bills' No. 2 receiver, allowing them to double Sammy Watkins with two others. That, folks, is the first sign that Revis, once the best of the best, no longer is seen the same way by the organization. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/63209/how-the-jets-can-prevent-chunk-plays-and-protect-darrelle-revis
kelly
Through two games, the Jets are 1-1, coming off a big win Thursday in Buffalo. They've done a lot of encouraging things so far, but their secondary has been, for the most part, underwhelming. Big passing plays have bitten the Jets. There was Bengals receiver A.J. Green's 54-yard touchdown catch in the opener. The Bengals also had catches of 29, 32, 49, and 54 yards in Week 1.Then came Thursday in Buffalo, where the Bills had touchdown catches of 71 and 84 yards. Star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who struggled against Green in the opener, was burned on that 84-yard touchdown by Marquise Goodwin. After Andy Dalton threw for 366 yards against the Jets in Week 1, Tyrod Taylor passed for 297 against them Thursday.Of the 663 total passing yards for Dalton and Taylor, 373 (56 percent) came on those aforementioned seven big plays. All told, Dalton and Taylor completed 41 passes against the Jets, with more than half their yards coming on seven passes. Yes, the Jets did have a big fourth quarter interception Thursday by corner Marcus Williams, at their 13-yard line. Nonetheless, they have issues in their secondary that need correcting. They get some extra time to do it, before their next game, Sept. 25 at the Chiefs. Then they have to face two tough quarterbacks in back-to-back weeks, coming out of the Kansas City trip — Seattle's Russell Wilson and Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger. The Jets need to figure out what's up with their secondary quickly. Coach Todd Bowles knows teams will continue to throw the deep ball on the Jets until they show they can stop it."It's a copycat league," Bowles said. "Any time somebody sees somebody have success in something, they're going to do it until you put the fire out." Revis, for one, isn't overly worried."You take your lumps and you take the good with the bad," he said. Bowles isn't concerned about Revis perhaps declining, at this stage of his career."He gave up two plays," Bowles said. "I don't think that's an indication of the whole season. He'll be better."Revis was beaten by Green on that 54-yard touchdown catch in Week 1, but Revis also should've had safety help on the play. Does Revis have lingering concerns about the Jets' secondary ? "No," he said. "We get a couple days off here. It's definitely some time for us to tighten some things up and correct some things as a team and move forward." Bowles (sort of) agreed with Revis. "We have to correct two busted coverages," Bowles said Thursday night. "One play they just made [Goodwin's touchdown] and the other was a busted coverage [the 71-yard touchdown by Greg Salas]. That's two weeks in a row that's happened, and we have to definitely correct that. That's the biggest concern for me." Bowles added this on Friday: "The communication has got to be cleaner. It's Day 1 training camp stuff that we shouldn't be busting. We've got to make sure we correct that." It initially looked like Rontez Miles was to blame on that 71-yard touchdown. It was the only snap Miles played Thursday. Bowles said Miles was in because strong safety Calvin Pryor "got a little banged up." "That was a bust, and we watched it on film," Bowles said of the touchdown. "It was not really Rontez's fault, but that was a bust in coverage." A bright spot for the Jets' secondary has been Williams, their outside corner in the nickel package, which they use often. He now has two interceptions this season, and nine for his three-year career, despite starting just 12 career games. He has played in 23. Since the beginning of the 2015 season, Williams has played 203 defensive snaps and has eight picks. And his 19.7 picks per 500 pass attempts faced — minimum 100 pass attempts faced — lead the NFL by a large margin, according to ESPN's Bill Barnwell. The next-closest player has 9.3 picks per 500 pass attempts faced. Williams is the only Jets player with an interception so far this season. What makes him so effective ? "I think he's very smart," Revis said. "And he's a ball hawk. We say usually at practice: The ball finds him. When the ball finds him, he makes a play. To us, it's normal. He does it at practice." > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/how_worried_should_jets_be_about_their_secondary_a.html#incart_river_index
kelly
The New York Jets are allowing too many big plays on defense, and the root of the problem -- surprisingly -- is star cornerback Darrelle Revis. On Thursday night, Revis was burned for the second consecutive game, putting coach Todd Bowles in the unusual position of having to explain why the seven-time Pro Bowl selection is struggling."He gave up two plays," Bowles said Friday, 14 hours after a 37-31 road win over the Buffalo Bills. "I mean, I don't think that'll be an indication of the whole season. He gave up two plays. He knows he doesn't want to give them up and we know we don't want him to give them up. "We've got to correct them. He'll be better and we'll move on from there." The latest touchdown was an 84-yard reception by speedster Marquise Goodwin, the Bills' No. 3 wide receiver. On Buffalo's third play, he ran a go route and blew past Revis, 31, who made a futile attempt to tackle him from behind after Goodwin hauled in Tyrod Taylor's pass.In the season opener, Revis was matched against Cincinnati Bengals starA.J. Green and got beat on a 54-yard touchdown catch. Revis, who was supposed to have safety help on the deep post, hesitated slightly and didn't have enough catch-up speed to close ground. In a span of five days, Revis surrendered two touchdown passes that traveled at least 50 yards in the air, equaling the team's total from the previous 10 years, according to ESPN Stats & Information."Good throw, good catch," Revis said of Goodwin's touchdown. "He's fast. He's definitely fast." Goodwin, who has sprinter's speed, participated in the U.S. Olympic trials in the long jump earlier this year. Revis, who is in the second year of a five-year, $70 million contract and is making a guaranteed $17 million this season, said he was unaware of Goodwin's Olympic bid, but he was familiar with his reputation as one of the fastest players in the NFL.Bowles used Revis in a new role against the Bills. Instead of covering the No. 1 receiver, as he has done throughout his career, Revis was assigned to the No. 2 or No. 3, perhaps a concession that he no longer is the lockdown defender he was in his prime. Bowles said the plan was to roll coverage to Sammy Watkins, the Bills' No. 1 receiver. "The thought was to try to double [Watkins] some and let Darrelle take away the other guy," Bowles said. "We had discussed this in the summer. That's what we were going to try to do."Watkins, who burned the Jets (mainly Revis) for 11 catches and 136 yards in the 2015 finale, was limited Thursday night by a foot injury. The Jets (1-1) have allowed 663 passing yards in two games, including scoring plays of 84, 71 and 54 yards. They're vulnerable, and opponents will try to exploit that weakness, and perhaps Revis."It's a copy-cat league," Bowles said. "Anytime someone sees somebody have success with something, they're going to do it until you put the fire out." > http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/17564538/new-york-jets-vow-darrelle-revis-better
Villain The Foe
Revis has never been good against world class speed and Wes Welker played in the slot. This isnt 2009 and people who expected that Revis fooled themselves. What im most concerned about is that Revis is not jamming at the line. The majority of Revis success as a corner was his ability to beat up the WR at the LOS, mess up timing routes, maintain physicality within the first 5 yards then be in position to track any pass beyond those 5 yards because he maintained great position after pounding on WR's. Revis is getting beat because Revis isnt playing his game. He's basically playing Antonio Cromarties game, which is "let the WR get a free release every down". Is his wrist still injured? Is this just the style of our DC's defense? I dont know, but when Revis was "The Island" it was back when he destroyed WR's at the LOS to the point where QB's knew that their #1 target was pretty much not an option. As for guys like Wes Welker, you're not jamming slot receivers at the line for the most part. Revis lost a step, but he went against AJ Green and gave up a bomb to a guy who's more of a world class track star than he is a WR. Im more worried about the lack of physicality at the line than Revis getting beat by track stars. How about letting Revis get physical with the WR's. Sammy Watkins is a perfect example. All summer we heard about how Watkins was destroying Revis in the week 17 game. Revis was giving Watkins 7 to 8 yards of cushion on every play given his wrist injury, and Watkins put up 11 catches for 140 yards on 15 targets. The first meeting Revis was healthy and was putting hands on Watkins at the LOS. Watkins ended the game with 3 catches for 14 yards on 7 targets which was his lowest production of last season. That sounds like "The Island" to me. Same guys, drastically different results because the first game Revis put hands on him and the 2nd game he was giving him a 1st down worth of cushion. Let Revis jam at the line, but if his wrist isnt up for the job then give him safety help, plain and simple.
kelly
A look at what's happening around the New York Jets : ~ ~ 6. Revis fallout : The amount of criticism Revis is receiving is rather eye-opening. We're talking about a cornerback, not a quarterback. To me, this illustrates just how dominant he was during his prime. He raised the bar so high for the position that, in a way, he has become a victim of his own success. The "Revis Island" moniker, too, has come back to bite him. A lot of people, including that NBA airhead J.R. Smith, are having fun with it.Revis should've ignored him. Why lower yourself to Smith's level ? As for the immediate future, I don't think Bowles will continue to use Revis exclusively on the opponents' No. 1 receiver. He adopted that strategy against the Bills, but it wasn't a good test case because the Bills' No. 1, Sammy Watkins, was less than 100 percent because of a football injury. The ultimate test will be in Week 5 when the Jets face thePittsburgh Steelers and Antonio Brown. rest of the above article : > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/63216/jets-welcome-matt-forte-with-heavy-workload-too-heavy-for-own-good
kelly
Matt BowenESPN Staff Writer Watching film on New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis. I don't think Revis has the recovery speed we saw during his prime playing years, but his struggles over the first two weeks of the season point to some technique issues. Alignment, depth, eyes, footwork. Revis can still play in my opinion and there are many examples on the film where he checks wide receivers in coverage. But at this point of his career, Revis has to win with technique and experience. kelly
Lost in the euphoria of the Jets’ 37-31 comeback road victory over the Bills on Thursday night, lost in the 493 yards of offense they tattooed onto the backside of Rex Ryan’s defense and lost Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 374-yard exorcism of his Ryan demons is an issue they never thought would arise this year. Darrelle Revis. What to do about the Jets’ star, who through two games has shown signs he is no longer the shutdown cornerback he was when the “Revis Island’’ nickname became the perfect marketing tool and earned him millions of dollars.Through two games — each of which has included Revis playing a large part in yielding a long touchdown pass — the day appears to have come when the Jets no longer can simply trot the 31-year-old onto the field, point him in the direction of the opponents’ best receiver and say, “Sic him.’’ Yes, it is only two games, which is not a large enough sample to call it a full-blown crisis or trend. But Revis giving up that 84-yard TD pass to Buffalo receiver Marquise Goodwin, four days after he was lit up by the Bengals’ A.J. Green for 12 catches and 180 yards, including a 54-yard TD, should be cause for alarm in the team’s defensive meetings. In the days when Revis Island was an exclusive a piece of real estate, it would take him a couple of months to yield 180 receiving yards. Fifty-four yards on one play in the first week and 84 on one play the next week? That was unheard of.“He gave up two plays; I don’t think that’s an indication of a whole season,’’ coach Todd Bowles said diplomatically Friday. “We’ve got to correct it and move on. He’ll be better and we’ll move on from there.’’ Bowles, a former NFL defensive back with a terrific defensive mind, now is faced with the task of figuring out how best to use Revis, who remains the best defensive back on the team, and — until further notice — one of the better corners in the league.Bowles already made a switch in strategy before the Buffalo game, opting to double Sammy Watkins, the Bills’ top receiver who caught 11 passes for 136 yards on Revis in the season finale last year, and putting Revis on Goodwin. “We discussed this in the summer that this was what we were going to try to do,’’ Bowles said. Before this season, there was some concession in Revis’ voice when he spoke about one day being moved to safety, something many cornerbacks do as their coverage skills diminish to prolong their careers. That time is not now. But changes must be made. Because if they aren’t, big, game-turning chunk plays like the ones to Green and Goodwin, who had a total of 66 receiving yards since the start of the 2014 season before Thursday night, are likely to keep coming. “It’s a copycat league,’’ Bowles said. “Any time somebody sees somebody have success with something they’re going to do it until you put the fire out.’’It is up to Bowles and his defensive scheming to help Revis extinguish the flames, beginning with the Jets next game, Sept. 25 against the Chiefs in Kansas City. Until then, Revis will continue to take his lumps. This is what happens when the best in their sport show signs of deteriorating.Even former Knicks guard J.R. Smith joined the fray of sarcastic detractors when he trolled Revis with this Twitter tweak: “Damn #RevisIsland is turning into a tourist resort.’’ Revis didn’t wait long to hit back, tweeting: “@TheRealJRSmith still heading to Canton though. What about you???” Jets star receiver Brandon Marshall, who was entangled in a training camp tussle with Revis, will have no part of the Revis trashing.“I stand in front of the world and I say: ‘Darrelle Revis is the best cornerback in this league,’ ’’ Marshall said in a postgame interview on the NFL Network on Thursday night. “He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He gave up some big plays last week. But regardless of how he’s playing right now, he’s still the best. You’ll see him back to Revis Island, back to shutting guys down in a couple of weeks.” > http://nypost.com/2016/09/17/jets-must-address-darrelle-revis-problem-sooner-rather-than-later/

kelly
Pump the brakes: Darrelle Revis isn't toast yet 7:15 AM ET Matt BowenESPN Staff Writer Facebook Twitter Pinterest Email comment Early in the first quarter of the New York Jets' Week 2 win over theBuffalo Bills, cornerback Darrelle Revis lined up in off-man coverage versus wide receiver Marquise Goodwin. The route? It was a straight go -- a deep ball over the top. And Revis got beat. The veteran cornerback failed to stay on top of the route and Goodwin used his legit track speed to put six points on the board. But does that one route -- or the up-and-down tape from Week 1 versus Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green -- mean that Revis is done? Nah, let's not get ahead of ourselves. kelly
-- On Wednesday, Hall-of-Fame player/analyst Michael Irvin told WFAN radio he's "worried about the psyche and attitude of the whole Jets defense" because, in his view, it no longer can count on Darrelle Revis as a lockdown cornerback. Revis' teammates aren't buying that theory one bit. "I haven't lost any confidence or belief in him, and I don't think he's lost any confidence in himself, either," linebacker Erin Henderson said Wednesday. "It's just a matter of going out these next couple of weeks and shutting up everybody, like he's done for his entire career. "You'll see Reve go out there and be Reve, the same way as always. He'll be the playmaker he always has been." No one on the Jets knows Revis better than linebacker David Harris. They were drafted the same year, 2007. Harris believes Revis' struggles have been blown out of proportion because of the media world we live in. "This is the age of social media, and hate spreads faster than love," Harris said. "Everybody thinks they're a comedian, but at the end of the day, I'll take him over everybody else. I still think he's the best corner."Perhaps concerned about his ability to cover Sammy Watkins, the coaches changed Revis' role in last week's win against the Buffalo Bills. Instead of following Watkins for the entire game, Revis played the wide left side on 37 snaps, as opposed to only one snap on the wide right. (There were another 12 snaps in various positions, mainly the slot.) One factor can't be discounted: Watkins was slowed by a foot injury, so that probably impacted the Jets' strategy. It will be interesting to see how the Jets defend the Kansas City Chiefs (1-1) on Sunday. Their No. 1 receiver is Jeremy Maclin (11 catches, 131 yards, one touchdown), who lines up everywhere in the formation, including the slot. In the not-so-old days, the Jets would put Revis on Maclin, effectively shutting down half the field. If the Chiefs are smart, they will put rookie speedster Tyreek Hill on Revis' side and test him with a deep ball, the way the Bills did with Marquise Goodwin. The Jets are vulnerable to the long ball, in case you haven't noticed. "It's a copycat league," coach Todd Bowles said. "Until you put out the fire, you're going to keep seeing it." > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/63304/darrelle-revis-teammates-expect-jets-corner-to-shut-up-his-critics
kelly
— Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis hasn't exactly looked great through two games. But don't count Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers among those who are worried about whether Revis is still an elite corner, in his 10th season."I think he has made two bad plays," Rodgers said. "Otherwise, we think he has been doing a pretty good job. One of those plays was Bills wide receiver Marquise Goodwin's 84-yard touchdown in Week 2. Rodgers insisted he couldn't remember the other play — or even whether it happened in Week 2 or in the opener against the Bengals.Bengals receiver A.J. Green got past Revis for a 54-yard touchdown in Week 1, but the Jets blew the coverage on that play, as Revis should've had safety help. So that touchdown wasn't really Revis' fault — at least not entirely. Still, by his own admission, Revis struggled against Green overall in Week 1.Goodwin is a blazing-fast receiver. Rodgers said he doesn't have any concerns about the 31-year-old Revis covering fast guys like Goodwin one-on-one."We don't think so with Revis," Rodgers said. kelly
Jets mailbag time, gang. And away we go, with your questions and our answers ... @DarrylSlater Revis torched last 3 games. Jets continue to be stubborn? 2:54 PM - 23 Sep 2016 Yes, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has not exactly played well this season. And while I don't think you'll see Revis exclusively defending Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin one-on-one Sunday, you'll probably see some of that. Kacy Rodgers, the Jets' defensive coordinator, insisted he has not lost faith in Revis. And if the Jets' coaching staff still views Revis as a very good corner — even if those outside the organization are growing skeptical — then I would anticipate the Jets continuing to trust Revis. > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/can_darrelle_revis_turn_things_around_at_chiefs_je.html#incart_river_index
kelly
-- Residual feelings from the Darrelle Revis-Richard Sherman feud, dormant for nearly three years, resurfaced Thursday in the New York Jets' locker room. Moments after declaring Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks "a must-win for us," the Jets' star cornerback's mood turned snippy when asked about his Seattle counterpart.Revis interrupted a reporter in mid-question when Sherman's name was mentioned in relation to their acrimonious history. "We're not going there," Revis said. The reporter tried again. "We're not going there," Revis said. Again, the reporter attempted to finish the question. "We're not going there," Revis snapped. Finally, Revis was asked his opinion of Sherman as a player. "No opinion," he said. "We're not going there. We're not going there. Seahawks' offense" -- meaning he only wanted to answer questions onRussell Wilson & Co. Things got nasty between Revis and Sherman in 2013, when Revis was regarded as the best corner in the NFL and Sherman apparently wanted to dethrone him.Sherman posted their stats on Twitter, bragging, "Women lie, men lie, numbers don't lie." Revis fired back: "I never seen a man before run his mouth so much like girl. This dude just steady putting my name in his mouth to get notoriety."Sherman might have taunted Revis in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015, gleefully holding up "24" with his fingers moments after Revis, who wears No. 24, was burned for a touchdown. At the time, Revis was playing for the New England Patriots. Sherman also could've been referring to the Seahawks' point total at the time, 24. Revis got the last laugh, as the Patriots won the Super Bowl. Sunday will be their first meeting since then. It's a huge game for the Jets (1-2), coming off an eight-turnover loss to theKansas City Chiefs.Revis called it a must-win because the Jets need "to regain the momentum back for the team, and for us moving forward. I think this Sunday, with a win, that would be a kick-starter for us, and start us up for the rest of the season." > http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/17670918/darrelle-revis-new-york-jets-declines-discuss-feud-seahawks-richard-sherman

kelly
-- One of the most gifted cornerbacks of this generation grew up near Pittsburgh and nurtured his island within a few yards ofSteelers personnel evaluators. University of Pittsburgh football shares a practice facility with the Steelers, who were evaluating defensive players for the 15th overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin had seen All-American Darrelle Revis up close dozens of times before hosting him for a formal interview."They had more exposure to Darrelle than anyone," former Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt said. "Mike and Kevin could watch us practice from their desks." As the Steelers and New York Jets prepare for Sunday's matchup in Heinz Field, back-to-back draft picks from nine years ago will help lead their respective defenses. At No. 15 overall, the Steelers made a prudent pick with Lawrence Timmons, a former Pro Bowl linebacker with five 100-plus-tackle seasons and two missed games over his career. Timmons has validated the selection. But when the Jets parachuted into the 14th selection via trade with theCarolina Panthers, some around the league believed they were blocking the Steelers from taking Revis, who's on his second stint with the Jets. Even Revis wondered about that, telling the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the night of the draft, "I figured I'd be going to the Steelers," an Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, native ready to give his hometown team years of coverage assurance in the AFC North. After a Hall of Fame trajectory and nearly $120 million in career earnings, Revis giggles good–naturedly about the almost pairing when asked Wednesday during a conference call with Steelers media."If it would have happened, in a perfect world, I don't think it would have been a bad pick, I'll tell you that," Revis said. Asked whether he wanted to be a Steeler at the time, Revis said he has never been one to predict his future and doesn't play "shoulda, coulda, woulda." But Revis was more definitive about Pittsburgh's chances at landing Revis in 2015 free agency, saying negotiations were more than complimentary. "There was definitely an interest there," said Revis, who eventually re-upped with New York. Tomlin acknowledged the Steelers at least took a hard look back in 2007, but the details are hazy. "That’s so long ago, I can’t remember. ... He went off the board, I think, before we picked," Tomlin said. "I think he was probably the top corner in that draft, so I looked at him in the ways you look at top corners in the draft, ones that you probably don’t get a chance to take." The Steelers often follow the best-player-available mantra in the first round, with positional need a consideration. For example, taking two outside linebackers and two interior offensive linemen since 2010 is not by accident.Cornerback has been a need for a while now, and Revis was indeed high on Pittsburgh's draft board. From Justin Gilbert to Marcus Peters, the Steelers have been known to target cornerbacks who were gone by the time their pick was up. Revis' stock began to soar once he ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash. That raw speed pushed him out of reach. "From what I was told, they loved [Revis]," said Wannstedt of the Steelers. "But there were rumors about how high he'd be drafted. I think they would have been comfortable taking him." One source with knowledge of the Steelers' draft that year said Tomlin's affection for Timmons was hard to ignore, and it might have broken any Revis-Timmons tie for the pick. Tomlin had done substantial research on Timmons from his days as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which is less than a five-hour drive to Tallahassee, where Timmons played at Florida State. Getting a tone-setting linebacker was a welcome notion for a then-first-year head coach. Timmons kept hearing Pittsburgh was high on him but remembers being a naive 20-year-old who had no idea what was happening."It would have made more sense for the hometown guy to get picked," said Timmons of Revis. "He's from Aliquippa, and you know the football history there. They said I would go top 15, so as a kid from South Carolina, just going top 15 was a blessing for me."Timmons said that he and Revis playing in the same game nearly 10 years after being drafted with consecutive picks is "just weird," in the best possible way. The six defensive players drafted before Revis and Timmons are all out of the league. While it's still unclear where the Steelers organization ranked both players, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said Pittsburgh needed linebacker help and Timmons could really play."I actually had a slightly higher grade on Timmons coming out than Revis," Kiper said. "Timmons had a really high grade and was considered one of the top players in that draft. Taking him was not something that was a disappointment to anybody once that Revis was gone ... Timmons filled a big need and turned out to be a heckuva player." Revis, 31, and Timmons, 30, are still good players but don't fly around the field like they did back in 2007. Receivers and quarterbacks don't seem to fear Revis Island as much. Revis has talked about the possibility of moving to safety one day. Timmons is in the last year of a contract that pays him $8.7 million in base salary, and the Steelers weren't close to re-signing him before the season started, an indication that they might part ways in 2017. But Tomlin points to both players still starting games in a youth-movement league as a special feat, a reminder the Steelers faced a win-win proposition in that war room nine years ago."I’m sure there are a lot of guys around them in that draft who have moved on with life," Tomlin said. "You tip your cap to those guys, not only in terms of what they’re capable of -- I think that speaks to their draft position -- but, their 10-year body speaks more to what they’re willing to do. I’m sure being good teammates is a part of that." > http://www.espn.com/blog/pittsburgh-steelers/post/_/id/20576/how-pittsburgh-kid-darrelle-revis-could-have-been-a-steeler
