faba
Injured Shockey questions Giants' strategy EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Jeremy Shockey asked to be taken out during parts of the second half and for the entire overtime of the New York Giants game against the Philadelphia Eagles last weekend because his injured right ankle hurt so much. Advertisment The frustrated Pro Bowl tight end also wondered why he was playing in the final preseason game when the original ankle injury happened in late August. When asked specifically whether he should have been on the field for the preseason finale, the Pro Bowl tight end refused to comment. "I just want to do as much as I can to help this team win and that's frustrating," Shockey said in his first extensive interview in more than a week. "It's frustrating to know I could have made a play and didn't because of my injury. "There is nothing you can do," he added. "I have been in that training room 24 hours a day, trying to get it better. It will get better and I will be healthy. I will be a lot more healthy after this bye week." Shockey left no doubt that he will play on Sunday when the Giants (1-1) face the Seahawks (2-0) in Seattle. New York has a bye the following week. "He looked pretty good today," coach Tom Coughlin said. "Hopefully he'll make progress again tomorrow." The original injury is a touchy topic for Shockey. It happened on Aug. 31 against the New England Patriots. Shockey said he caught a pass and New England lineman Richard Seymour fell on his ankle while making a tackle. Shockey also appeared to hurt the ankle on a short run by Tiki Barber four plays into the Giants' first possession. The fact that he was playing in the first place was the issue with Shockey. He said 75 percent of NFL starters don't play in the final preseason game and insinuated that Coughlin played his starters because Patriots coach Bill Belichick started some. Coughlin had said in the week leading up to the game that his starters would play about a dozen plays. "I had an unfortunate accident," Shockey said. "I can't do anything about it now." Shockey had five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown in the season-opening 26-21 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, but he struggled in the 30-24 overtime win over the Eagles. He caught two passes for 16 yards, including an 8-yard catch late in the fourth quarter on which he hobbled to get out of bounds. The completion, coupled with a 15-yard personal foul against Eagles lineman Trent Cole, helped set up Jay Feely's game-tying 35-yard field goal. After that, Shockey asked Coughlin to use backup Visanthe Shiancoe at tight end. Shiancoe had set up Tim Carter's fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter by knocking a loose ball away from Philadelphia safety Michael Lewis. "I felt like 'Shank' could have done a better job than I could do, the ankle was hurting so bad," Shockey said. "Given his opportunities, he made his plays. He made a great play pushing the guy out of the way and allowing Tim Carter to get the ball after Plaxico (Burress) fumbled. I could not have done that." Since he has been unable to practice much in the first two weeks of the season, Shockey has spent more time studying the game plan and doing classwork to prepare. "I am very glad the bye week is this early," Shockey said. "It seems to me I have been very depressed the last couple of weeks, more at myself than anyone else because I was hurt in a preseason game against the Patriots. I have to move on and get better." The nagging injury is just latest in a series that have slowed Shockey in his five years with the Giants. He's been bothered by toe, back, knee and ankle injuries. The Miami product who seemingly does everything at full speed also sustained his first concussion in training camp. "This week no one is healthy," Shockey said. "Everyone is banged up and questionable, probable. It's part of this week. I'm not going to slow it down and take it easy until I retire."
JetCane
Shockey said he caught a pass and New England lineman Richard Seymour fell on his ankle while making a tackle I'd like to see the play. Was it a dirty hit like the low hit Seymour put on Chad last week?
124
Shockey is a P.O.S. He had a good rookie year and has been over-rated since. He is NOT a Top 5 TE.

124
He's better than any TE we currently have on the team. True. But I wouldn't want him on my team. I'll settle with Chris Baker.
JetCane
I'd take him. Football games arent won by personality contests. Were you an Abraham fan when he was here? Do you think Coles has a winning personality? What about Barlow? Give me players who will go thru a wall for the team, and I dont care if they lose etiquette contests. Who are your top five tight ends? I assume Gates is one, just give me the other four. Give me players who will go thru a wall for the team, and I dont care if they lose etiquette contests. Spoken like a true Hurricane fan. LOL! I'd take Sean Taylor on my team in a heartbeat, too. And Clinton Portis is a bit of a wack job, too. The way I look at it, sometimes being a little off-center is a good thing for a football player.

JetCane
Porter is also kind of a jerk, but can play some football. I hate the killer dogs though, and think its absurd to own one.
JerryK
I have a question for the JN.com historians. If Jeremy Shockey hadn't called someone a homo, would this website exist today? Just curious.
Maxman
He's better than any TE we currently have on the team. LOL, we don't have a top 25 TE on this roster. That doesn't prove much!

JetCane
Some guys talk the talk, (like Coles) but if they can walk the walk, I'm fine with that. I'd rather have some mouthy players who can back it up than a bunch of meek, me-too JAGs
Boozer76
I'm usually not one to defend Shockey, mostly because a guy who dated Tara Reid is really indefensible but anyway. One thing that can't be disputed is when Shockey is on the field he gives 120% every play. Why Coughlin has basically removed him form their entire offensive gameplan is beyond me. I hung out with Shockey and Tara Reid at a Knicks playoff game (not that long ago v. the Nets) and while I won't say they were great intellects, they were pretty funny - making fun of Jesse Palmer for being "the Bachelor"

A lot of our opinions are shaped by the darn main stream media, and we too often buy into what they are selling us. I also like it when people speak their minds; that's why i never complained about Coles mouthing off. I want to hear what these guys have to say when they are being honest. p.s. faba
To relate this to the Jets situation though most Jet fans I know hated Kevin Maewae for talking it up so I stand by that I want my players to perform on the field and not be mouthing off so much. JetCane
Mawae by many accounts was a cancer in the lockerroom. Coles isnt, and he went to far to call Mangini "ornery" and a "mean, little man". LOL There's talking and there's being a cancer.

jetophile
Like clockwork, Shockey, a cr*ppy ass baby, puts foot in mouth. Couglin should put foot up ass - and leave it there for a while. When I was a kid I remember watching highlights and saying I liked Sample. My Dad said he was a big mouth trash talker. Of course that's probably what I liked. Hammer and Sample were two early trash talking dbs. Johnny Sample was an original. Things were on the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement, and as to his views on inequality in the league, behind the scenes, extracurricular cr*p that went on on the field, good for him. The NFL's first openly (and rightfully so) Angry Brother with a justified chip on his shoulder with something to prove. And again, good for him. Namath kept things cool. Right on. It'd be nice if he could stay on the field, but otherwise I have no problem with him. I wouldn't mind if Ellis, Thomas or Robertson talked a little trash. It'd be nice if they made a tackle first though.
