Worst Hire so far

Based on backgrounds and franchises, I have to think the Kiffen hire has to be the worst. I truly thought Pitt would stay with one of the in house guys and not so sure about Tomlin but Kiffen is walking into the titanic.

id have to say Tomlin. i mean the Raiders, who thats any name would want that job anyway?? i assume they got all they could possibly get with this guy. on the other hand, why in the hell wouldnt the Steelers hire Whisenhunt considering they won the SB and had all the adversity this year, and furthermore why bring in a guy that runs a cover 2, when youve had all this success with the 3-4. doesnt make sense

I think Tomlin is the worst hire. He was a bad defensive coordinator on a bad team for one year and has a completely different philosophy than the Steelers' current one. Not to mention that the team already had two hot coaching candidates in-house and pushed both of them away by hiring a guy that is less qualified.

The Raiders weren't going to get anyone good. It's the Raiders. Kiffin can't be worse than Shell or Turner, though.

TOMLIN is the worst one...PITT is screwed

I agree. The whole fabric of the Steelers is gone.

Watch Cincy run away with the AFC North next year (Ravens are old & the Browns stink).

The Steelers won't be a factor for awhile.

Tomlin and Kiffen both seem to be pretty bad hires.

Of course, if anyone hires Llllllarry Coker then that would be the worst hire. But wait- no one has hired him! I wonder why that is...

PFT has a really nasty rumor about TOmlin gettng the Commissioner's psuch a la Herman Edwards after they'd already agreed to signing Grimm and were already in contract negotiations.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

DID STEELERS YANK RUG FROM GRIMM?

As the media continues to try to understand the process that resulted in conflicting reports regarding whether the Steelers would hire Mike Tomlin or Russ Grimm to be the team's next head coach, the hot rumor at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama (where various league types currently are gathered) is that Grimm was indeed offered the job before it went to Tomlin.

As the story goes, the Steelers called Grimm on Saturday and told him not to believe what the media was reporting about Tomlin. Then, the Steelers and Grimm negotiated a contract, and Grimm was told that he could tell his family that he was the guy, which he did.

But then, as the story goes, Commissioner Roger Goodell got involved and suggested to Steelers chairman Dan Rooney that it would be nice if the Steeler would hire one of the minority candidates, given that the Rooney Rule was named after him. Rooney relented.

On Sunday morning, Rooney met with Art II and Kevin Colbert and told them about the decision. Both initially disagreed because a deal had been done with Grimm. But the contract hadn't been signed, and Art II and Colbert deferred to Dan.

Grimm was then told about the decision, and he was obviously pissed. But, to date, he has been discreet regarding his displeasure, presumably because he plans to continue working in the industry that has only 32 job locations. Tomlin was then called on Sunday afternoon, and he was informed that he was the guy.

One source told us that he has been hearing this rumor "all day" in Alabama. Though we're not saying that any of this actually happened, the mere fact that this story is making the rounds at the Senior Bowl is newsworthy, in our opinion.

Especially since the events that transpired on Saturday night and Sunday were so damn bizarre.

Meanwhile, a reader tells us that Mike Prisuta of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has been insisting in radio appearances that his story linking Grimm to the job was on the money. Though we poked fun at Prisuta's predicament on Sunday, it could be that he was right, after all.

Both seem like bad hires.....Gotta feel just awful for Grimm, who was a terrific NFL player and payed his dues as an assistant....He's offered a job, next thing you know the commish steps and you are out

The Raiders choice makes even less sense, but the Raiders real coach is All Davis, so it doesn't matter if his "puppet coach" is 25 or 85 :bag:

Everybody's jumping the gun on these "bad hires". Some people probably said the same thing about the Mangini hire last year at this time. Only time will tell. As far as Pittsburgh there was a report that outgoing coach Bill Cowher did NOT recommend anyone on his staff for the job. If it's true that Grimm was indeed given the job 1st then F the Steelers. They got what they deserve if they fall flat on their faces next year.

Tonmlin was a better hire than Mangini. The Vikngs, with an awful offense, ranked higher than Mangini's 2005 Patriot defense in virtually every category of defense.

Vikings 2006 defensive rankings:

12th in total defense

1st in run defense

32nd in pass defense

30th in takeaways

14th in points allowed

Patriots 2005 defensive rankings:

26th total defense

8th in run defense

31st in pass defense

31st in takeaways

17th in points allowed....

yeah I agree. A head coach like mangini doesn't happen by very often but the trend is now young guys steppin up instead of recirculating the hc retreads around & around.

Exactly R44- no coach with experience will want to go into that situation. At least his father has some experience in the NFL
