does the term shut down corner really mean anything? is it an oxy moron?

Excellent thread.

No,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The NFL has eliminated the "shut down corner"

IN today's NFL if a CB even gets close to a WR, they throw a flag.

Thence forth everybody thinks the WR's have become the game..............They have, the Refs have made them that way.

Yes, #24, Mr. Revis, is as close to a shut down comer as there is in the NFL right now........................

The kid is really good

You are exactly right. Pass interference is now a joke. "Pass interference" is supposed to mean physically interfering with a receiver's ability to catch the ball before the ball arrives. Just making any kind of contact with a receiver does not necessarily mean you are interfering. But that is the way they call it.

It's crazy to think Revis is a rookie who came out his junior year and missed most of training camp. His toughness and jam at the line, awareness, and fluid hips are only going to improve. Future pro bowler. He's already the second best cornerback in the AFC East in my opinion.

either way, are we at a point where WR's are much better at their jobs than CB's?

No, it has nothing to do with WRs getting better. But it does have alot to do with the POS Colts whining to the NFL and having the CBs hands tied behind their backs.

To be a shut down corner you have to be so damn good that the opposition changes its game plan to avoid throwing the ball to your side or to their #1 receiver for an entire good. Then if they do throw to your side, you have to be good enough to punish them for their impudence.

Deon Sanders may have been the only true shut down corner in NFL history. If that is true then the shut down corner became extinct when he retired.

Have to include Jim Johnson, 49er HOF CB played in sixties thru seventies. Was so good, they hardly ever threw at him. And when they did, it was very rarely a completion. Many fans around the league did not even know who he was. And it took too long for him to get in the HOF. Opposing players and coaches sure knew him.

It's hard to shut down receivers completely in the NFL..The rules really don't allow it. You did see Revis give TO a hard time by jamming him at the line. The thing about Darelle is he big enough to muscle the big receivers and quick enough to man up all of them..A unique combination..and he is a great tackler and hitter ,something Dion was certainly not.
