Sanchez Not Approached By Jets For Restructure

There has been a rumor saying that the New York Jets have approached quarterback Mark Sanchez about restructuring his contract.  Sanchez was given a contract extension in March 2012 guaranteeing his 2013 salary of $8.25 million and leaving the team with a huge cap hit if the Jets were to release him.

The Jets Blog reported the team has already reached out to Mark Sanchez to restructure his deal.  There has been speculation that the Jets would try and lessen Sanchez’ 2013 cap hit by converting portion of his salary to signing bonus to spread it over the life of his contract.

JetNation has obtained information from Mark Sanchez agent, and older brother, Nick Sanchez saying the Jets have not approached Mark for a contract restructure.

There's no way to confirm either source though.  Anyone can make a screenshot to look like it came from anyone these days.

That text message came from Nick Sanchez.  We verified that.  We are saying source as to not reveal who the text was sent to.  But it was sent from Nick Sanchez.

Sorry, I'm still skeptical.  Was your source the same one that Manish uses? :winking0001:

Breaking News: Jets to Hire Gamble

January 5th, 2013 1:17 pm

Brian Bassett , theJetsBlog.com

NOTE: Updated finances of deal.

After just under a week, the Jets look close to securing a deal with their new general manager, Tom Gamble.

A source with knowledge of Jets contracts told TheJetsBlog Saturday that the deal for the current Director of Player Personnel in San Francisco looks to be around three years with an option clause for a fourth and could be worth in the neighborhood of $2-3 million per year over the deal’s duration.  Gamble is in the New York area today meeting with the Jets and has already cancelled his next interview which was set with the Jaguars.

While the announcement might not come for a few days, the wheels are apparently moving and the Jets seem set on getting Tom Gamble in as their guy to run the personnel side of the team.  Gamble was the Jets top choice coming into the process and the Jets current head coach likely appreciates the type of team that Gamble has helped Trent Baalke to build in San Francisco.  Ryan and Gamble also have personal history from their days where their fathers worked together for the Eagles in Philadelphia.  Even so, there were rumors early on that Gamble would want to bring Niners Defensive Line Coach Jim Tomsula with him wherever he landed.  No word yet on Ryan’s status.

UPDATED 2:55PM: Of course, there is the important question as to whether or not the Jets have adhered to the Rooney Rule, which states that every team must interview a minority candidate for head coaching and general manager openings.  Jets reporters are starting to publicly write that the team has not made any definite decisions about Gamble, but in breach of the Rooney Rule requirement, what else are they supposed to say?  As of right now, the New York Post reports that Marc Ross is scheduled to interview with the Jets on Monday.  If we are right about Gamble though, it remains to be seen whether or not Ross will participate in a cursory request to fulfill the requirement for the Jets.  Any announcement about Gamble might not come until after the Wildcard weekend and their minority interviews are cleared up.  That said, we are sticking by our story in the absence of the Jets hiring anyone else.

Note: I don’t normally break these things, so while I am 99% sure this is happening, stay tuned. More as we know it …

But now that this is out in the mediasphere it's not that important whether he was approached or not. The million dollar question is does Sanchez want to do something to help the JETS or not.

I would welcome Nick Sanchez's input on that question.

Well now that we printed his text message I am pretty sure we won't have the chance to ask him, lol.

Even if it is Mark's brother, he'd have a lot of reasons to deny the report even if it was true. Especially if the offer was insulting, or they're not interested in doing anything that might help the Jets.

Right now the only reason Sanchez would be inclined to give up any guaranteed money would be to get out of town.

Even as beloved as he is by the fan base I still don’t think he will be giving up any money to stay in NY

The New York Post reports the Jets have not approached Mark Sanchez about restructuring his contract:

That's because Sanchez — whose 2013 base salary is fully guaranteed — has no
incentive to, and any restructure would have to involve extending the
Jets' guaranteed commitment to Sanchez beyond next season. Sanchez's
$8.25 million 2013 salary is immovable, and should ensure the Jets can't
afford viable competition for a QB whose play sunk to embarrassing,
comical depths in 2012. Feb 12 - 5:13 PM

Also, I know there was some talk of this, but the Jets have not asked Mark Sanchez to restructure his contract, per source. #nyj

I don't see any of this as a story. It is an option if they have a specific signing they want to make and feel strongly about or to lower his salary to trade him.  It makes sense to move some of the Sanchez money to 2014 in those circumstances.  If it's not needed for what they feel is an important piece, just take your lumps.
