TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneersannounced Friday afternoon they have traded cornerback Eric Wright to the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional pick in 2013.

Signed as a free agent last year, Wright had a rocky first season with the Bucs. He missed part of the offseason program while dealing with an undisclosed medical condition and was suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

After last season, Wright agreed to a restructured contract that included a large pay cut and seemed to clear the way for him to stay with the Bucs.

But Tampa Bay apparently had other ideas. The departure of Wright likely clears the way for rookie Johnthan Banks to start opposite Darrelle Revis.

Bucs offensive lineman Donald Penn voiced his displeasure with the trade on Twitter:

Man! Schiano is a tough MF'n control freak. This move sickens me. Again "the rich getting richer" The NFC West is starting to look like the AL East. Yankees/Red Sox = Niners/Seahawks and we're the Mets. At one time some very good talent only to be destroyed by a terrible owner/GM

Well so much for that, huh?

TAMPA, Fla. -- The trade of Eric Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the San Francisco 49ers was voided Monday, after the cornerback failed a physical, San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said.

His rights reverted to the Buccaneers, who are in the process of releasing him, a league source said.

There did not necessarily have to be anything physically wrong with Wright for the 49ers to reject him and scuttle the deal.

Wright had fallen out of favor with Bucs general manager Mark Dominick and coach Greg Schiano after he was charged with misdemeanor suspicion of driving under the influence in Los Angeles on July 12.

The 49ers had agreed last week to give the Bucs a conditional late-round selection in 2014 in exchange for Wright.

He also served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances last season.
