Durant says Kristaps Porzingis unique for skill in age of athleticism

NEW YORK -- Kevin Durant lauded the talent of Kristaps Porzingis on Monday, calling the Knicks rookie an NBA "unicorn" because of his combination of size and skill.

"When they made the pick, I texted [Knicks head coach Derek Fisher] immediately and said 'I like this kid, he can play.' A lot of people were down on him, but he can play. He's a skilled guy and I think we've gotten away from enjoying skilled players in this league. We get so many players that are athletic and big and strong, but he's a skilled player."

The Thunder are in New York taking on the Knicks on Tuesday. The Thunder played the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, falling 116-106.

Porzingis was drafted fourth overall in June, and his selection was met with heavy criticism.

But the 7-foot-3 Latvian has made a significant impact, drawing raves not just about his impressive athleticism -- his putback dunks make routine appearances on SportsCenter -- but also his refined overall game.

"He can shoot, he can make the right plays, he can defend, he's a 7-footer that can shoot all the way out to the 3-point line," Durant said. "That's rare. And block shots -- that's like a unicorn in this league."

The Thunder played the Knicks in November, losing 93-90 as Durant sat with a hamstring strain. Porzingis scored just seven points in the win.

Durant, who is listed at 6-foot-9 but is much closer to 7 feet, is viewed as one of the most unique players in league history, with his remarkable handling and shooting ability for a player of his size. So his appreciation for Porzingis' game should come as no surprise.

Porzingis fever has swept the NBA, with the Knicks big man coming in fourth -- one spot ahead of Durant -- in jersey sales numbers that were released last week.

"You've got to respect what he's doing," Durant said. "This being New York City, everything is under a microscope, but he's progressing at a high rate pretty fast, and he's gonna be a force."

Fantastic article by Woj on how KP became a Knick:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/the-unlikely-story-of-how-kristaps-porzingis-found-his-way-to-the-knicks-072828935.html

Here are some good excerpts, the first about Orlando desperate to get him, having wanted to draft him in 2014:

After Porzingis' pro day workout in Las Vegas this June – a public workout for all 30 NBA teams – Hennigan felt empty walking out of the gymnasium. This time, Orlando had the fifth pick in the 2015 draft. And he believed his chances of getting Porzingis had evaporated. "He won't get past four," Hennigan told friends on his way out of the workout.

Too much had happened in a year, too much had changed. Miller had come to understand it, too. Miller had gone to visit Porzingis and prospect Willy Hernangomez in the Spanish ACB League in February and found himself sitting in a restaurant with his two clients. As the players stood up, Miller became incredulous with the sight and wondered to his European agent partner, Guillermo Bermejo: "How am I going to get Gomez drafted high? He's 6-foot-7!"

"What the hell are you talking about?" Bermejo replied. "He's 6-10."

Miller responded, "He's five inches shorter than Porzingis. How can he be 6-10?"

Bermejo shook his head.

"Yeah, Porzingis is 7-3 now!"

Here about how he and his agent Andy Miller wanted no part of Philly:

Whatever happened, Miller didn't make it easy for Philadelphia to draft Porzingis at No. 3. The Sixers wouldn't be afforded Porzingis' physical, nor get a private workout, nor even a face-to-face meeting. After most of the pro day executives cleared out of the gym in Vegas in mid-June, 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie lingered to meet with Miller. Hinkie stopped him in the lobby area and asked Miller about a chance to sit down and visit with Porzingis.

"You said that I would get a meeting with him here," Hinkie told Miller.

"I said, 'I'd try,' and it's not going to work out, Sam," Miller responded.

An awkward silence lingered, the GM and agent, standing and staring. The Porzingis camp wanted no part of the Sixers' situation at No 3. Miller couldn't stop Philadelphia from drafting Porzingis, but he could limit the information they had to make a decision. And did. No physical. No meeting. No workout. The Sixers passed on Porzingis on draft night, clearing the way for the Knicks to select him.

Also, make sure you watch the "Evolution of Porzingis" videos in the story.  Straight KP Porn

I really hate that Donnie Walsh was judged on a curve because the Isiah era was such a sh*t show.  Walsh did what anyone could do in dumping salary and giving up 1st rounders to do it.

I bring this up because with Curry coming to MSG the media keeps bringing up that Curry could've been a Knick but was drafted by GSW at 7.  That was a monumental blunder by Walsh in everyway imaginable, compounded by the idiotic pick of Jordan Hill when there were other PG prospects available.  If Walsh was so high on Curry, don't just sit there and wait for Curry to fall to you at 8.  Minny Kahn had two picks at 5 and 6.  You telling me that Walsh couldn't make a deal with Minny for the 5th pick?  A good GM does that in order to get the player they want.  It happens all the time in the NFL.

Three-for-three.  KP the Rookie of the Month for January in Eastern Conference.  If this was like MLB with ROY in each league KP would be a shoe in, but Towns is going to win it.  He's been great.  The only thing that might hurt Towns is that Minny is awful again.

It's kind of bullsh*t that white guy bias doesn't hold for Europeans. If Porzingis from Latvia were Blake Paisley from Duke, Towns doesn't even get mentioned in this discussion.

Yeah, Kris Porter would have easily gone 1st overall.

That was a bad Nuggets team 9-16 on the road before the game.  But, somehow, the writers haven't put heat on Fisher yet.  Mind boggling.

Besides the backcourt issues, Fisher is the biggest negative on the team.

They didn't look prepared or they looked uninterested in playing. Triangle is not the best offense for this team either.

Because the team isn't very good.  Fisher is getting one more season until he's fired.
