You don't go "all in" without a good core of players or you end up with one or two playoff wins over a couple years and then back to 2 wins and square one. And no, one or two playoff wins isn't worth it even if it has been a while. The attempt is being made to build a competitive roster that will last beyond a few big FA signings coming and going and the expectation every year will be playoffs. Will it work? Who knows. But I do think it's a good way to build a franchise, and not just a team that may get a few playoff wins before going back to a dumpster fire. The Rams went after a Veteran QB, veteran DE, Veteran WR and picked up a retired safety. The Jets went after a veteran WR, veteran DE, veteran QB, Veteran RT. The No. 1 draft pick by Joe Douglas was replaced by a FA LT who is likely to start at LT for a few years. Every NFL team is all in every year. It's not about getting better. It's getting better than everyone else. The Jets on the margin haven't begun to get better than they were 2 years ago. When you compare where we were 2 years ago to where the Pats, Bills and Dolphins were the Jets are falling behind.

The program is what lasts over time. I like the Program Saleh is building but the average player career is three years or less and if the Jets aren't spending to the cap every year they are underfunding the roster

The Rams mortgaged their future, built a roster and then got the QB and won the SB. The Bucs did something very similar, but in their case they did not have to trade for the QB-they signed him. I like what the Bucs did better. Well...kind of yes, kind of no. The "yes" rationalization was only insofar as it happened that way unintentionally. First they drafted Bradford Then tried building around Bradford. Then they traded Bradford away to hopefully catch lightning in a bottle with Foles (and didn't). Then they traded 2+ years' worth of picks for a chance to draft Jared Goff. Then they tried building around him. Then they went to a SB and lost. Then they extended Goff. Then they got sick of Goff. Then they traded Goff (and his massive contract), and a pair of 1st rounders, for Stafford (who was then viewed as a stronger-armed Kirk Cousins: a career loser who just puts up nice stats) Then they made a midseason trade for Miller and picked up OBJ. Then they won the Super Bowl. The Rams' franchise's actual plan was to draft a QB and then build around him. Twice. They just abandoned that plan when the opportunity presented itself. Good for them; it was pretty ballsy, and most of the time these "reeks of desperation" moves don't pan out.
