PantyHose&Furs Posted May 3, 2006 Share Posted May 3, 2006 Been thinking a bit about how the Jets are going to win games next year and it looks like we're going to be a ball-control, grind it out team offensively that's going to rely upon defense and special teams to win. That said, we know Mangini comes from the best defensive-scheming tree in the game so let's hope he improves our ability to stay in games defensively. We know we just upgraded our O-line and hopefully we'll be able to control the ball a bit more and keep the defense fresh, etc...but what I just realized is that we're going to be a fantastic special teams unit. Graham = excellent punter Nugent = good to very good PK (ended the year very consistent) Miller = excellent return man; dangerous every time he touches it Brad Smith/Cotchery = upgrade from last year in the punt return game. Can Smith be our Randell-El? Westhoff - one of the best in the biz We can stay in the game with defense and specials and in the NFL and close games...specials can make the difference. Your thoughts? More than anything, you have to play mistake free, turn-over free, ball. thus, the players that were drafted: Heady, game tested, up fopr a challenge. It is a good approach and forndation to have. If you look at the Jets draft strategy they seemed to focus on wild boar containment. Maybe Mangini knows something we don't. I personally am willing to wipe the slate clean. Granted he was terrible holding on to the ball last year. But I think it was a combination of being a rookie and partly because of the learning curve associated with catching Graham's punts in practice. Eventually his confidence suffered. How the hell can you say Nuggie is a "good to very good" kicker? He was 1/64 on touchbacks with more kicks going out-of-bounds than through the end zone. He is O-for his career on 50+ FG's. And his only chance to win a game, his FG came up short. He is mediocre at best and the Jets wasted a 2nd round pick on something like that. His 53 yarder barely came up short in a cold night where he admitted he misjudged the weather. Blow me Tx. Touchbacks do not define a kicker. I don't care if you think a 1st or 2nd round kicker should be great from the start, because that's just stupid. Nugent was the best Collegiate kicker and he will turn into one of the best in the NFL. He missed his first long field goal, whooptie do. It's not like it was the AFC Championship Game. Nugent will be fine. Worry about your kicker from Memphis. In fact, he was downright automatic on all but 50 yarders as the season wore on. He'll be better year 2. Also, time will tell if taking a kicker in round 2 was a waste...most games in the NFL are decided by 3 pts or less. If Nugent can continue to be consistent and get more leg strength he'll be a weapon. Combining him with Graham and a dynamic returner like Miller and you can have a formidable unit. Miller fumbled on punts, not kickoffs...and as he gains experience and patience he will too evolve into a weapon. winning field position and winning the turnover battle are huge...we have a good young core (graham notwithstanding)... The Jets have alot of capable returners on the roster now with Tim Dwight, Justin Miller, Jerricho Cotchery, Brad Smith and Leon Washington. If Derrick Blaylock is on this team,. He is a valuable asset as a lead blocker on kick returns. He was big time in KC in this area leading the way for Dante Hall and we saw Blaylock's talents in this area againts Buffalo late last year. The Jets signed a few guys who can contribute nicely on specials like a Matt Chatham. They are also expected to get back two very good special teams players in Darrell McClover and Andre Maddox. To me, solid coverage starts wiyth the guys you have on the edges, running downfield. You need to force the returner inside, whre there is a crowd, and the chances of gaining any significant yardage is greatly minimized. We do have some horses who can ahndle this. So I guess coverage may improve. I like Dwight on punt returns. Sure handed, intelligent, and solid speed. Long time since we had that combination back there. Vinatieri is the unquestioned best kicker in the nfl (by most people) and Nugent kick every bit as good as him in his rookie season. If Nugent becomes the next Vinatieri you will still make fun of the Jets for picking him in the 2nd rd (over which solid player btw?)) Put a sock in it patsy!
