Brett Favre thought the idea of playing for the New York Jets was tantamount to finishing his career purgatory. He figured he'd rather retire.

Now the soon-to-be-former Green Bay Packers quarterback has warmed up to the idea, and a source within the Jets front office tells ESPN.com they believe they're not an afterthought anymore in the Favre sweepstakes.

Favre's agent, Bus Cook, told the Sporting News that the Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers "are the two teams out front" and that he expects "something to happen within the next 48 hours."

The Jets went 4-12 last year and looked miserable doing it. Thankfully, they're in the Miami Dolphins' division or they would have looked worse. It's no wonder why Favre refused to speak directly with the Jets over the past few weeks.

But once Favre accepted the fact the Packers would not release him or trade him within the division, a trade he couldn't completely orchestrate became inevitable. He got on the phone and spoke with the Jets and Buccaneers.

Although the Buccaneers appear to have the inside track, the Jets wedged into the fight Tuesday night by convincing him they're ready to win immediately.

The Jets explained how much money they spent in free agency to shore up their offensive line and pass rush. They filled him in on the $75 million facility in Florham Park, N.J., they'll occupy on Sept. 2. They reminded him there are places to go hunting in the area -- and that's no trivial matter to the proud Mississippian.

The Jets are disappointed that neither Chad Pennington nor Kellen Clemens has stepped up in training camp to claim the job. Both returning quarterbacks have been decent, but the front office and coach Eric Mangini would feel much more comfortable with a charismatic veteran at the helm.

They believe they're a playoff team and that Favre would give them a chance to win it all. Yes, the Super Bowl.

Favre will turn 39 in October. Every one of his 5,377 completions has been to a Packers receiver.

Still, the Jets are confident Favre can learn enough of the offense to be effective if they can bring him in by the end of this week. The Jets open their preseason Thursday night in Cleveland, so if Favre can be waiting when they return to Hofstra University, they think he would have time to learn enough of the offense.

Favre would have help translating the playbook. Bill Callahan, the Jets' offensive line coach and top Mangini assistant, knows the West Coast offense from his Oakland Raiders days (Callahan was Jon Gruden's offensive coordinator before succeeding him) and could help Favre assimilate the play calls into concepts he understands.

The improbable might actually happen after all.

Taken from NFLUK.com. Not sure how reliable these guys are TBH.

The Brett Favre saga is about to end with the NFL icon in pewter.

BUCPOWER.COM has learned that Favre will not stand in the way of a trade from Green Bay to Tampa Bay and the deal is likely to be finalized within 24 hours.

The chances of the trade unraveling are remote and Favre has indicated to the Bucs directly that he is willing to change teams after 16 years of growing his legend in Green Bay.

The Packers, unwilling to deal the 3-time league MVP to an NFC North rival, view the Bucs as a compromise in this ugly impasse. The Bucs view Favre as an upgrade on QB Jeff Garcia, who made the Pro Bowl in 2007 while leading Tampa Bay to an NFC South title.

Once it became clear to Favre that he wasn’t welcome back in Green Bay, he became more flexible in terms of accepting a trade to clubs outside the division. The Bucs have been interested in Favre since last month, when he announced he wanted to play again.

The Bucs could make the trade announcement official by Wednesday, but Favre will have little time to learn Coach Jon Gruden’s complex system because the Bucs open the regular season Sept. 7 at division rival New Orleans.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that a “bidding war” has emerged for Favre’s services. The candidates are the Jets and the Bucs.

It’s not clear whether the bidding war relates to what the Packers will get for Favre, to what Favre will be paid, or both.

Also, G.M. Ted Thompson’s weekly press conference, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. EDT, has been postponed.

As to those who believe that the Jets or Bucs might then try to flip Favre to the Vikings, keep in mind what we pointed out on July 15. Any trade of Favre by the Packers will likely include a term that dramatically increases the compensation if Favre is re-traded.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello declined at the time to comment on whether such a tactic would be permitted. But many other trades have been done with conditional terms relating to things that might happen in the future.

Ok? What does that mean?

Who knows what it means. Apparently though its a tug of war between the Jets & Bucs right now. Favre could be heading home to pack his bags for either Tampa or New York. Infact, thats my personal feeling as to why he is returning home. This has got to end in the next 24-48 hours, you would think. Both teams would want him learning the team and playbook enough to play in AT LEAST the final two Preseason Games.

The plane trip to NY was never accurate as it was not Erik Boland, the poster who posted it first led us in the wrong direction.

And kobe, Hattiesburg is in Mississippi. His hometown.

Everyone is talking out their ass like Favre already is holding a Tampa uniform.

I'm not giving up on this season, we need Favre more than Tampa.
