Inside the Jets Salary Cap and Contract Issues (Final 8 \ Uncapped Year Details)

Nice article.

The FA situation seems pretty depressing. Coupe that with the fact the Jets only have 4 draft picks means it will be very difficult to improve the team with new players.

Seems like their best bet is to come up with some very creative contracts for Revis, Mangold, D-Brick, and Harris, to insure the young core of good players the Jets have will be intact for 5 or so years.

If the NFL cap, and CBA return with stability, 2012 should be an excellent FA year of the players that had their team rights extended in the final contract year.

My biggest concern isn't the FA market, but the Jets not having a lot of picks in what looks to be one of the best drafts in years. This draft isn't just strong, its strong in positions that the Jets need. God how I wish Mangini was still running the Browns.

I bet Denver wishes they didn't trade this year's first for the Seahawks second round pick last year. Denver got Alphonso Smith, who did nothing, and now the Seahawks have the 14th pick in a loaded first round.

I could not agree more and I think New England has a ton of picks no?

NE has 9.

first round own (22)

second round jax (42 or 44), Tenn (47 or 48) own (53)

third round - none

fourth round own

fifth round denvers

sixth round own

seventh round phil and own

New also has Oakland's 2011 which gives NE the flexibility to use either that pick or own 2011 pick to move up in the draft to pretty much what ever spot they want.

All the more opportunities for Belichick to draft crappy players.

So you hope Sheppard is signed and overpaid by likes of a Raiders or Redskins.

That gives the Jets at least one potential solid FA.

So we have the first two rounds and one good signing to fill the CB, Slot WR and 3rd down edge rushing specialist voids.

Sounds as if Rhodes is staying so lets get that out of our heads...

Would also need to resign Leon, Edwards, Richardson and Hartsock.

I'm confident they will work out long term deals for Mangold, Revis, D'brick and Harris.

So, thinking that they have 1 decent FA signing and the first two picks to make any real difference to the roster next year:

Sign: Domenik Hixon WR

Draft with the first two picks:

CB: Cox, Ghee, Robinson, Jackson or Wilson, Spievey, Thompson, Franks, DBrown

and an

OLB/DE: Graham Hughes, VMiller, Sapp, Dunlap, Morgan, Willi Young, Misi, Houston, Selvie

...in whatever order works

The Saints didn't resign him. It was basically considered a FA signing. Total BS though, they basically found a loop hole.

They could do the same with Sheppard if they wanted to...if they wanted to...

that is BS! and the NFL couldn't give us a compensory pick for that?

The rules say that the final 8 teams won't be able to sign a FA until they lose one. Don't most of the good FAs go in the first few days? I doubt the final 8 teams will really have a chance at any of the top FAs. The only top FA from last year that I can remember lasting long was Ray Lewis and even he admitted that he was never really going to leave the Ravens.

The thing that seems to get lost with the uncapped year FA rules is that there's a lot fewer decent FA's out there this year, anyway. The jump from four to six years for UFA is huge. It wipes over 200 potential FA's off the board immediately - all the youngest ones, too, the kind you'd want the team to go after.

After teams are done RFA tendering, they have an additional tag they can place on their UFA's. In the past, it's been one franchise or one transition tag. This year, it's one franchise and one transition tag, or two transitions. It'll be interesting to see how many teams opt to use these tags in an uncapped year. I'd think the wealthier franchises would be pretty generous with them.

So for all the teams without restrictions, it's not like there's going to be a free agent bonanza this year. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Where I hope the Jets are really doing a lot of investigative work is at the bottom of this year's draft class. With their FA limitations, and so few draft picks, they need to pull the best undrafted free agent class in history.

the restrictions may be a good thing

it may force tanny to trade down and get more picks, and to scratch his spending itch on signing core players to long term deals

I wouldn't mind that, either.

The RFA rules are helping the Jets more than they're hurting them. Without them, they'd have to make long term decisions on Leon and Braylon right now. Instead, they can see what they look like during the season and extend them then. I think you'll see a lot more contracts around the league done during the 2010 season than you normally do. Teams will look to knock at least a portion of those signing bonuses off in the uncapped year. Players with leverage will look to get language paying them in the event of a lockout in theirs.
