A review of the Jets' depth chart

With the NFL labor dispute reportedly in its final stages, the lockout could be lifted as soon as Friday -- and you know what that means. It'll be madness, with free-agent signings, rookie signings, trades, etc.

As a refresher, here's an updated depth chart (our version), based on the roster posted on NewYorkJets.com. Unrestricted free agents are in caps, rookies in italics.

Some quick observations: Obviously, the big story is wide receiver, where the Jets have three key free agents. Potentially, they also face significant turnover in the secondary. They're thin on the offensive line and linebacker, areas that could be targeted with undrafted free agents.

So here you go, a complete depth chart. Chances are, it's going to look a lot different in about 10 days.

Interesting to sit back and really look at everything besides just the obvious discussion points (i.e., WRs). While RT is obviously a big question, depth on the OL overall definitely needs to be addressed, as Turner is pretty much the only capable backup the Jets have on the roster. Even if Vlad is capable of starting, they need another tackle in the fold who they trust to play. The rest of these guy's careers to date have pretty much just been camp fodder.

The DL for the Jets may be in the best shape it's been in in years now if these rookies work out. I'd like to see them bring Ellis back to cover their asses, but beyond that they're in pretty damn good shape there. Safety is an f'n disaster; the Jets have a player coming off a major injury, a converted CB and a former camp cut who got picked up out of desperation late in the season. That said, there's a solid chance that the Jets bring back multiple of Pool, Smith and Ihedigbo, although it would still be a position that could use upgrading.

Should also be interesting to see if they resign Folk/Weatherford or bring in some alternative options to compete with Novak/Conley, as I can't imagine them handing the job to either guy. That said, the Jets are clearly fans of Conley, as this is now the third consecutive year they're bringing him back to compete in camp, and I remember last year it being said (on Hard Knocks maybe?) how much of an issue consistency is for punters early in their NFL careers and it takes a lot of these guys a few years to get past that, which seemed to be the mark against him. That said, I'd still like for them to bring Weatherford back in this competition, just in case. He's certainly had his own consistency issues, but the fact is that punting in the NFL has just gotten so bad, and the guy is actually better than a lot of people in the league and better than anything the Jets have had at punter in a long time. Graham was alright, but do we really need to forget the endless stream of sh*t this team had before him? I'd rather not repeat that.

Can't recall who had it, but someone quoted a "personnel guy" as saying that if the salary cap is (as projected) around $120M, that a bunch of teams are going to dump a lot of salary to get ready for the free agency period.

Point being, there's no way to predict the final roster of any team right now. Big names are going to shake free during the three-day window.

Yeah, his inclusion of FA players is odd. He lists FAs as if they will be back, but ignores guys cut for salary reasons that they may well bring back, such as Woody and Hartsock.

Any reason that you prefer MacIntyre to the other FAs, like Cody Brown? I'm not so sure that they will be keeping Satele and Mauga unless at least one is a beast on specials.

One thing I disagree with is your analysis of the safety situation. You have them keeping the 3 coverage safeties and then expect a 4th "free safety for coverage"? I don't see it. Ihedigbo is great on specials and I see them bringing him back. Especially if they let Smith walk. Lowery has also played there and at safety he certainly fits the coverage side better. Consider the success they had employing Smith at LB in the playoffs. I think they will want at least another banger at safety and none of that crew comes close to fitting the bill.

Agreed. Keep Clemens over that d!ck.

You can keep trying, but that ship sailed last year. They sure don't seem to agree with you. If you like Clemens you should hope there is a team out there that still likes him because the Jets evidently aren't very fond of him.

Satele and not Westerman!??!? Westerman was ilb i thought.

Bit has Westerman making it at OLB. His first season they worked him at ILB, but I think they were trying him at OLB last year. I heard he was banged up, but I didn't see him do much in 2010. It's time for him to put up or he's gone. As I said before, I'd be a little surprised at Satele and Mauga. If they keep 4 ILBs I feel there is a good chance one is strictly a special teamer.

Brunell is broke hes also bankrupt. Cut him.

Yes, well that was the joke. Brunell filed for bankruptcy because he lost some $25M more than he had on a real estate deal.

Make sure you actually get a joke first before you decide to find alleged holes in it. I learned this the first day in Message Board Smart-assing 101.

i just dont think Cody brown is any good. Prove me wrong cody.

I'm not so sure that they will be keeping Satele and Mauga unless at least one is a beast on specials.

I think Satele has real defense potential and Mauga is gonna be the ST guy. Laury won't be back so they both play specials.

Ihedigbo is great on specials and I see them bringing him back. Especially if they let Smith walk.

possibly but the price would have to be right. there are about a million SS Undrafted rookies out there... you could be right about bringing him back tho.

I think Ihedigbo is one of the low end guys that comes back. I don't see price being a factor because I think he's a vet minimum guy (or close to it) regardless. That's not to say if some UDFA comes in and lights it up out of the gate he won't be able to take his job, but given the short time frame we're working under for that to happen, not to mention Ihedigbo's knowledge of the playbook and special team's abilities, I don't really see that happening. Under different circumstances I probably wouldn't feel so confident it would happen, but given the Jets safety situation and this very limited offseason, I think they've got to bring at least one or two of those guys back. Frankly, I was surprised he had even already accrued enough seasons to be an UFA, time sure does fly.

Only way I see Ihedigbo gone is if Jets keep Pool (likely since he's the closest thing they have to a coverage safety) and choose Smith over Ihedigbo based on his late-season play, with that last spot being saved for a UFA.

Oh my ******* god, can we seriously stop dealing with this sh*t in every single thread? I don't give a crap how much you don't like each other on the board or in real life, take it somewhere else. If you need to bitch at each other in the lounge that's one thing, but stop polluting every single football thread with it.

That seems pretty legit, but there might be a little more room than you think. Granted, making a roster as a fringe FA or UDFA is going to that much more difficult than usual this year for any team, but consider that of the guys you listed there's a number of players who are no lock to make the roster. Just at a quick glance, I'd say guys like Patrick Turner, Jarron Gilbert, Josh Mauga and Emmanuel Cook could certainly lose out on their roster spots if they don't earn them in camp, with their main advantage being familiarity with the coaching staff and system. On top of that, both Shaun Ellis and James Ihedigbo are still UFAs, and there's no guarantee of their return. Not to say that there isn't a very good chance that the roster could turn out exactly as you predicted, but if there's a guy who proves himself enough in TC to overcome the lack of offseason, there's certainly room that can be made for him.

They seem to love Cumberland and Mulligan can block a bit so I think they could stand pat at that position.

JonE's projection is pretty good, but a couple of comments. Too many safeties. I don't know if they'll bring 'dig back, but if they do Cook will likely be gone. Maybe Morgan? Guy will have to play specials. I think that Lowery will get some run at safety. Did anybody hear where they were trying him? I was surprised they didn't sign Donovan Warren. They had him around most of the year working from CB to S, but when they needed a body they went for Fitzhugh and then Cook. maybe they didn't like him much. I think MTV makes the squad at NT. They had him active against the Steelers and it may take Kenrick some time to be ready. I think another LB for specials will probably make it - Satele and/or your TBD or one of the LBs picked up during futures time in February.

I agree. I don't see any problem with the TE position. Keller is a solid receiver. They carried Cumberland all last season for a reason, so I assume that he will get a shot. Mulligan was active and played in better than 10 games last year. I think they liked him plenty. I assume he will take Hartsock's role. It would be nice to add a quality all-rounder, but Boss will COST and is just an adequate blocker. They have two receiving TEs already, I can't see adding another. More likely a practice squad level bruiser.

I didn't go to camp much last year but when I was there Cumberland looked terrible. Can't wait to see him producing!
