Cowboys could be limited by injuries to secondary in season opener at Jets

The Jets kick off the 2011-12 season Sunday evening at 8:20 p.m. at the newly named MetLife Stadium. The following is a sampling of pieces from around the web on the Jets' Week 1 opponent, the Dallas Cowboys.

Charean Williams and Carlos Mendez, Fort Worth Star-Telegram: The Cowboys secondary might be significantly debilitated Sunday night. And if not so, it will certainly be rusty. No. 1 cornerback Terence Newman has been off the field since Aug. 4 with a groin injury and missed practice Monday. Coach Jason Garrett says he must practice to play. Mike Jenkins, the Cowboys' other starting cornerback, has missed time since Aug. 1 with a shoulder stinger. He seems more likely to play than Newman.

Brandon George, Dallas Morning News: Phil Costa, entering his first season as the Cowboys' starting center, has missed the past two weeks with a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee. Costa said he is "feeling pretty good" now and expects to return to practice Wednesday.

Charean Williams, Star-Telegram: Costa is emblematic of the rewriting process that has produced a revamped Cowboys offensive line during the preseason. Considering Costa's injury prognosis, the Cowboys will start three offensive linemen who have, combined, one NFL career start. Gone are Andre Gurode, Marc Colombo, Leonard Davis and Montrae Holland. Now in the starting lineup: Costa, rookie first-round pick Tyron Smith at right tackle and fellow rookie Bill Nagy at left guard. The Jets will surely blitz often to challenge the untested group.

Calvin Watkins, ESPN.com: As the Cowboys have retooled their roster, speculation has trickled out that Garrett has made roster moves with the aim of keeping players on their toes. Accountability issues among players reportedly were to blame, in part, for the Cowboys' poor start under former coach Wade Phillips last season.

Tom Orsborn, Houston Chronicle: The Cowboys defense is another example of the change the team has undergone. The unit allowed a franchise-worst 436 points last season. This season, the Cowboys will stay in a 3-4 formation but change it's scheme. If their defense looks a lot like the Jets' Sunday night it's because their coordinator looks much like the Jets coach. Rob Ryan, Rex's brother, will begin his tenure as Cowboys defensive coordinator Sunday night after being lured during the offseason from the Oakland Raiders.

NFL.com: The Cowboys will use strong-footed Dan Buehler to kick off Sunday night but rely on Dan Bailey, a rookie from Oklahoma State, to handle field goals and extra points.

Perfect! That means Schitty will call for a run-heavy offense.

The Cowboys will never be expecting that!

Well in theory that would now be the predictable thing to do... lol

I say Rex uses the 'Ask madden" feature in Madden 06'... that crushes Shotty all day!

Really? Earth to Tom Orsborn, Ryan last coached the Raiders D in 2008. Way to do your homework.

I would call a run heavy offense based on those blurbs. First of all, I'd always use a run heavy offense to protect the D. Second, more important than Dallas having a banged up secondary, they have a banged up/inexperienced offensive line. Play it close to the vest and don't let the Cowboys gain a yard. Let the Cowboys new offense be accountable for getting Romo killed.

On a related note, 49ers lure away Harbaugh from the Ravens!

The way sh*tty has called games in the past, Holmes, Burress, Mason and Keller don't even have to show up until halfway through the 3rd quarter. Jets were one of the worst scoring teams in the NFL in the 1st quarter. Every first drive seemed to consist of moving the ball a bit until a 3 runs and out.

New this year-running wide is now LEGAL! Shockingly to a Schottenheimer, when you run the ball you can now run outside the tackles, and not only on reverses that take 45 minutes to develop.

Know people poormouth Sanchez, but he only is allowed to throw the ball after the jets get down ijn the 2nd half.may be his completion and INT percentages would be better if you passed when you didn't ahve to do so out of desperation.

Ha! I dont hate Schotty as much as others...but I do agree this is when he tends to baffle you. Horrible run defense, lets pass. Horrible pass defense, lets run.

That said, Cowboys have one of the worst secondaries in the league and with Newman out, we should have a field day cuz he's the only player in the secondary worth a damn.
