Braylon sues Michigan resturant for slander

While 49ers receiver Braylon Edwards was looking for a job after his contract with the Jets expired, two members of his entourage found themselves accused of knifing and/or forking two employees at a restaurant in Michigan.

Though initial reports cleared Edwards of any involvement, the restaurant issued a statement implicating the former Wolverine: “Braylon Edwards was present and involved, but it’s an ongoing police investigation so at this time we don’t have any further information.”

Edwards never was charged, but now Edwards is taking action. According to the Associated Press, Edwards has sued the restaurant and three of its employees for slander, claiming that the false allegations prompted an unnamed team that had offered him a contract with $15 million guaranteed to acquire a case of cold feet in response to the contention that Edwards had a role in the incident.

Ordinarily, defamation cases are difficult for folks with a history of bad behavior, since the measure of damages comes from comparing the reputation before the false statements to the reputation after the false statements. That’s probably why, for example, Pacman Jones never made good on a threat to sue ESPN for claiming that he instigated another shooting in a Vegas strip club.

In this case, Edwards may be onto something. If he can prove that there was a team who had offered that money, that the team pulled the offer after the restaurant claimed that Edwards “was present and involved” in the incident, and that the allegation was false, Edwards could prevail.

The challenge, of course, will be to squeeze the $14 million out of the restaurant and its employees. Maybe, in the end, he’ll simply own the restaurant.

And maybe Pacman Jones can instigate a shooting there.

Here's my official litmus test for stupid NFL players: Do you have a 'crew'? An 'entourage'? Congratulations, you're stupid.

You get max 5 or 10million until you break something. Then you never work again.

So you're spending these few precious years' income dragging these mouth-breathers around with you? Guess your fake degree didn't require a math class.

Liberace once sued a guy for accusing him of being gay. And won.

LOL.

As PFT mentions, Braylon might actually have a case. The key is the specific offer. If there was in fact no offer then it would be tough to prove, but with the offer out there there is a chance he can win.

Not the smartest thing to do (tweeting abt the incident) but he might have a case.

The problem with this case is getting the team that "offered" $15 million to first admit that and then to get them to admit they pulled the offer due to the restaurant incident. No team is going to go on record with that statement. The company line will be that we were still evaluating what we wanted to do and the market for receivers changed with the signing of x player for x amount.

Braylon Edwards claims a bar cost him a $15 million contract

By MJD

braylon_edwards_claims_a_bar_cost_him_a_million_contract.jpgWide receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) is playing this year for a contract that guarantees him just $1 million, which doesn't sound like such a bad thing.

He claims, though, that one team was ready to give him $15 million guaranteed, but backed out after a bar in Birmingham, Mich., made what were, according to Edwards, "false, misleading, and/or negligent statements."

The statements at issue are these, from myFOXDetroit.com back in early August:

Sunday, Edwards was allegedly at the South Bar in Birmingham. Reportedly two people in his entourage were arrested after roughing up some employees around two o'clock in the morning.

We're told the group of friends Edwards was with got into an argument with an employee at the nighttime hot spot that eventually spilled into the kitchen. There one worker was sliced with a knife requiring 14 stitches. Another was attacked with a fork.

Thankfully, at least everyone was able to avoid a spork attack. Here's a different version of what happened, according to the lawsuit, via the AP:

Edwards was attending a class reunion at the restaurant, was seated in the VIP section and "paid a South employee consideration for increased security and privacy."

Patrons at a nearby table began harassing Edwards and his group, and that restaurant employees "swarmed the area" and confronted men at his table, according to the lawsuit.

Edwards said he was directed out of the restaurant through a rear door, but was blocked by an employee wielding a broom handle. Edwards said the man rushed him, causing both to fall to the floor.

The next day, he received text messages indicating that unless he paid that employee and two other South workers "they would go to the press and file a complaint with police," the suit says
.

Knives, forks, broom handles ... I'd just like to applaud everyone involved for not having a gun. I think that's our silver lining here.

I also hope the lawsuit proceeds at least to the point where we find out what NFL team was going to offer Braylon Edwards $15 million guaranteed. It might be worth it to that team to step in and help the bar out financially, so they can settle this dispute, and save the team that embarrassment of that knowledge becoming public.

Edwards also got popped for a DUI this offseason. He caught three balls for 27 yards in the 49ers season opener.

This sounds like a scene out of Anchorman.
