Who Are These Jets?

Well that was awful.

That pretty much sums up this past Sunday’s debacle against the Oakland Raiders. There’s really no need to go over the details.

But the question lingers. It is the same question I had about this team going into the season – Is this team really ready to take the next step and be dominant?

Unfortunately, and I hope like hell I am wrong, more and more the answer appears to be “no.”

I’ve had this sneaking suspicion for about six to eight months now, pretty much ever since the Jets lost the AFC Championship Game, that 2011 would be a disappointing season.

Don’t ask me why. I just haven’t been able to convince myself that this Jets team is ready to be champion. So far this season, I haven’t seen anything to convince myself otherwise.

In week one the Jets needed to pull off a miracle comeback to beat a very ordinary Dallas Cowboys team at home. In week two the Jets put on about the least impressive blow out win I think I’ve ever seen in my life over the Jacksonville Jaguars. And in week three, well, let’s not re-live the nightmare in the Black Hole.

If you asked me three or four months ago what I thought the Jets were going to do this year I would have told you the following:

I think the Jets are going to have a disappointing 8-8 or 9-7 season and most likely miss the playoffs. I think Mark Sanchez will show significant improvement over the course of the season but I think the defense will take a step back and the running game may not be as dynamic and they will lose some games they have no business losing and thus not take that last step to the Super Bowl – at least not this year.

I then would have told you that this outcome may turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to this team in the long run.

A disappointing season will make the Jets focus on and address the weaknesses of their roster that desperately need to be addressed to really become a dominant force like the lack of depth on the offensive line, the deficiencies we have at safety and the lack of speed we have at outside linebacker.

In addition, the disappointing season will force Rex to address what few weaknesses he has as a head coach and tweak his approach as needed to ensure such a thing won’t happen again.

Then, in 2012, watch the hell out! This team will come out like gangbusters and blaze a path of heartache en route to the first of several Super Bowl titles.

Then again, maybe the Jets just needed one really bad game where they couldn’t pull off a miracle in order to wake them up and start playing like they are capable.

We will know a lot more about this team in two weeks, after tough road games at the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots. Hopefully what we know is that I don’t know what the hell I am talking about and that the 2011 Jets are the real deal.

Here’s to hoping the Jets prove me wrong.

It's just the way I feel this year Terry, my love.

I felt like this last year. I'm not so sure about the loving Terry part, but still... It takes so much more than just having a good team to win it all that I felt the Jets would probably have a down year before they got over the hump. It often seems to happen that way. Injuries hit and the Jets have been lucky in that regard for quite some time. I don't think there is any reason to expect them to take a step back, even after that debacle Sunday, but I wouldn't be shocked.

Like I said in the column, it's not any particular thing. It's just a feeling. Something feels off about this year.

In 1999, going into the season I was stoked. I was certain the season was merely a formality, before Vinny went down of course.

There's just this nagging feeling that this year will be a bit of a backslide.

While the article is well written it speaks more about a "same ole jets fan" than our team.

week 1 miracle win.......rather than embrace the fact that we are actually good enough to pull one off, lets call it $hit luck

week 2 most lacluster blowout ever......... need I say more about the sojf?

week 3 nightmare in black hole........... I still enjoyed watching this game to the very end. The difference this year to pre Rex Ryan years is that I thought we would pull out a win right to the very end.

Will we reach the superbowl? who knows but I still like our chances as much as any other team in the league right now. I am confident we will right this ship & when we do look out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever been accused of this.

The Jets are a team who's been to consecutive AFC Championship games, a team who put together an outstanding 4th quarter comeback against a 2-1 Dallas Cowboys team during week one, physically manhandled the Jacksonville Jaguars during week two, and lost a tough game against the Raiders, on the road in Oakland, inside the black hole.

That's who the Jets are.

We're also a team who's yet to put it all together. Mangold's banged up, Hunter has played horrible, our offensive line has been awful, our ground and pound has been non-existent, our defense hasn't performed up to it's capabilities thus far, etc, etc, but once this Jets team of 2011 puts it all together? The league will take note, and the Jets will challenge the elite teams for home field advantage throughout coming out of the AFC.

Who are the Jets?

A team who's focused on going 3-1 by beating the Ravens in Baltimore this week.

Woman's intuition, huh?

Don't feel too bad. The Pats defense is a broken levy and by season end Gillette Stadium will be flooded with tears.

Max, reinstate POTW noms & make this one the winner or risk me relinquishing my membership.

I don't think we're a bad team. I just don't think we're a SB team... yet.

fair enough then. please name the AFC super bowl bound teams..........the way I see it we have just as good a chance at turning things around than any other AFC team right now. there are chinks in every teams armor right now. Jets have the most upside in player personnel improvement right now cause many facets are playin bad.

I do noit see us as an elite team -- nor did I the last 2 seasons -- I have my doubts but after every loss I do that's my SOFJ routine

Rex usually bounces back which has never happened too much from coaches past -- Will root like Hell Sunday night - I still say 10-6 maybe 11-5

we lose one we shoulda won win one we shoulda lost -- Thats the Jets for you -- besdes we owe the Raven a beating -- have we ever beaten them since they became the Ravens this should be motivation enough

Hah

That is called being the ultimate optimist- so many aspects of the team playing bad due for a turnaround
