Gastineau Lives
Jets are a 'joke' because... why again? Because they have so many criminals on the team? No. Because they spent a 4th round pick on Tebow as a backup QB after he led his team to the 2nd round of the playoffs the year prior? But let me get this straight: Denver wasn't a joke for spending a 1st on him when he was coming out of college (before that run he had with them)? Because of this regime's record of 34-30, or 38-32 if you include the 6 playoff games? Or is it just because of last year's record of 6-10 which put them as the 9th worst team in the league for just one season? Or they're a 'glorified expansion team' because they lost Landry, Bell (meh), Pouha (who barely played last year), Revis (who didn't play), DeVito, Keller (who barely played) and Moore? Eh, whatever. People are gonna believe what they want to, just gotta focus on getting this team back to the success they had in the first two years of the regime. Jets need to trade down because they 'have so many holes', but the 8 teams above them don't? Buffalo doesn't have more holes? Then why have they finished behind us every year for the past 4 years - hell, they haven't made the playoffs in 13+ years. We've made it at least 6-7 times in that same time frame. Exactly. This is my favorite post in a while. The media promotes the circus idea as an angle from which to write and then comments on its own creation. T0mShane
Reading Twitter just now, it's pretty clear that the Jets really, really, really want to draft Austin. IMO, nice smoke job by Idzik.

The team has been a circus for four years, but nobody cared for the first two years because it worked. They were a train wreck in 2011, and a corpse in 2012. Holmes, buttfumble, Sanchez, feet porn, Rex, tattoos, Hill, etc, etc. They'll be called a circus until Idzik makes them not a circus.

Yeah, but what is the circus aspect of the team now? Trading the 16 million dollar cornerback? Are we still on Rex' foot fetish? Does the next team he go to in whatever capacity inherit the circus status? Sanchez sucks but he's not a circus (just a clown on the field)

A smokescreen is supposed to be subtle. You aren't supposed to scream it out loud. Right now the Jets are yelling from the mountaintop that they want this guy. Maybe it's an anti-smokescreen: make it so obvious you want him that no one will actually believe that you really do.

My wild conjecture is that it's somewhere between the Jets actually being high on him and also sending out signals to the San Francisco type trade up candidates that they're a threat to take him if they don't like whatever is being offered. bitonti
So what would you do with Austin, use him as a weapon out of the backfield? What to do with Tavon Austin: Bubble screens Slant routes tricky routes (multiple changes like Santonio runs) Back shoulder throws Motion out of backfield Kick and Punt Returns Reverses/End Arounds Basically the list of what you can't do with him is shorter. You can't put him in the Z position and make him get off the jam against the #1 CB. You can't run a fade route and jump ball in the corner of the endzone. The Crusher
even if the jets have no one to throw him the ball, just having him on the field would be a huge boost. The other team would have to account for him on every play. They don't have anyone like that right now. Direct snap FTW.

#27TheDominator
So you can use him as a hybrid WR/RB type basically? On the Rams board they were comparing him to Terry Metcalf. They seemed to think this was a negative because I guess there were some fumbling issues for the older Metcalf. IMO that type of player is more valuable now than back in the 70's because of the way defenses play (or aren't allowed to play) now.

BroadwayJoe12
So what would you do with Austin, use him as a weapon out of the backfield? You do everything to get the ball in the kids hands, period. He'll be like Cob and take the occasional handoff out of the backfield; while he's too slight to be subjugated to that on a consistent basis (not a knock against him as there's not a single WR who could withstand that) it provides matchup problems where you have to find him on every play. I'm standing by my Mingo and Austin picks, but I may have to reverse them if he's this hot of a commodity.
Kleckineau
If idzik takes Austin at 9 or even 13 he instantly becomes Tannenbaum 2.0 A flea sized slot receiver for a team that doesn't even have a QB? Really? Makes a lot of sense if you want to invest heavily in this midget for the sole purpose of getting him killed with Sanchez's off target, behind the receiver slant passes. This is the type pick the Bills specialize in.

Obviously trading down is ideal but I would take those 2 if we can't.

I don't put much stock in that type of thing but 7 is such a ridiculously low score. At that point you have to be worried about him walking into walls, falling out of bed or accidentally drinking rat poison.

I read it was a 6, but it's a moot point as the wonderlic has zero correlation to NFL success; for example, AJ Green scored a 10. While yes, they are one step up from brushing their teeth with rocks, it's not as if they just suddenly became stupid, they've been dealing with stupid their entire football career and it hasn't effected him. By all accounts he's a hard worker and wants to be great; that'll get him through the playbook well enough.

I don't know how bad you think Tannenbaum is, but if he folds up under pressure from the fans and media and doesn't draft a playmaker solely because we don't have a good QB he should pack up and go back to East Butt**** where he came from. He should pick the best players. In my experience, the BIlls draft a lot of sh*tty QBs.
