Willie Colon: Jets no longer 'circus'

By Rich Cimini | ESPN.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Without Tim Tebow, it's a lot quieter around the New York Jets than last season. And that's a good thing, according to veteran guard Willie Colon.

Colon arrived in town just as Tebow was leaving, but the native New Yorker -- a former longtime member of the Pittsburgh Steelers -- watched from afar as one of his hometown teams became immersed, and perhaps distracted, by the Tebow phenomenon.

Colon came from the organization known for its understated approach. The Jets were anything but, especially with Tebow for one, ill-fated season."They care about winning and they care about being a better franchise, and not being a circus group," Colon told the Pittsburgh media Wednesday on a conference call. "I think having the Tim Tebow circus out of here, and having different things that were kind of holding this team back, are starting to go out the window. I think we're all starting to care about football and only football, which is a good sight to see."

The Jets finally admitted the Tebow mistake last April, when new general manager John Idzik, trying to change the franchise culture, released the QB after the draft.

One month earlier, Colon had signed a one-year contract after being released by the Steelers. Pittsburgh (0-4) faces the surprising Jets (3-2) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Colon immediately sensed that intangibles were lacking in the locker room.

"I came here with the attitude that this team was missing a lot," said Colon, who has emerged as a team leader. "They were missing chemistry and they were missing that fight and belief in one another."

The perception of the Jets is starting to change, especially after their upset of the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. Many experts predicted the Jets would win only four or five games, but they're in a second-place tie with the Miami Dolphins in the AFC East, only one game behind the New England Patriots.

Steelers wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, a former longtime Jet, said he's not surprised by the fast start.

"I've said all along that coach (Rex) Ryan is a very good coach," he told the New York media. "People are getting to see it, that's just it. He can coach his tail off and that's why you see the team play the way it's playing. He knows how to motivate guys. He just know how to tap into whatever a guy has, getting them to respond."

Colon has contributed at right guard, replacing the venerable Brandon Moore, who retired. He has galvanized a line that includes two former Pro Bowlers, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold.

"Coming here, Nick and Brick, those guys aren't necessarily maulers," Colon said. "Those guys are technicians that do their job well and do it at a high level. When I came here, I had an opportunity to kind of bring that spark, to not have a back-down mentality, to let them know that, 'Hey, we don't have to take crap from nobody.' Those guys are starting to buy into it and it's working out so far."

Asked to comment on his former team, Colon said, "I see a desperate team." He expects them to be motivated Sunday.

Crotchety wasn't so pleasant when he first got cut loose.

Why wouldn't he be?  He was one of the best WR's in Jets history and all of a sudden he was the # 4 or 5 receiver for the Steelers making about the veteran minimum.  I think that his bad case of drops his final year here were more due to Sanchez than him.  Sure-handed guys don't just suddenly become erratic unless perhaps they had a bunch of concussions or another (undisclosed) injury.  Who knows, maybe if we could have kept him around for Geno he'd be a capable possession receiver for him.

The thing that you can take from this was that he never took issue with Rex over the breakup, which I think is pretty cool.  Jerricho remains a class act.

Cotchery is not top 10 in terms of all time Jet receivers.

Not in terms of talent but in production you bet he is.

6th in catches, 8th in yards, 13th in TD's, 7th in games played.  And he wasn't getting throws from Namath, Ken O'Brien, or Testaverde either.

12.6 YPC and 18 TDs does not get you endorsements.

He compiled in a pass happy league.

Nice player, not an all-time great. Even on this franchise.

He also "compiled" while playing in the worst years of Pennington and 2 years with Sanchez.  I'm not saying he was ever a SPECIAL receiver but there's value to move-the-chains guys.  It's why Wayne Chrebet was such a fan favorite for so many years.  If you aren't a burner at WR, being dependable is the next best thing.  How exactly was he supposed to have more than 12.6 ypc when Pennington couldn't throw 15 yard patterns and Sanchez couldn't throw at all?

What 10 guys are you taking over Cotchery?

I liked Cotch and thought he was a solid player for this team, but let's not forget what really happened.  He threw a fit because the Jets signed Burress to start over him and demanded to be released because he refused to be the Jets #3 WR, as he clearly expected to move back up to #2 after Braylon left.  After he was a FA, it turned out the best he could do was being the #5 for the Steelers (although he's moved up their depth chart over the subsequent years).  The only point being, as good as most of his time went here, the ending was ugly, and that was Cotchery's doing.

Sauer, Maynard, Toon, K Johnson, W Chrebet, Caster, Barkum, Walker, L Coles, S Moss, R Moore. Not in that order.

Heck, I would even put the hated S Holmes before Cotchery.

Nice player, but let's not go overboard.

So you have him as the 13th best Jet WR.  Pretty close to Top 10.  It's more of an indictment of how little talent we've had at WR over the years, I suppose.

Cotchery had a bad last season with the Jets and he was injured. The following season he saw the wheels coming off above him and wanted out...rightfully so.

If he had a good QB his early years, he would have been a consistent 80 catch 1000 yard player.
