kelly
Jets Quarterbacks Navigated a Rocky Road Posted 16 hours ago Eric AllenSr. Reporter/Director, Internet ProgrammingEmail @eallenjets On the Inside Three QBs Started in 2016, Hackenberg Had a Redshirt Season Last Season Review After directing an offense that set a franchise mark with 5.925 yards in 2015, veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick re-signed with the Jets in July and was on the field for the team’s first training camp practice. Expectations were high for Fitzpatrick and the offense considering he set personnel bests with 3,905 passing yards and 31 TD passes while leading the team to 10 wins in his first season with the Green & White. Following a one-point loss at home to the Bengals in Week 1, Fitzpatrick threw for 374 yards in a Thursday night game at Buffalo as the Jets totaled 493 yards and 37 points in an impressive victory. But things took a dramatic turn in Kansas City 10 days later. In a 24-3 loss to the Chiefs, Fitzpatrick was intercepted six times and soon one of his favorite targets — WR Eric Decker — would head to injured reserve with a partially torn rotator cuff. The Jets went on a four-game losing streak and an ineffective Fitzpatrick was replaced by backup Geno Smith in the fourth quarter of a Week 6 loss at Arizona. Between Weeks 3 and 6, Fitzpatrick was intercepted 10 times and he had two touchdown passes as the Jets offense failed to find any rhythm.Smith got the call in Week 7 against Baltimore, but his season ended when he suffered an ACL tear in the second quarter. Fitzpatrick came on in relief, guiding the Jets to a 24-16 win over the Ravens followed up by a 31-28 triumph over the Browns. The Jets suffered a gut-wrenching defeat to the Dolphins at the season’s midway point as Bryce Pettysaw some work when Fitzpatrick went down with a knee injury. The latter was ruled out against the Rams and Petty made his first career start in a 9-6 loss.Following their Week 11 bye, the Jets went back to Fitzpatrick for a pair of games. Petty replaced him in the second half of a Monday Night loss to the Colts and then Todd Bowles announced that his plan was to start Petty the final quarter of the season. VIEW GALLERY | 115 Photos Position Review: Quarterbacks Petty displayed moxie in leading New York’s AFC representative to a comeback win over the 49ers, but he was forced to leave the next two games early. The second-year passer, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, suffered a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder against the Patriots and he finished the season on injured reserve. Fitzpatrick, Petty and Smith combined to complete 56.5% of their passes with 16 TDs and 25 INTs while being sacked 35 times. The Jets finished No. 27 in passing (216.6 yards per game) and No. 30 in scoring (17.2 points per game).Looking Ahead Smith has an expiring contract and Fitzpatrick’s deal will reportedly void before the League Year. Both Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, a second-round pick who had redshirt season as a rookie, are under contract.“There’s nothing wrong with Christian. He just needs to play,” Bowles said of Hackenberg. “Like I said when we signed him in the offseason, Fitzpatrick had a great year last year. Geno was coming back strong as his number two and Bryce was making progress as the number three. So he was allowed to have a redshirt year. Next year, he has to show some progress and make the same jumps.” After making his first four professional starts, Petty is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.“With Bryce going forward, I’m not necessarily going to speculate on what his ceiling may be,” said GM Mike Maccagnan. “I think Bryce has a lot of potential. When it’s all said and done, it’s really up to Bryce to determine what player he’s going to eventually develop into. I do think he has the physical ability to potentially develop into a starter. It’s really how he progresses and develops, so that’s kind of up to him." The NFL’s league year commences on March 9 and then the NFL Draft will follow the weekend of April 27-29. The Jets’ QB plan will come to light in the weeks and months ahead. “That’s something we’ll talk about upstairs,” Bowles said at his season-ending news conference. “We have a lot of questions that we have to answer ourselves before we can tell you guys.” > http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/article-7/Jets-Quarterbacks-Navigated-a-Rocky-Road/c78f33a4-8e49-4c8e-9f83-5b8e0952889f

kelly
As Ryan Fitzpatrick's contract voids, the Jets can reflect on a painful lesson 7:00 AM ET Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment To say it's the end of an era is a bit much, but it's definitely the end of something. Something that was wonderful for a year, but went horribly wrong after that. Per the terms of his agreement with the New York Jets, Ryan Fitzpatrick's contract automatically voids five days after the Super Bowl ... and that means Friday. Fitzpatrick's two-year run with the team is over and, as the quarterback acknowledged late in the season, there's virtually no chance of him re-signing. So what's the major takeaway from Fitzpatrick's time with the Jets? First and foremost, you'd like to think the team learned a hard lesson about negotiations and the importance of team-building in the offseason. The Jets weren't wrong for wanting to re-sign Fitzpatrick, a free agent after the 2015 season. After all, he won 10 games in 2015 and set the franchise record with 31 touchdown passes in his first season with the team. No, their mistake was how they handled the negotiations.Instead of drawing a line in the sand, giving him a take-it-or-leave-it offer, the Jets let it drag out through free agency ... through the draft ... through minicamp ... all the way to the eve of training camp. It bordered on ridiculous because the Jets wanted him, he wanted them and there was no third-party threat -- i.e., a team interested in Fitzpatrick or another quarterback that interested the Jets. Fitzpatrick versus the Jets became a huge distraction, one of the biggest stories in the NFL. It swallowed up the team, causing unrest in the locker room. At one point, receivers Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall reportedly skipped a few voluntary workouts as a show of support for Fitzpatrick. The offseason matters, even for an old pro like Fitzpatrick. It's all about building chemistry in the locker room, in the weight room and on the field.I remember something Bill Parcells said back in 1999. Vinny Testaverde was coming off after a brilliant year and was planning to spend the offseason at his home in Tampa, Florida, where he trained in a state-of-the-art fitness room on his property. Parcells demanded that he work out with the team, claiming it was important for the Jets' leader to be among his teammates. The quarterback relented. As it turned out, Testaverde, the part-owner of an aviation company, used a private jet to commute twice a week to Long Island. But he participated with his teammates. Fitzpatrick, unhappy with the Jets' low-ball offer (three years, $24 million), stayed away. The Jets went through the entire offseason without their leader. They could've ended it in March by offering the same deal he wound up taking in July -- one year, $12 million -- but they let it turn into a battle of egos.I think coach Todd Bowles, a big believer in team chemistry, underestimated the impact of not having Fitzpatrick around. (Full disclosure: I did, but I don't get paid to run the team.) It also created an awkward dynamic. For five months, the Jets pretended Geno Smith was their starter, only to "demote" him the minute Fitzpatrick walked through the door on the eve of training camp. It was unfair to Smith. The Jets let one player become bigger than the team. Do you think Parcells, or even Bill Belichick, would've allowed that to happen? No way. They would've told Fitzpatrick to take a hike in April, turning to Plan B. In this case, it might have been someone like Brian Hoyer.Presumably, general manager Mike Maccagnan learned something from the drawn-out soap opera: Don't let yourself be held hostage by a player. Was the contract stalemate the reason for Fitzpatrick's terrible season? It's impossible to say, but it created a weird vibe around the team. When he started throwing interceptions, it put the team in a tough spot. A quick hook would've sent a mixed message, considering they held his spot for the entire offseason. As it turned out, he threw the Jets out of the season, with 17 interceptions in 11 starts. Fitzpatrick finished with a 69.6 passer rating, 18 points below the NFL average. Based on that premise, it was the fourth-worst quarterback season in team history (post-merger). A diminished Joe Namath was 23.7 below the average in 1976; Kellen Clemens was 20 below in 2007; and Mark Sanchez was 18.2 below in 2009. Clemens and Sanchez had an excuse; they were first-time starters. Fitzpatrick did a lot of good things. He galvanized the team in the aftermath of the Smith/IK Enemkpali fiasco; he energized the fan base in 2015 and provided more leadership than people outside the locker room can appreciate. But his legacy will be the contract dispute, which hurt him and his team. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/66851/as-ryan-fitzpatricks-contract-voids-the-jets-can-reflect-on-a-painful-lesson
rangerous
i think cimini just rewrote a post i made not too long ago about how signing fitz so late after geno was the one going to all of the ota's was a huge problem. in hindsight, fitz should have been told to take a hike back in march but there were too many good things from 2015 that compelled the jets to keep trying. but even though the fitz signing caused chaos in the locker room bowles needed to put his foot down and tell these clowns to stfu. kelly
The Ryan Fitzpatrick Era was never supposed to happen for the Jets, and it certainly never was expected to last two roller-coaster seasons. In the end, though, it was a wild ride that rescued a franchise in one of its darkest moments before leading it back into the darkness again. For better or for worse, the Fitzpatrick Era officially ended on Friday when the contract that the 34-year-old quarterback signed last summer automatically voided. All that's left is a $5 million cap hit the Jets must endure during the 2017 season. And memories - more than a few good ones, and plenty of bad. So was it worth it? That all depends on your perspective, how much your sights are set on the Jets' long-term future, and how much you value all the fun that was had in 2015 during the Jets' near-playoff-miss.But first, remember this: When the Jets traded with the Houston Texans for Fitzpatrick in May, 2015, the idea was that he'd compete with young Geno Smith for the starting job. No one envisioned him as the long-term solution, and the Jets probably didn't even want him as a starter. They felt the immature, turnover-prone Smith needed a veteran to push him to get his career on track. But then came the punch heard 'round the NFL, when Smith and I.K. Enemkapali got into an argument and the latter broke Smith's jaw. That was mid-August of 2015, and the Jets were fortunate at that point to have a veteran like Fitzpatrick ready to step in.And not only did he step in, but he thrived. He had his finest season in the NFL - 3,905 yards, 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He wasn't perfect or even good enough to be considered among the NFL's elite quarterbacks, but with two receivers having fantastic seasons by his side (Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker) and backed by a fantastic defense, Fitpatrick created "FitzMagic" and the Jets went 10-6. It didn't end until his meltdown in Buffalo on the final day of the regular season when he completed just 43.2 percent of his passes for 181 yards and threw three interceptions against ex-Jet coach Rex Ryan's defense and the Jets lost 22-17 and missed the playoffs. And from that moment on, really, the Jets were stuck. The prudent move for the franchise was to realize the fluky nature of 2015, to push ahead with their rebuild and to turn their team over to a younger quarterback of the future. But the fans were teased by 10-6. The players were energized by it. Maybe even ownership bought into it. There was a feeling that maybe the Jets could keep it together for one more season and make a little bit of a run. So they had to bring Fitzpatrick back. They just handled that all wrong. The Jets understandably played hardball with Fitzpatrick, refusing to commit long-term money to a quarterback they knew wasn't part of their future. But instead of moving on when he declined, they stood pat and left themselves in a no-win position as training camp approached. The Jets had no other options at quarterback. They weren't going to turn back to Smith, and they obviously had no intention of riding with second-round rookie Christian Hackenberg. They needed Fitzpatrick as much as he needed them. But by then they had let the entire offseason go to waste. Was that the reason Fitzpatrick regressed and the Jets got off to such a slow start? He certainly seemed to think so. Whatever the reason, it all fell apart in 2016 and Fitzpatrick landed back on the bench. And once he did, the Jets still didn't have their quarterback of the future. They went back to Smith, who got injured, and then Bryce Petty, who struggled, while inevitably returning to Fitzpatrick twice while Hackenberg stayed off the field. The Jets ended up enduring a miserable 5-11 season with their trajectory pointing down, not up. And now, the rebuilding begins, perhaps one year too late. The lessons from the Fitzpatrick Era aren't clear-cut either. From the moment he arrived through the first 16 weeks of the 2015 regular season, it was an unqualified success that exceeded expectations. They needed him desperately that first season. But in Year 2, the first year ended up looking like a big tease.Maybe that was unavoidable. The Jets were right to trade for him to push Smith. They were right to play him when Smith got hurt, and they were right to keep playing him once he got hot. They were even right to bring him back for 2016, even though they made critical mistakes along the way. In the end, though, Fitzpatrick's second season was a huge setback for the franchise. Their fall from the sugar-high of 2015 was steep and the hole they're in now is a deep one. Only now are they even beginning the process of climbing their way back out. > https://www.sny.tv/jets/news/the-fitzpatrick-era-has-come-to-an-end/215682746
kelly
What will John Morton do to address Jets' QB problems ? Question, via email, from Ira in Staten Island : Bowles was really in a tough spot with finding coaches to complete his staff, because of the Jets' lack of talent in important positions. Hope John Morton does well as offensive coordinator, but the quarterbacks coach was an important hire. And Jeremy Bates has been out of the game for four years. David Lee was a quarterbacks coach I thought they should have gone after. But once again, coaches seem to hire their friends instead of the best available. Thoughts? Answer : It falls on Morton to fix the Jets' floundering offense. And while we can analyze his upcoming challenges to death, it comes down to one thing, above all else — developing a quarterback. If the Jets and Morton can do that, and find themselves a consistent starter at the position, their offense will be in pretty good shape. Yes, Morton and Bates do know each other from coaching at Southern California. I think Bates was a reasonable hire. He did some very good things in Denver, but hasn't done a ton since 2008. So I understand the skepticism. Lee is a more experienced quarterbacks coach. But it's not like he's an elite coach. (The Jets weren't going to attract this type of coach, as you alluded to.) Tyrod Taylor was all right at times under Lee last year in Buffalo, but Taylor finished just 18th in the NFL in quarterback rating. rest of above article : > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2017/02/jets_mailbag_darrelle_revis_ryan_fitzpatrick_chris.html#incart_river_index

kelly
The Jets have been linked to a lot of quarterbacks so far this offseason. The likes of Matt Barkley, Jay Cutler, Colin Kaepernick and many more have been mentioned as potential options for Gang Green. However, there are some quarterback options that are just not that likely in reality. Let’s take a look at who those QBs are and why they probably won’t be rocking the Green and White in 2017. JIMMY GAROPPOLO Jimmy Garoppolo is a hot commodity and rightfully so.He displayed some promise while starting in the absence of Tom Brady and is young, so there are plenty of reasons why the Patriots are demanding a first round pick for Garoppolo. However, the chances of Bill Belichick trading him within the division where he’ll have to see him twice a year are slim to none. Jimmy to the Jets? Not happening. ROBERT GRIFFIN III RGIII might be on his last legs in regards to being a starting quarterback in the NFL.His inconsistent play and issues with being able to stay healthy have plagued his once promising career. The Jets probably shouldn’t even go after Griffin for that reason alone. They need a steady quarterback for at least another year before they can turn the reigns over to Christian Hackenberg or whoever they see as the future at the position at that point in time. When you look deeper, you’ll realize that the West coast offense that offensive coordinator John Morton will be running isn’t right for Griffin’s game, as he is better off in a spread where he can use his legs and sling the ball around. The Jets should stay away from this one. BLAKE BORTLES With a new regime running things down in Jacksonville, could the Jaguars look to move on from Blake Bortles and go with their own guy? It’s a possibility, but it almost certainly won’t happen this season. There are no real clear-cut answers at quarterback in this year’s draft, so Bortles should get at least one more year to show that he still has what got him drafted at No. 3 overall. The chances of the Jaguars trading Bortles are basically 0 percent, but would the Jets really be interested in bringing in another young, turnover-prone quarterback? > http://jetswire.usatoday.com/2017/02/27/unlikely-quarterback-options-for-the-jets-in-2017/

kelly
Why Geno Smith's phone is blowing up with calls from Jets' teammates Geno Smith is looking for a job and free agency is fast approaching, so it came as no surprise he did a television interview to update prospective employers on his surgically repaired knee and mental outlook. Smith wants NFL teams to know his knee "feels great," that he should be ready for training camp and that he's willing to be a backup. News flash: No team will offer him a starting job after two years of riding the bench, which followed two turnover-laden seasons. In a sitdown with the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Smith was asked if he could return to the New York Jets. He didn't sound all that enthusiastic about the prospect of re-signing with the team that drafted him in 2013. "We'll see," he said. "Honestly, I wouldn't say that's out of the question. All options are on the table. I have a lot of great relationships in that organization, in that community that I've built the last four years. Guys on that team that I love, that would love to ... that I'd love to play with, they call me all the time: 'Hey, G, what's going on?' Unfortunately, I can't give them that answer right now."As you may have heard, the Jets need an experienced quarterback. They haven't ruled out Smith, but it sounds like he's only a fallback option at this point. There's some concern about his knee and his rehab timetable; they believe he may not be ready until September. He blew out his ACL in Week 7. Ironically, the Jets probably could offer the clearest path to a starting job, but it sounds like he wants to shop around. Who can blame him? He faced constant adversity in New York, much of it self-induced, and he probably is seeking a change of scenery.Smith said he's OK with being a backup, quickly adding, "That's not my goal. I don't see myself as that. I was brought into this league -- I was brought to the Jets -- to be a certain caliber of player. Being injured for two years has kind of taken that away from me. My mistakes were shown on the field my first two years and me getting better has kind of been behind the scenes. "I believe I can be one of the best," he added. "I've shown that in glimpses. What I've been searching for is consistency. I think that consistency will allow me to be that great player that I always see myself being." > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/67160/why-geno-smiths-phone-is-blowing-up-with-calls-from-jets-teammates
kelly
hmmm.. ~ ~ Report: Kirk Cousins would accept a trade only to the 49ers Posted by Mike Florio on February 28, 2017, 7:16 AM EST Getty Images As Washington closes in on the deadline for deciding whether to apply the franchise tag for a second straight year to quarterback Kirk Cousins, the tag-and-trade option continues to percolate. If Washington goes that route, however, it won’t have many options. John Keim of ESPN.com reports that Cousins would accept a trade only to the 49ers. It’s a match that flows clearly and obviously from the dot-connecting process sparked by former Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s emergence as the presumed successor to Chip Kelly in San Francisco. So why would Cousins be able to block a trade to any other team? While, in theory, any player under contract can be traded anywhere (absent a no-trade clause), no team is going to give Washington significant compensation for a one-year, $23.94 million deal that has no security for the new team beyond 2017. It therefore becomes critical for any trade talks to include contract negotiations, so that the team that acquires Cousins from Washington will have him under contract for multiple years. The real question, as posed here last week, is whether Cousins would take less than $53 million fully guaranteed over the first two years as part of a long-term deal with the 49ers. That amount, which reflects the 2017 tag and a 20-percent transition-tag raid for 2018, is what he’s believed to want in Washington in order to do a long-term deal. It’s unknown whether he’d give the 49ers a new-hometown discount in order to facilitate a trade. If Cousins won’t take less, would the 49ers plunk down that much plus send one or more draft picks to Washington to get a quarterback who will be able to run the Shanahan offense? It’s an issue that will be resolved, if anywhere, this week in Indianapolis as all teams gather there for the Scouting Combine. > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/02/28/report-kirk-cousins-would-accept-a-trade-only-to-the-49ers/
kelly
just an fyi.. ~ ~ Mayock: QBs in this draft not ready to play right away Posted by Zac Jackson on February 27, 2017, 9:35 PM EST Getty Images NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock did his annual pre-NFL Scouting Combine marathon conference call with reporters on Monday, and Mayock was asked lots of questions about the quarterbacks in this year’s draft class. Mayock isn’t much of a fan, at least not of their NFL readiness. “If you’re asking me whether the Jets should take a quarterback at No. 6, I would emphatically tell you no,” Mayock told one reporter, per the NFL Network’s official transcript. “As a matter of fact I don’t have a top 10 grade on any quarterback in this year’s draft, so I would not be in that conversation.” Earlier in the call, Mayock said he is “not bullish” on any of this year’s draftable quarterbacks because he doesn’t believe any of them are ready to play right away.“I’d love to have one of those kids in the second round,” he said. “Take my time, develop them. For different reasons, they’re not ready.” He said he still believes at least one quarterback — and maybe as many as three — will be drafted in the top 10 picks, but was adamant that he doesn’t rank them there.“I don’t have any quarterbacks anywhere near the top 10,” Mayock said. “That doesn’t mean I think there’s no talent there, because I think there are four quarterbacks that have first-round talent. In my order I had for my initial top five it was [DeShone] Kizer, [Deshaun] Watson, [Mitch] Trubisky, [Patrick] Mahomes. All four of them have holes in their games. The Jets don't have a QB, and neither of these guys will be available at their pick in round 2, so if either Watson or Trubisky is available at 6, I make the selection unless I have the believe that hackenberg is going to be my guy going forward . Then, I take Ramczyk at start him at LT.
kelly
Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment The last time the New York Jets went to the scouting combine with this much uncertainty at quarterback was 2009, when there was a three-month period between Brett Favre's departure and Mark Sanchez's arrival.Right now, the only two quarterbacks under contract are Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Translation: They need a starter. Speaking to reporters Thursday at the combine, coach Todd Bowles said both players will have an opportunity to compete for the No. 1 job."They'll have a chance," said Bowles, providing no explanation.Frankly, that sounds like lip service from a notoriously tight-lipped coach. It's hard to imagine Petty (four career starts) or Hackenberg (zero career snaps) as the opening-day starter, but Bowles wasn't about to tip his hand with free agency only a week away. Asked if he will sign a free agent, Bowles said, "We're looking into it. We have our eye on a few people." Mike Glennon, a pending free agent, is among the players on the Jets' radar. Tony Romo, Jay Cutler and Tyrod Taylor -- all currently under contract -- are expected to become available in the coming days. Out of that group, Taylor could pique the Jets' interest, although some league insiders wonder if the Jets would be willing to dole out a lucrative contract for him. Brian Hoyer and even Geno Smith could be cheaper, fallback options. Asked to describe the current state of his quarterback position, Bowles used the word "unproven." kelly
With NFL free agency approaching, several quarterback-needy teams will be scouring the market. And one signal-caller who could be available is Tyrod Taylor, if the Buffalo Bills opt to release him. If Buffalo does decide to part ways with Taylor, there are three teams in particular that have interest in the 27-year-old: the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets , according to Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News. Taylor signed a six-year, $90 million extension with the Bills last offseason, as they were prepared to make him the quarterback of the future. But after missing the playoffs for an 18th straight year, the team blew things up. The Bills relieved Rex Ryan from his head coaching duties and hired former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott to run the show. Taylor is coming off a season in which he accounted for 23 total touchdowns -- 17 passing, six rushing -- and only six interceptions. His 2015 stats nearly mirrored 2016.Kyle Shanahan is now the head coach in San Francisco, and he'll be searching for a quarterback to develop -- similar to what he did with Matt Ryan over the past two seasons in Atlanta. Kirk Cousins has been a popular name mentioned for the Niners, as Shanahan worked with the quarterback while serving as offensive coordinator in Washington from 2012-13. But the Redskins placed an exclusive franchise tag on Cousins on Tuesday, which will prevent teams from speaking with him unless they allow it. The Browns have been through an astonishing 27 different starting quarterbacks since 1999. While Taylor isn't a star at the position, he could help fill a void for the time being. Robert Griffin III didn't necessarily solidify the starting spot last season, and coach Hue Jackson may be ready to look elsewhere. As for the Jets, Taylor would be a young option for a team that has experienced turnover-heavy quarterback play in recent years. Ryan Fitzpatrick was third in the NFL with 17 interceptions in 2016. While he gets sacked a lot -- an NFL-high 42 times last year -- Taylor does a remarkable job of protecting the ball. He has just 12 interceptions in the past two seasons and only 15 total turnovers for his career. Taylor, who is coming off a groin injury, was recently medically cleared by doctors. That means the Bills could save themselves $30.75 million by choosing not to pick up his option and cutting him on or before March 11. -- Josiah Turner > http://www.espn.com/blog/nfl/rumors/post/_/id/31175/nfl-rumor-central-49ers-browns-jets-showing-interest-in-tyrod-taylor

kelly
-- Depending on what the Jets do in free agency and the NFL Draft at the quarterback position, it'll be interesting to see where Bryce Petty stands. Mike Maccagnan Jets takeaways from NFL Scouting Combine Petty was a fourth-round draft pick by the Jets in 2015, a year before they selected Christian Hackenberg in Round 2. If the Jets sign a veteran free agent quarterback, and happen to draft another quarterback with the sixth overall pick, then Petty is surely the odd man out. Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday, general manager Mike Maccagnan wouldn't commit to Petty or Hackenberg being on the Jets' roster in 2017, though Hackenberg surely will stick around. (Maccagnan typically doesn't commit to anything along these lines.) Maccagnan did say he is hopeful about Petty's progress, as he recovers from a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. Petty sustained the injury on Christmas Eve. "We're excited about both of them, to see how they perform this offseason," Maccagnan said of Petty and Hackenberg. "Bryce will be back, and I can't think of the exact date, but it's sometime, I think, in April. And he'll be able to start throwing again." Petty was fortunate that he didn't injure his throwing shoulder. Based on the timeline Maccagnan stated Friday, Petty should be able to participate in organized team activities.Petty saw his first NFL action last season, when he looked mostly unimpressive. He played in six games (with four starts) and had three touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 60.0 rating. > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2017/03/bryce_petty_christian_hackenberg_throw.html#incart_river_index
kelly
Three potential quarterback options for the New York Jets are off the market -- Mike Glennon, Brian Hoyer and Tyrod Taylor. What now ? Know this : The Jets won't break the bank because they want to leave themselves short- and long-term flexibility at the position, allowing Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg to remain in the picture for 2017/2018 and keeping open the possibility of drafting another quarterback. It's a smart position to take because none of the aforementioned quarterbacks are long-term answers. Neither are any of the players listed below, but they need to acquire a veteran, preferably an opening day starter-type. Here's how I'd handicap the field : Geno Smith, free agent: As I reported on Feb. 26, Smith isn't out of the picture just yet. Despite his issues in New York -- on and off the field -- Todd Bowles likes Smith's ability. The concern is whether his surgically repaired knee will be ready for training camp. Smith says yes; I'm not sure if the Jets share that view. He could be looking for a change of scenery, but this would be his best chance to start. Trevor Siemian, Broncos: He could be the odd-man out if the Broncos land Tony Romo. Siemian is young, inexpensive and has some upside (18 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 8-6 record), but he'd come with a price tag. The Broncos would demand a draft pick and/or player in a trade. The Jets want to build through the draft, so they're reluctant to trade picks. How about Sheldon Richardson? The Jets talked to the Broncos about Richardson before the trading deadline last fall. Chase Daniel, Eagles: They're reportedly open to trading Daniel, who has two years, $14 million left on his contract. He's 30 years old and has started only two games. Considering the financial commitment, would he really be an upgrade over what they have? Jay Cutler, Bears: He'll probably be released when Glennon's deal becomes official. His quarterback coach from Chicago and Denver, Jeremy Bates, was recently hired by the Jets, prompting observers to play connect the dots. I'd be surprised if this happens. I don't think everyone in the organization loves the idea of adding Cutler. Colin Kaepernick, free agent: New offensive coordinator John Morton overlapped with Kaepernick in San Francisco, so there's that. Otherwise, there's not much to get excited about. Josh McCown, free agent: He'd be a great mentor for Petty and Hackenberg, but he's 37 and probably doesn't have too many starts left. The Cowboys are showing interest. Matt Barkley, free agent: He's really a No. 2, but he played under Morton at USC. We're reaching here, folks. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/67348/geno-smith-remains-in-picture-as-jets-continue-qb-search
kelly
In April 2006, the New York Jets were so intrigued by Jay Cutler as a potential franchise quarterback that an entourage of decision-makers flew to Nashville to meet with the Vanderbilt star a couple of weeks before the draft. The group included owner Woody Johnson, who usually doesn't make scouting trips. They did the usual field/classroom testing and dined at a local steak house. Cutler ordered a New York strip. When it was their turn to pick, the Jets passed on Cutler, opting for D'Brickashaw Ferguson with the fourth overall choice. Months later, I heard they didn't come away from that meeting with a great feeling about Cutler. Here we are, 11 years later, and the Jets once again are mulling Cutler as a possibility. In fact, they've already talked to him about their quarterback vacancy. My advice : Take another pass. Cutler isn't right for the Jets, not in their current state. In case you haven't heard, they're rebuilding the roster, trying to add young talent while improving the culture in the locker room. Cutler wouldn't help on either front. He's almost 34, his body is breaking down after 11 years of punishment and his penchant for interceptions will land coach Todd Bowles among the ranks of the unemployed. Bowles needs a leader at quarterback, a strong hand who can handle adversity (there will be plenty) and galvanize a young roster. Cutler isn't that guy. Great arm, sour attitude. So why are the Jets interested ? For one thing, they're desperate. Tyrod Taylor, Mike Glennon and Brian Hoyer -- three names that were on their radar -- are spoken for. They want a veteran to augment the Christian Hackenberg-Bryce Petty tandem, and there's just not a lot out there. They see Cutler is a cost-effective option who can get them through a season -- until something better comes along. He'd be a one-year piñata. Some might argue Cutler is the best of a bad lot, but consider his cumulative league rankings from 2014 to 2016, per ESPN Stats & Information : Passer rating: 21st Total QBR: 25th Touchdown/interception ratio: 27th If Tony Romo lands with the Broncos, the Jets could try to trade for Trevor Siemian, who is young, inexpensive and not scarred. Problem is, they don't want to part with any draft picks. Plus, imagine the optic: General manager Mike Maccagnan trading for a seventh-round pick from the 2015 draft -- the same draft in which he chose Petty in the fourth round. The Jets are in a precarious situation, to say the least. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/67393/jay-cutler-to-jets-its-a-bad-fit-in-a-rebuilding-situation
kelly
What will the Jets do at quarterback? Posted by Mike Florio on March 9, 2017, 6:20 PM EST Getty Images Mike Glennon picked the Bears. Brian Hoyer picked the 49ers. So where are the Jets when it comes to the quarterback position ? With Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg the only options on the roster, the Jets need to do something. They could bring back Geno Smith, which has caused plenty of Jets fans to punch themselves in the face, Enempali style. The Jets also could pursue Jay Cutler or Colin Kaepernick. One month ago, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reported that the Jets aren’t expected to pursue Cutler, but that was before Glennon and Hoyer said “no thanks” and the Bills decided to keep Tyrod Taylor. Jeremy Bates, who coached Cutler both in Denver and Chicago, now serves as the quarterbacks coach in New York. If the Jets are comfortable with Cutler’s ability to handle the media microscope, why not bring in a guy who is clearly better than their other options ? Then there’s Kaepernick. A favorite of Rex Ryan when he coached the Jets, Kaepernick is available. But he brings political baggage, even though he reportedly will stand for the anthem in 2017.Jets owner Woody Johnson, a Trump supporter and presumptive ambassador to the United Kingdom, may want nothing to do with Kaepernick’s politics. Plenty of fans may not want anything to do with him either, and the possibility of alienating a chunk of the fan base will be a concern for any team that gives Kaepernick a job. Still, Kaepernick is still clearly better than Geno Smith. So why would the Jets go in Geno’s direction ? As one source put it earlier today, “Because they are the J-E-T-S, Jets. Jets. Jets.” > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/09/what-will-the-jets-do-at-quarterback/

kelly
Jets could be a landing spot for Robert Griffin III Posted by Michael David Smith on March 10, 2017, 2:25 PM EST Getty Images Beggars can’t be choosers, so Robert Griffin III would surely be interested in any team that’s interested in him. Cut by the Browns today, Griffin is a free agent, and there are surely not many teams that would bring him in for anything more than a low-salary backup’s money. So the news from NJ.com that Griffin is intrigued by the Jets shouldn’t come as any surprise. Griffin would be intrigued by anyone who needs a quarterback, and the Jets — with only Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg under contract — may be the most quarterback-needy team in the NFL right now. The Jets may be the team that makes the most sense for Griffin: He visited them last year before signing with the Browns, so there has already been some mutual interest expressed. And they’re surely planning to sign someone with some starting experience. Griffin is probably the cheapest option. Jay Cutler and Colin Kaepernick are among the other free agent quarterbacks who have been mentioned as possibilities for the Jets. At this point, they’re both probably better quarterbacks than Griffin, but they’re also probably both going to be more expensive. If the Jets are looking to rebuild on the cheap this year, Griffin could be their man. > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/10/jets-could-be-a-landing-spot-for-robert-griffin-iii/
kelly
Jets have touched base with Jay Cutler Posted by Michael David Smith on March 13, 2017, 10:54 AM EDT Getty Images The Jets are one of the few remaining teams still searching for a starting quarterback, and Jay Cutler is one of the few remaining quarterbacks who’s capable of starting and looking for work. So will they get together? They’ve at least been in touch, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, who adds that a visit is likely. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith are both free agents, which means the Jets are down to Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on their quarterback depth chart at the moment. They’d surely like to head into training camp with at least one quarterback who has starting experience, and Cutler could be the guy. Other players who have been listed as options at quarterback for the Jets include Robert Griffin III and Colin Kaepernick. > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/13/jets-have-touched-base-with-jay-cutler/

hiflyer739
New to the board. The Jets QB options are uninspiring. Signing Kaepernick would make me watch some other team next season and Cutler is not a lot better. As for QB of the Future, Watson shows promise but will take more than a year to develop. I've followed his career at Clemson closely and one of his best attributes is pocket presence and a doggedly calm demeanor. Never rattled, even after a bad throw (or two). Gonna be a long season, but who knows - maybe there's a Dak Prescott hiding out there.
