Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Sam Wyche has died. He was 74.

Wyche went into hospice on Dec. 30 and died Thursday morning of melanoma, officials with the Bengals organization confirmed.

Wyche was hired by the Bengals in 1984 and remained in Cincinnati through 1991. His 64 wins with the Bengals are the second most in franchise history, behind Marvin Lewis.

Known as an emotional coach, Wyche led the Bengals to their second Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXIII, during which the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Bengals 20–16.

WLWT will update this story.
