Where did Kroft come from? Was he considered starting material when he was signed?

Kroft played in cincy for an organization that has zero ability to judge talent or build a team.

He was a 3rd round pick from rutgers who has great size for the position and can actually block.  Hes an excellent #2 TE who will have to serve as our #1 this year as apparently Herndon just cant get it together

I Love Robert Salehas as HC!!!!

We even got to see a small bit of the exuberance he can have on the sideline, as he was known to do in SF after that 4th and 1 stop by the D.

I'm so glad he was CJ and JDs pick.

He never was given a shot at the #1 spot in Cincy and was snake bit by injuries, as he said in Buffalo.

Like you said, great size at 6-6, 255 who seems displaced Herndon as the #1.  Herndon doesnt seem to have nothing over Kroft.

Let's start with what wasn't good.  Injuries.  We are really snake-bitten right now.  This has to settle down and soon.

Now onto the good stuff.  In no particular order:

  • Wilson - simply put he is doing everything you could dream of for a rookie.  I'm almost giddy from today's game just because of that.
  • TE play - Kroft came to stake out the #1 role today.  He showed a lot of poise, speed and power and ability to hold onto the ball on those two scores.  Good for him!
  • TE play part 2 - Wesco keeps making a splash here and there but shows enough to be a valuable piece of the offense.
  • Corey Davis - Today he looked like a true #1 WR.  It should only get better from here.
  • OL - 1 sack allowed all day.  Becton is fine.  Rest of the line protected.  Run blocking had a few issues, but AVT is still not in there.
  • Bryce Huff - No...he isn't Lawson, but he showed that he can do his part and pressure the QB.  When QW gets back in, this could get more interesting.  We might still have some pass rush.
  • Ammendola - Ladies and Gentlemen, as of today, we have a Kicker.  Might not last, but 3 FGs and 2 XPs including a strong 54-yarder made a statement.  We might bring in competition but for the moment, I'm not terrified of having to kick a FG.
  • Michael Carter - Probably the most potential of the RBs.  I want to see more of him earlier on next week.
  • Mosley - He looks good.  Not much in terms of splash plays today, but he's around the ball, making tackles, and healthy.  With Lawson down, he is going to be a very important piece of this defense.

The secondary was mixed to me.  Some good plays but they got burned early on a few times.  Young guys so work in progress but hoping they continue to develop quickly.

But overall, that's a long list of things that made me happy today.  After the mood here the past few days, it was a pleasant surprise.

But most of all - I really have the feeling we have a QB that can become one of the greats.  I'm going to ride this wave with a big smile on my face until it dumps me, hoping it never does.

What did I miss?

Agree with mostly everything. Disagree with Wesco. Not sure making play every now and then is enough. Still haven't seen enough of him but he prob is on the roster either way.

I knew he had suffered an injury but I didn't think it was so serious as to prevent him from playing? But that's a major disappointment for me in this game. I was really looking forward to seeing Mims play more after such a valiant performance last week. It's obvious he has the talent to compete against any WR the Jets currently have. Unfortunately, it seems like he could be one of those players that are simply too fragile to stick....

Wesco got a  bunch of reps yesterday, and played great.

He's a FB.  Your not going to see his name much in the box scores for big plays.  What you will see is him knocking people on their a*s so other people can make big plays.   There was a lot of that yesterday.

Then I would edit your post as TE 2.

I think Kroft is now TE1. He's much bigger than I realized and moves pretty well for his size.

Might take a flyer on Sternberger, if GB cuts him.

Doesn't Sternberger have a 2 game suspension for something off-field?  They mentioned it after he had a drop early, that he really needed to prove it as he would be out early due to something "not good"

NY Jets: 5 players other than Zach Wilson who impressed in preseason win over the Packers

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was impressive on Saturday against the Packers.

Of course, his nearly perfect performance came against Green Bay's backup defense. So it would be wise to take a deep breath before you picture him hoisting the Lombardi Trophy and slipping on a Hall of Fame blazer. Still, it was a clear sign of progress. And it's OK for Jets fans to feel optimistic about the future with the regular season less than a month away.

But Wilson wasn't the only one that impressed at Lambeau Field. Several other Jets players showed they're on the right track in the 23-14 win over the Packers. We won't know for sure what it all means until the games count for real. But here are five other guys who looked good in Saturday's second preseason game.

Green Bay Packers safety Innis Gaines (38) pushes New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis (84) out of bounds following a reception during their preseason football game on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. Wm. Glasheen USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

WR Corey Davis

The numbers tell an impressive story: Davis had four catches for a game-high 70 yards. But even more important is the clear rapport that the veteran receiver has built with his rookie quarterback. "I really have a lot of trust in him and all his one-on-one routes where he’s going to get open," Wilson said. "And I hope he has trust that I’m going to get him the ball.” Not only did Wilson get Davis the ball, but he got it to him in critical situations — including twice to keep drives alive on third down. Overall, Wilson was 4-of-6 on pass attempts to Davis and found him for his two longest completions this preseason: passes for 27 and 24 yards on the same drive that led to Wilson's first touchdown as a pro.

LT Mekhi Becton

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said the big left tackle was "not playing at his best and he knows that." But LaFleur also expressed confidence that better days were coming. Saturday was one of those better days. Becton continued to dominate as a run blocker and had a strong day in pass protection — along with the entire first-team offensive line, which allowed only one pressure in four drives. Yes, it was against the Packers' backup defenders, but after a difficult start to training camp, it was a clear step in the right direction for the 22-year-old.

New York Jets tight end Tyler Kroft (81) scores a touchdown against Green Bay Packers during their preseason football game on Saturday at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

TE Tyler Kroft

The Jets' tight ends have been underwhelming during training camp, but Kroft changed that in a big way Saturday with two touchdown catches. He made a tough grab on the goal line to secure Wilson's first touchdown pass as a pro early in the second quarter. And Kroft also had a nice run after the catch for another touchdown just before halftime — with some help from battery mate Chris Herndon, who had several timely, important blocks Saturday. It was exactly the kind of performance the Jets needed from their tight ends.

CB Michael Carter II

It wasn't a great day for the defense, but Carter continued to quietly build his strong training camp and preseason resume. And he made the most of his first opportunity professional start at nickel cornerback at Lambeau. He didn't allow a reception or a target in the 14 passing plays he was on the field. Carter has gotten the chance to work against Wilson during training camp and has clearly earned the trust of the coaching staff. He's in a tight competition with Javelin Guidry, who started the first preseason game, for the permanent role. It will be interesting to see who works with the starting defense against the Eagles this week.

K Matt Ammendola

The pressure was Ammendola this week, as he came into Saturday's game as the only kicker on the roster. And he certainly delivered in a big way, capitalizing on his first opportunity by drilling a field goal from 54 yards. He finished three-for-three on field goal attempts — he also made kicks from 46 and 30 yards — and both of his extra-point attempts. The performance gives Ammendola, a 2020 undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State, a real chance to be the Jets' kicker Week 1 in Carolina. But a pressure-packed week against the Eagles awaits.
