- Q: Mel, you are the New Orleans Saints. What are you looking for if you trade the No. 2 pick, and who do you draft if you keep the pick? -- Terrence, New Orleans

A: First of all, I would have sat at No. 2 and drafted Matt Leinart and not signed Drew Brees. Brees is an excellent quarterback, but he is coming off a shoulder injury. I think Leinart is going to be the next Ken Stabler. But that's neither here nor there.

The Saints may draft defensive end Mario Williams, although D'Brickashaw Ferguson would fill a bigger need at left tackle. The speculation is the Saints will take best player available, N.C. State defensive end Mario Williams over Virginia tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Who do they need more? Ferguson, but Williams is a great player. The Saints also need a defensive tackle, cornerback, linebacker and offensive tackle. What I would do is move down from the second pick to the fourth or seventh pick. If they are forced to keep the pick, it looks like it's going to be Williams, and you can't argue with that even though they already have Will Smith and Charles Grant.

- Q: Assuming the Jets don't trade the pick, if tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson is off the board when they pick fourth overall, who do you see them drafting? -- Josh, Long Island

A: If Ferguson is gone, then maybe linebacker A.J. Hawk. The Jets also could move down a bit and get a defensive back like Michael Huff from Texas. They have need areas that would allow them to move down a bit in the first round and still get the player they need.

- Joe NJ: Mel, with the recent history of quarterback busts and with so many needs to fill aren't the NY Jets better off drafting Ferguson,Williams or Hawk rather than a quarterback.

SportsNation Mel Kiper: I don't think you worry about past busts when you draft a player. You're never worried about past drafts and mistakes by other teams. You have to feel like you have to evaluate players the way you do. I think the Jets are a team that would be helped by Ferguson. They could also use a RB. Their need areas goes 7 deep. That's why having the extra picks is very valuable for the Jets.

- Kale, Montana: What is your opinion on Omar Jacobs? Do you think he can be a starter in his rookie season?

SportsNation Mel Kiper: Omar is a hard one to predict, I've said this all along. It's the release that concerns me. The system he played in at Bowling Green is very QB friendly. For me he's a second day guy.

yeah Omar Jacob's release concerns him but he's got no problems with Vince Young's release.

How many busts and flops has this guy Kiper hyped up over the years? The Peter Warricks, the Ryan Leafs, the Courtney Browns, the Robert Gallerys. And people treat his word like it's Gospel.

Trade down Mike. The Raiders and Vikings want our pick. Do it, do it.

I don't think that's fair to Kiper...how many picks has he hit on the nose compared to busts/flops? No one is 100% certain on these kids...that's why it's always referred to as a crap shoot.

One Jets draft bust that I do remember Mel crowing about was CB- Tony Stargell. At the time, Mel said he was a steal. A solid corner for years to come. RIGHT!!!!

That's why trading down is the best thing to do. This isn't the nba draft where you have only a handful of good prospects. Especially since we have so many holes to fill on offense and the defensive line.

Mel Kiper = Just another guy who watches football

Mel Kipers a dumbass. I thought I would change my views on him when he had us taking Hawk if D Brick is off the board. Then he talks about us draftin Michael Huff. WTF our secondary is fine.

Mel Kiper= horrible draft analyst with stupid hair.

Our secondary is fine and couldn't use Michael Huff?

Just because you clowns don't agree with him or because he makes the occasional mistake does not mean he is a dumbass.

Despite his stupid hair, if you could feel confident about David Barrett being our shut down corner...I would love to hear it. I could beat Barrett on a crossing pattern or a deep out. He's was fortunate to take on the #2 wr the last few years and even then, was still only respectable at CB.

Drafting down is still the best policy...CB or not...its what we need to do.

I think Mel might be in the tank for Vince Young ;)

But that aside, Mel has painted himself into a corner and now he can't get out ... it's tough to find a graceful exit strategy when you have been such a voiciferous supporter of Vince Young for as long as Mel has, basically declaring him a TOP 3 lock for months ... so IMO he's pretty much stuck with this lemon and almost has to convince himself he still loves VY ... it's almost like he's blinded himself to the warts because he already married VY, he's stuck with him for better or worse

This is really rediculous talk. Mel "painted himself into a corner"? Are you flippin serious? I'm still waiting for Bit's rebuttle on Bryan Thomas, or D Rob or your's on Justin Miller. Point is value in a player is a relative term as the players value will go up or down throughout this process as well as throughout their carreers. Most of it depends on how hard they work. If Mel drops Young off his chart tomorrow I would not care at all as most shouldn't. It would have nothing to do with his ability to scout a player. Just like if Bit or Ham finally admit how wrong they have been in the past.

Lets talk about where draft daddy rated Demarcus Ware at the end of last season compared to where Mel did. Was he even on your site?

Sorry, but 'ol Mel really exposed himself with even mentioning taking Huff in a trade down. That was a really dopey comment. Sure, ANY team could use a great safety like Huff, but that is about 15th on the Jets' need list. For a supposed NFL specialist.... he's about a 9 on the Wonderlik.

Yeah because the Jets safeties are great. Let's face it the Jets could pick anything 4th or trade down and pick anything and it would make sense.

Ham, I hope we are good enough friends for you to not take offense to the earlier post. Yes you are one of the most knowledgeable draft people out there, as well as Bit and R44. But no one is perfect and no one is above being dead wrong in the draft arena.

Um... although you might not be crazy about them, Coleman, Rhodes and Celestin are OK safeties.... take Huff when we have no:

QB

3-4 NT

4-3 NT

3-4 OLB

ORT

Center

#1 CB

...and bigger holes at TE, RB, DE than at safety, I DO think, I am CERTAIN that taking Huff would be a blunder of the biggest proportion. There are SO many teams that want and NEED Huff, if we traded down, we'de trade down AGAIN to a team like the Rams that would be drooling over him.

Sorry, I stand by that statement.... Mel calling to draft Huff in a trade down is the epitomy of a guy that has no clue. Taking Huff would be something even Bradway would not be stupid enough to do.

Absolutely right, rs ... the best draftniks, VERY BEST, barely bat .500

And that's the best of the best!!

As for DeMarcus Ware, bad example ... I loved him last year and had him highly ranked BEFORE he made his move up the board ... this is true, rs ... if you do a search at the other board you will find some of my posts on Ware, where I even discussed the possibility of dealing Abe, drafting Ware, and switching to a 34 defense

But that aside, your premise remains correct ... like everyone one else I have as many hits as misses, on a good year ... though last year I wouldn't say Justin Miller was a miss {I still believe we are going to be thrilled with that pick}, I would say my worse projection for the Jets was that fat stiff Pouha

Miller showed me enough flashes to believe we will be very happy about that pick .. Pouha showed nothing
