Anthony Schlegel

Too soon to say. He looked like garbage, but players do turn it around.

Hell, how long did it take for Bryan Thomas to show us more than "flashes"?

I don't think it was a coincidence that Bryan Thomas and Victor Hobson finally showed us something concrete. Something besides potential.

Give the kid a break. Given a full off season of workouts, plus training camp and a full training camp, the kid should be better than what he's shown so far.

Gibbon here . . . .

As the resident defender of Schlegel on this sight I vote for giving him more time.

I only remember the one ST penalty in the Green Bay game. When was the other one.

I believe that the Manginious has a plan for the Boar Hunter that did not include a lot of playing time for Anthony this year. He treated him like a rookie QB. I dont think that all of this years ILBs that saw playing time will be back, so I think next year will be the year in which we get a chance to really evaluate him as a pick and a player.

What do you think, bust or do we give him more time?

Played in 4 games recorded 1 tackle, and had 2 ST penalties that come to mind...

Discuss...

Every draft board from ESPN to the Sporting News had him as a late second day or undrafted player. But he was tough, smart, everything Mangini looks for in a player.

You're right. It's a shame, though that Schlagel didn't play at the All Pro level Bryan Thomas did during his rookie year. I thought he could at least perform at the Pro Bowl level Victor Hobson played.

Big deal.

He's a first year player. If we closed the book and labeled some of the players drafted during Herm's regime as busts after their first season, then Dewayne Robertson, Bryan Thomas, Victor Hobson, Mike Nugent, Justin Miller, and Chris Baker would be run out of town.

The truth is that these players might simply have been slower to grow than others. I could also easily argue that Herm retarded their gorwth and the players finally displayed their abilities after Sermon Edwards bailed out on us.

Is it any wonder that players like Jerricho Cotchery, Chris Baker, etc responded witht he best seasons of their careers? Is it any wonder that Cotchery said, in not so many words, that Herm held him back?

I'm sure you'll reply by blaming Terry Bradway, but you'd only be playing into my hands. If all the blame is on Bradway for selecting the wrong players, then Herm is either an idiot and incapable of scouting players for his team, or Bradway simply didn't trust Herm (with good reason, see Matthew Hatchette and Damien Robinson, for starters) and took it upon himself to restock the team.

See, I believe that Herm did have a say as to whom would be drafted, whom he wanted via free agency. He was not left in the dark.

Give the kid a break. He might develop into someone that will contribute.

Dude - Herm brought us Steve White. I'll bet you feel stupid now, MJ.

And we should've had John Lynch. It's not Herm's fault that he couldn't convince his godson's father to play for him.

He might contribute and I'm not looking to give up on the kid, but... Hobson always looked good to me and didn't spend any time inactive. He had more sacks and more ints his rookie year than Schlegel had plays on D. Thomas was obviously a fish out of water at DE. Problem is that Schlegel is an older guy who was supposedly smart, well suited and able to pick up the system quickly. More like Pouha. You expect a guy like Brad Smith to have growing pains, less so from Schlegel.

The issue is that Schlegel was a reach at that pick. I'm not ready to slaughter Mangini for reaching. Sometimes you believe in a player and take the risk, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. After three seasons we look back and the rest of this class continues to look as good as they do now as they progress I won't care if Schlegel never plays a down.

Oh the pick was definately a bust pick. He however hasn't been on the field enough to say one way or the other. We could of had him in the 5th or even 6th round. I think he could turn out to be a decent player, and people would say "Wow, what a great pick up we had in the 6th." Now we expect him to be productive right away.

what a terrible pick, a 25 year old rookie with 0 upside, trade him for a pair of socks.

Again defending Schlegel

I dont really think its fair to judge him in the same way you judge the other rookies in regards to playing time. No other rookie had as much quality depth in front of them.

D'Brick -- 0 veterans to beat out

Mangold -- once Teague went down before camp 0 veterans to beat out

Clemmons -- nobody expects a 2nd round rookie QB to play.

E. Smith -- Early season injuries got him some Defensive playing time and he

earned his way into a bigger role.

B. Smith -- His multi-use role did not exist before he showed up.

L. Washington -- Curtis was done, Houston kept getting injured, so his only

only competition was Barlow and Blaylock.

Coleman (the Rookie CB) -- injuries, inconsistencies among those infront of

opened the door for him to get some PT.

Schlegel -- Vilma, Barton, Kassell all played his position and had all in the past

two season recorded 100 tackle seasons. None of them missed

a single play because of injury.

ST -- The pros arent like college. Since you can only dress 45 players your backups have to play ST, plus every team has 1 deep snapper, 1 kicker, 1 punter, and usually one ST specialist that was Spencer's role for the Jets. If you arent in the two deep (Vilma missed 0 snaps and Barton or Kassell who split time could serve as his back up) then its hard to get a game day spot.

That said a few things seem obvious:

1. Schlegel got off on the wrong foot with Westhoff and his block in the back penalty agaisnt GB didnt help.

2. His pass coverage skill needed developing. His struggles against the passing game in Washington probably guaranteed that Kassell would be Barton's back up/ split time guy to start the season.

3. Mangini loves Brad Kassell. Kassell's ability to impress Mangini in practice with his hard work and positive attitude along with his superior experience won him a place in the defensive scheme which meant, barring injury, that Schlegel was going to get zero playing time. Personally, I think coach should have payed a little more attention to Kassell's performance on game days which I dont think was very good.

I think that Barton will not be with the Jets next season and that Kassell and Schlegel will split time at that position. Eventually, I think that Schlegel will take over that spot.

I should've known you'd chime in. You're even more sarcastic than me. At least, I hope you were being sarcastic...:)
