The New York Giants and Jets have awarded a $1 billion contract to Swedish construction company Skanska AB to build their new, jointly owned Meadowlands football stadium, club officials announced Friday.

A groundbreaking for the 82,000-seat replacement for Giants Stadium tentatively is scheduled for June, with the new facility expected to open in 2010.

"Skanska has in recent years proven to be among the leading stadium builders in the world and has shown a great affinity and understanding of the U.S. market," said Giants co-owner John Mara. "This is also the largest international firm in the world of this type."

The $998 million deal with Skanska AB does not include another $400 million in "soft costs" for the $1.4 billion stadium, such as legal, engineering and architectural fees.

The new stadium will include about 200 luxury suites and more than 9,000 premium, or "club," seats. Details of the exterior design are expected to be made public in March or April, followed by a groundbreaking in June.

Skanska AB built Reliant Stadium in Houston and Gillette Field in New England, each of which has received critical acclaim.

Jets owner Woody Johnson said the 2.2 million-square-foot Meadowlands stadium would "set new standards for the NFL and stadiums around the world."

The Giants and Jets are sharing the costs of building the stadium, and they will keep the profits. The National Football League recently agreed to lend $600 million toward the costs. The teams will pay $5 million a year in rent.

A separate retail and restaurant facility is planned by the teams for the Giants Stadium site, once the new facility is opened.

It's been a while since this story came out, and we still haven't seen any design plans. Has anyone heard anything else about this? Pictures, progress, still on target?? Anything???

POINT OF ROCKS -- A division of Canam Group Inc. will make steel components for a $1.4 billion sports stadium for the New York Giants and New York Jets in New Jersey.Linda Norris, spokeswoman for the company, said Wednesday that one of the production lines at the plant is being upgraded with new equipment for the project and that 30 to 40 additional hires will be made during the coming year.

Structal-Heavy Steel Construction, a division of Canam Group, will provide joists, structural beams and other sections of the steel aspect of the stadium for the contractor, Skanska USA Civil.

"Over the years, we've participated in the construction of 14 stadiums or sports facilities for professional teams," said Structal president Luc Pelland. "Our reputation in the construction of complex projects and our commitment to customer satisfaction are Structal's major trademarks."

The plant currently has 220 employees.

"We expect to hire about 30 to 40 in the plant, and perhaps five in the office," Norris said.

She said many of the larger steel components will be manufactured at the company's plant in St. Gedeon, Quebec. "We normally do joists," Norris said, "but we expect to get the runover from the Canadian plant and we are preparing one of our lines for that."

Fabrication of the components will begin this summer, with completion scheduled for the end of 2008.

The 82,000-seat stadium is expected to be ready in 2010. It is the first time two professional football teams have formed a partnership to build a stadium.

In recent years, Structal and Canam Group have been associated with many other construction projects in North America, most recently two baseball stadiums in New York City. Other Structal projects include the Patriots' Stadium in New England; the Eagles' Stadium in Philadelphia; the Newseum in Washington, D.C.; the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center; the Niagara Falls Casino; the Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Toronto; the Montreal-Trudeau International Airport; as well as a number of aluminum smelters for Alcan and Pechiney.

Canam Group Inc. is an industrial company operating 11 plants specialized in the fabrication and design of construction products and solutions. The company employs close to 3,000 people in Canada, the United States, Romania and India, and has partnerships with companies in Mexico, France, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Russia.

Well, thats a start I guess...the fact they're going to start building the pieces. Still no official designs though. That link up earlier, looked like a bunch of different designs that have been thrown around since the project was announced. I would love to see some definite plans.

Why the hell won't they put a retractible roof on this thing? It makes no sense, they could have the super bowl and lots of other winter events.

I'm more concerned that they use it for football. Do we want to become a dome team?

The edge we have is that teams come into that stadium in Nov. and Dec. and

hopefully Jan. Those teams may not be used to playing in cold weather or a

snow storm.

If you don't think teams use their stadium as an edge just look at what the Fins do.

If you play them in Sept. they make you wear their home uniforms which are

usually of a dark color and your playing in 90 plus heat.

You take advantage of everything you can.

Well, when the West Side Stadium was in consideration, it was supposed to have a roof, but the plan was it would always be open for Jets games. The roof was only an extra selling point so they could land a super bowl, final four, concerts, etc.

That would be the only way i would take a new stadium with a roof on it. Football is meant to be played outside, in the elements, and yes, it is an edge in the colder months.

Yes. I hate roofs, the ruin football.

Think about sitting in the stands, barely being able to feel your fingers... now imagine that the JETS and the team they are facing need to deal with that same cold weather... it really gives a coach like Mangini and advantage...
