Green Day: Chilly start for rookie Winters

The New York Jets have a Geno Smith situation unfolding at left guard.

If you haven't noticed, rookie Brian Winters is struggling, really struggling. Even though he has started only eight games, Winters tops all guards in the NFL with nine sacks allowed, according to ProFootballFocus.com. For an interior lineman, nine sacks is the equivalent of 19 interceptions for a quarterback, but at least Smith can say he's played every game.

If Rex Ryan wants to do what's in the best interest of the team, as he always says, he'd bench Winters -- if, in fact, he has that power. Look, we know Vladimir Ducasse isn't the second coming of Larry Allen, but he would be an upgrade at the position. For those keeping track, he allowed two sacks in four games before being benched in favor of Winters.

We know why Ducasse isn't playing: He's in the final year of his contract and he'll be playing elsewhere next season. Winters was John Idzik's third-round pick, and the first-year general manager is calling the shots here, folks. Winters is part of the future, so Idzik wants him on the field even if he's hurting the present. Similar politics are playing out at the quarterback position, where Smith has done nothing over the last few weeks to justify his starting role.

Idzik preaches competition, but the playing field isn't always level.

ICYMI: As expected, the Jets placed KR Josh Cribbs (shoulder) on season-ending injured reserve. To replace him, the Jets signed return specialist Darius Reynaud, most recently of the Tennessee Titans. They killed two birds with one signing, as Reynaud can return punts and kickoffs. ... The Jets worked out several players Tuesday, including Reynaud and CB DeQuan Menzie (Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs). ... The Jets dropped only one spot in the ESPN.com Power Rankings, slipping to No. 23. ... Our film review of the Jets' nightmare loss to the Miami Dolphins. Warning: Contains graphic descriptions of botched plays; for mature audiences only.

What about trying one of the other rookies there?  Campbell or Aboushi....how bad they can they be?

In camp at least Aboushi was one of the worst guards I had ever seen.  Can't remember what Campbell did, but if you put Aboushi out there Smith will die

people say Vlad is just as bad as Winters... it's not true. Vlad had a spell of penalties but Winters is absolutely worse (and he gets penalties too). the article is 100% correct vlad isn't playing because the Jets aren't gonna resign him. But in a true meritocracy he would be playing LG and matt simms would be the starting QB.

Sad that we burn a 2nd and a 3rd on two guards and neither are any good, probably.

Going out on a limb here in suggesting that they'll play better for the new coach.

you're hoping they play better. the simplest answer is that half the roster is street free agents and they just stink. lets be real it's not like this was a loaded roster expected to do all sorts of great things.

the whole thing is an overreaction to not drafting Chance Warmack. We don't need a guard in round 1! instead we'll sign Stephen Peterman, draft a guard in rd 3, draft a guard in rd 5 and draft a guard in rd 6. That should do it !

What's the excuse for the last three years?

They don't have a QB. If they hire a new coach and continue to not have a QB, mark my words, we will be in the same spot or worse this time next year. If they hire a new coach and find him a QB, the team will have success (and everyone will praise the coach). the coach gets credit and blame unfairly it's really the players that make the difference in this league. One player in particular the quarterback.

Agreed they need to find the QB, but the Jets have had a player development issue since 09. The product you're seeing now is the result of that attrition.

Idzik's first draft is  poor based on one year- my hope ids that at least Milliner can turn into a player and not a turnstile.

beyond looking totally lost on the field, Milliner doesn't even look that fast.    I have no idea what's wrong with him but even sucking he should be able to run in a straight line and it doesn't look like he can do that.    This was a total debacle of a pick, especially with Warmack being the obvious pick.    Reminds me of Bryan Thomas / Ed Reed.

Yeah, this wasn't exactly an auspicious debut for Johnny Rockets. I'm clinging to the hope that a big part of the problem is the holdover scouts who have since been replaced.

Idzik isn't a personnel guy, his strength is apparently being a grown-up in rooms. He brought in Rod Graves to be his personnel guy, and couldn't come up with anyone worthy of replacing Bradway. I'm sure things are looking up.

How hard can it be to not draft Stephen Hill or Vernon Gholston.

Rod Graves best QB pick in his 15 years as the Cardinals GM looks to be Jake Plummer, in his first year, presumably with the holdover scouts from the previous regime. He did select T0mShane favorite Matt Leinart 10th overall once, though, so that's something.

But Idzik was on the payroll when the Seahawks drafted Russell Wilson, so all's good.

He didn't luck into The Magic Quarterback, I guess.

Yes he was, but Pete sent him for coffee when he and Schneider discussed it

I don't support drafting a guard top 10.  What I do support is doing a better job of scouting offensive linemen so we don't have to burn early picks on bust guards.  I know, silly me, asking for too much out of an NFL organization....
