Rex getting more national praise

Pac

Recommended Posts

Such garbage. John Fox is 2 games over .500 without Peyton Manning and has a 2-14 season under his belt.

You shrug off Rex's ability to scheme a defense as if it's not mportant. What exactly is John Fox known for?

Literally no one is saying John Fox played a big part in getting the Broncos to the SB.. Jack Del Rio coached a large portion of the season for chrissakes..

heres a question for all the rex haters:

is John Fox a better coach than Rex Ryan? is Pete Carroll?

Any coach that can take a team Qb'd by JAKE DELHOMME to within a field goal of the almighty Patriots, has got something going and now has taken his 2nd different team to the SB, so their is no comparison there.

Carroll has taken a team left for dead with a 3rd round QB that people screamed was undersized and has take a 5th round cornerback and turned the dude into a freak out there. He didn't get a TOP 5 drafted QB, and he didn't get a 1st round corner. The guy is killing it out there.

Please, if you going to compare a guy who has 8-8, 6-10, and 8-8 as his last 3 seasons, please compare him to his counter parts like Joe Philbin, Jason Garrett, and Gary Kubiak.

This post is a big pile of poop.

No one was taking Rich Kotites philosophies and implementing them with new programs.  Bob Sutton and Pettine tapped into the genius of Rex Ryan and his teachings play a big part in how they're running their respective teams.

It's the very definition of a coaching tree.

Todd Haley falls under the Kotite tree.

Goofus advises coach Ryan that a night out at Dave and Buster's is "just what the team needs" and will fulfill the coaches want of players to "like" him.

Gallant advises coach Ryan to shut the **** up about Super Bowl parades and preparations, and to act like a real head coach and not a mascot.

how about a guy who took a team QB'ed by Mark Sanchez to 2 champ games? Who is better Delhomme or Sanchez?

You're a free market kinda guy. If you're an owner and you had to choose between Fox and Rex to run your team, you're really taking Rex there?

rex is better at his job than john fox is... (job being described as inspiring a team to perform and running a defense). we'd rather have Rex's 3-4/46 system than John's 4-3. And Rex is bigger in big games (against HOF QBs)

so yes, It's not crazy to believe Rex Ryan is better than John Fox. or at least similar enough that it's splitting hairs

the problem with this team was never the head coach it was always the QB.

Beating Rex with Tim Tebow as his starter and looking a little bit too much like Hershel from The Walking Dead.

Not for nothin' but I'm pretty sure Rex didn't tell Nacho to throw the worst pick 6 anyone's ever thrown in the history of the NFL late in the 4th quarter to get the Broncos to within one score.

uhh

We can define the job of a head coach many ways (set the tone, give the speeches, game plan, throw the challenge flags, make the big go for it on 4th down call, hire and manage his staff etc) but beyond all that they will either call plays on offense, call plays on defense or neither. Rex calls the D plays, Fox doesn't (Jack del rio calls the D). Therefore Rex does more than John. A guy like ANdy Reid calls the offense and doesn't know jack about defense.

the overall point is the two coaches in the super bowl are defensive. this idea that the Jets need an offensive coach to get to the promised land is fantasy.

I'm pretty sure that Jack didn't technically tell Roger to kill Piggy but we all know how that one worked out.

You taking Lovie Smith or Rex?

yep Rex again. How many times has Lovie beaten Brady and Manning ? the fact that Rex routinely splits with the pats, who have a first ballot HOF at QB is a friggin miracle. Before REx the Jets would lose 2 or 3 times a year to the Pats (counting playoffs).

We've beaten this to death, over and over. Rex goes back to Bledsoe ASAP, if he goes to Brady at all in the first place.

Same idea-Parcells dumps Foley for Vinny, Mirer for Lucas. Rex does not make those moves. Ever. Rex not giving Simms a full week this year after the season was done was a disgrace. They're still scared poopless to let Geno throw a pass unless there is no other choice, so we can stop with the nonsense that Smith is the vaunted "QB of the Future". Reminds me of Edwards refusing to play Pennington despite the fact that he was more suited to the WCO than Testaverde. playing Vinny Testaverde in the WCO is like hiring Black Sabbath to play a 5-year old's birthday party. Defense first(defense only ?) coaches are usually scared to death about making a mess of the offense, so they fall back on the easy answer instead of taking any risks.

Parcells didn't dump Foley for Vinny. Foley got injured. Mirer was a stopgap at best who wasn't in training camp. Parcells is so overrated by Jets fans its crazy. Dude did everything but burn down the building when he left yet there are still people who suck him off at every turn. Un-*******-real.

Any reasonable explanation why Simms didn't get one game this season?  Was Geno that great? I'm all ears.

Why the New York Jets Won't Regret Bringing Rex Ryan Back in 2014-15

By

Aidan Mackie

It's now official. Rex Ryan will be back on the New York Jets' sideline in 2014. After ESPN.com's Rich Cimini reported that he's signed a multi-year contract extension, his stay may well extend for a while longer.

Ryan was staring down the unemployment line just a few weeks ago, but Woody Johnson, John Idzik and the Jets' front office have decided to stick with him for at least a couple of seasons.

While Ryan can sometimes make questionable in-game decisions and attract unwanted press coverage to the team, he is indeed the best man for the job.

Ryan's defensive expertise, relationships with his players and ability to win under the most difficult of situations make him the ideal fit for Gang Green.

Defensive Expertise

On paper, the Jets' defensive unit slipped dramatically in 2014.

The unit ranked among the worst teams in the league against the pass and allowed a hefty 24.2 points per game. In fact, New York ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in total defense.

In Ryan's first four years at the helm, Gang Green's defensive unit ranked among the best in the league, slotting in at first, third, fifth and eighth in total defense, respectively.

However, despite the drop in statistical production, Rex coached the hell out of his defensive unit.

Only four of the 11 starters saw major playing time the year before. The Jets started two rookies, along with three inexperienced youngsters and three veteran castoffs, for the entire season. Antonio Cromartie was abysmal and the pass rush was invisible at times.

Despite the lack of experience and talent, the defense emerged as a solid unit. It was arguably the best run defense in the NFL and the defensive line—comprised of a rookie, an undrafted free agent and a third-year pro—dominated.

New York allowed 20 or fewer points on nine separate occasions, including against the high-powered offenses of the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints.

The unit single-handedly kept the Jets competitive, and that can be largely accredited to Ryan.

His wacky and uber-effective defensive schemes slowed down opposing offenses, despite the lack of firepower on the defensive side of the ball.

No matter what players are on the field, the Jets defense has always been solid. That kind of consistency and effectiveness is a result of Ryan's genius. Few others coaches are that responsible for their unit's success.

Relationships with Players

Ryan may be a polarizing figure in the media and among fans, but he is beloved by both his locker room and staff.

Every coach and player who has served under Ryan has had nothing but positive feelings towards him.

The former Ravens defensive coordinator has consistently gotten the most out of his roster, and that is directly correlated with his close bonds to his players. Ryan is a fiery and dedicated coach, and his locker room takes up his personality.

Ryan's close relationships with his players are even more important considering the inexperience of much of New York's roster. Young players now feel a distinct connection to Ryan, as he helped them adapt to the NFL and succeed at a professional level.

If he had been fired, their development could have been seriously stunted.

Ryan is so beloved, in fact, that when Woody Johnson announced that Ryan would return as head coach next season, New York's locker room exploded with excitement.

Everybody seems to love Rex.

Success Under Difficult Circumstances

Rex Ryan has the third-highest victory total and the second-highest winning percentage of any head coach in Jets history.

He has the most playoff wins (4) of any head coach in franchise history.

In five seasons under Ryan, Gang Green is 42-38 with two AFC Championship Game appearances and just one losing season.

Ryan has done all this with some of the worst quarterback play in recent memory.

Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith haven't done Ryan any favors, as they have combined for 80 touchdowns, 90 interceptions, a 55 percent completion percentage and just over 15,000 yards in those five seasons.

Ryan's success with such poor quarterbacking is astounding, to say the least. In a league where a quarterback can often single-handedly determine success, Ryan has defied reason.

If Ryan were to receive some decent quarterback play, there is no knowing how far the Jets could go.

Conclusion

Even though the Jets haven't made the postseason in three consecutive seasons and have continually been deficient in talent, they have managed to stay relevant throughout Ryan's tenure.

With the development of Geno Smith and other New York youngsters, Ryan could easily lead this team to glory.

Ryan dreams big. With his return, Jets fans should too

I would assume its because he was brutally bad in practice.

You do realize that we only see about 20% of the football these guys play, right?

How about no one in the locker room had any belief in Simms and since they started out 5-4 with Geno starting Rex could have lost the team had he benched him?

Benching a QB is much more complex decision than hearing some fans whine and the media bitch and deciding to appease a bunch of people who in reality have very little clue as to what is really going on.

Woody doesn't want another defensive mind with a mediocre head coaching record so far leave to go win Super Bowls with another team.

"defensive mind with a mediocre head coaching record", This part I could not agree more with. The last part is a JOKE, right?

No joke, I believe this is the reason Woody keeps Rex around as long as Rex shows something.  Belichick really didn't impress in Cleveland for a number of years, and his last season was a Schiano-like death watch.  He finally got fired after a midseason game that they lost 24-0 or something similar and the owner explained the players were just so disheartened he knew Belichick couldn't go on.

So what happens?  Belichick returns to Parcells as DC, wins a couple of Super Bowls in that position and gets a second run at HC.  This time he walks away from Woody, goes to New England and becomes a regular participant in the Super Bowl.   Woody does not want that to happen again.  He'd rather give Rex the benefit of the doubt,  and let Rex have his more successful second chance with the Jets instead of some other team.

More than any other reason, I think that is why Rex is here right now.

After this season was done, there was no reason not to find out if Simms, given a week with the 1s, could do the job.None. To not take a peek was coaching malfeasance.  Instead Rex stuck with Geno Smith, he of 12 TDs/21 INTs/55.8 comp%/8 fumbles-5 lost/3076 yards over 16 games. That sucks. You could look it up. And further the Jets were scared to death to let him pass anyway. There are enough tomato cans on any NFL schedule that if you can hold onto the ball and play defense you can eek out 7-9 wins. But that is not winning anything other than a contract for the coach. Worrying about those last  2 wins didn't matter. Would rather have seen what Simms can do. But we have no idea. Again, rex is not playing the backup because he doens't care about offense except not to be 2nd guessed. Playing Smith rather than a free agent does that.

Would love to see if you could isolate Smith's college numbers without Tayvon Austin. Do recall he blew chunks vs. Syracuse at the Stadium. The Jets habitually waste 2nd round picks. At a loss what is so great about Smith. If you wish to hold a parade off 2 lipstick on the pig wins at the end, good for you. I'm  utterly unimpressed.
