Even with Michael Vick visit Friday, Rex Ryan says Mark Sanchez could still QB Jets in 2014

BY SETH WALDER

The Jets need a quarterback that can push Geno Smith, and Michael Vick may be the man for the job. Vick started his visit with the Jets Friday, but Rex Ryan re-iterated what he said Thursday: Smith will be a tough out in a training camp competition.

“Geno Smith, regardless of who’s here...is going to be hard to beat out,” Ryan said on ESPN Radio Friday.

Vick is a strong candidate for the job because he could also be a suitable fill-in should Smith struggle in his second season. Beyond that, he’s also the best choice left: Ryan Fitzpatrick signed with the Texans Thursday, and the Texans and Raiders have reportedly agreed to a deal to trade Matt Schaub to Oakland.

Another quarterback that may be changing teams is Mark Sanchez, who is currently still on the Jets roster. Sanchez will likely be released in the next few days, but Ryan wouldn't call that a certainty. Asked if there was any scenario in which Sanchez could be quarterbacking the Jets this season, Ryan said, “That could happen, there’s no doubt. Obviously Mark’s still on this football team right now... so that’s still a possibility.”

Rex wants a pick for Sanchez as much as Idzik. Saying he's as good as gone does nothing to help get one. Even if it's not expected that the Jets will actually keep/start him, Rex loses nothing by saying this.

Schaub garnered a sixth. There is no round that currently exists for Sanchez' trade value.

What trade value? An old sock? Sanchez is one of the worst NFL QBs I've ever seen. We might have to give someone a 4th round just to take that piece of sh*t.

if your boss is trying to sell something, you don't tell the press it's worthless
