Rex Ryan’s brown-nosing of John Idzik reaches absurd levels

By Brian CostelloOctober 13, 2014 | 2:42pm

Rex Ryan sent a love letter to general manager John Idzik during Monday morning’s press conference.

Ryan defended Idzik’s first two draft classes, which have produced little impact. Ryan went back to his “A-plus” comment from last year about the 2013 class that was headlined by Dee Milliner, Sheldon Richardson and Geno Smith.

“I thought our first draft class with John was an A-plus. I’ll argue with anybody,” Ryan said. “Dee Milliner was going to be … is going to be an outstanding player. I know he hasn’t been out there as much as we would have liked, but the young man’s got tons of talent. It’s just a matter of him staying healthy. He’s going to be an outstanding player.”

The Jets believe Milliner tore his right Achilles tendon Sunday and will be out for the rest of the season. He has missed significant time in his first two seasons with varying injuries.

“Sheldon Richardson is a Pro Bowl player,” Ryan continued.

Hard to argue that one.

“You’ve got Geno Smith, a starting quarterback in this league that I think has upside,” Ryan said. “So, that’s a great pick.”

Hold the phone. A great pick? A GREAT PICK? This is where Ryan borders on sounding like a total sycophant or completely delusional (or both). Smith has seven interceptions, two fumbles and a 69.7 quarterback rating this season. Great pick?

“[brian] Winters, a starting guard. That’s pretty good when you’re drafting there,” Ryan said.

Winters, who could be done for the year with a torn ACL, has been a starter since midway through his rookie season, so Ryan is right about that. But he’s been a bad starter.

“Tommy Bohanon – it’s unfortunate he had the injury because Tommy was doing an outstanding job as a fullback for us,” Ryan said.

OK. Bohanon, a seventh-round pick, was a fine fullback until he broke his collarbone two weeks ago. But outstanding?

“You add [Oday] Aboushi – that’s about as good as it gets,” Ryan said.

Aboushi has not made a start yet, though he probably will Thursday with Winters hurt. Ryan forgot to mention Will Campbell, who was cut before this season.

As good as it gets? What a joke.

Ryan also defended this year’s class, which had 12 picks — five of which are left on the active roster.

“This year’s class hasn’t had the pop that last year’s had,” Ryan said. “We had an injury to [Dexter] McDougle. Jace Amaro looks like he could be a real deal. We’ll see how it goes. Calvin Pryor is the starting safety. I don’t think it’s fair to say we haven’t gotten any production out of them. I don’t think that’s fair.”

In other words: Please don’t fire me, John.

If you read between the lines, all Rex is really doing here is attributing the selections to Idzik. The spin he's putting on the players is one thing, but it's whatever, it's really about Rex saying "John's drafts".

Rex has never been what you could call subtle when it comes to taking credit for the good and throwing everyone he has to under the bus for the bad.

It doesn't particularly help his cause either way.  Even if he was being truthful in his assessment of the two draft classes, the question then becomes "Why are you 1-5 with -62 net points (3rd worst in the NFL) with all this talent?"

Oh, I thought the question would be "what's the name of the plastic surgeon that botched up your neck tuck?"

It's posturing.  Every exec in the NFL knows that these drafts have been horrible up to this point.  Rex is simply showing other teams that they don't have to worry about him throwing any of them under the bus if/when they make mistakes.  Smart move that makes him more marketable.  A writer pretending that Rex believes any of what he's saying is just taking a chance to get the fans riled up.

Why does anybody actually look for truth from NFL post game press conferences?  If Rex said, "Yeah, these drafts aren't making life easy" the back of the paper and all the TV guys will be screaming about the open dissension and criticism in the Jets front office.  If Rex says something supportive, they write and talk about how he's divorced from reality.

You'd think after 6 years fans would know better. What Rex says to room full of idiots means nothing.  He's defending his players.  Its what he does.  Its what he's always done.

This doesnt save his job.  He's 1-5.  He's gone at seasons end and the next idiot Head Coach will take over and it will be a fun fresh new face for us to yell at!!!

Exactly

It's part of the interview process for his next job.  Which he will get about 15 seconds after he's fired

I'm not so sure about that T0m. Think he's going to be in the mix for the Fish HC at least

Hmmm, that'd be an interesting spot, and Ross is just that dopey, but I think if Philbin goes, it'll be because the locker room turns on him. Ross might want someone a little more stable to run the franchise.

Rex's visibility level has probably been greater than any coach over the past 5-6 years. Nothing he does now can undo any impressions he's made over that time. The fact he's doing this just reinforces the bullsh*t used car salesman impression I've had of him all along.

the most informative part of that article was when Rex said Millner "was going to be" and then changed it to "is going to be"

He knows a CB tearing his Achilles like that is a real low bet to ever return.

Zero chance that Falcons GM brings in Rex.

Can't think of a coach who wouldn't do the same exact thing.  His roster has no talent and he was asked about that.  Season is still in progress so he hailed the GM and said the talent is awesome.

Yup...somebody with a QB and offense in place will pick him up and he'll win some rings.

Orrrrrrr, he's worried that the perception of him among the GM community is that he kills GM's careers. At this point, hiring Rex is like marrying Scott Peterson.

Ninja'd.

Unless the Raiders come calling, Rex is going to be a DC, though.

Oakland, Jacksonville would be a good fit. Two of Rexs biggest fans already live there. Cincinnati would be Rexs dream job with that roster.

Washington, you never know what Dan Snyder will do.

Right...a new boss is going to condemn him for not winning with all the talent his previous GM's gave him.
