Michael Bennett responds to Mike Pettine comments

Well, now we know Bennett has never read collision low crossovers.

RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett came to the defense of Russell Wilson on Thursday when asked about comments made by Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine earlier in the week.

"Obviously he's not good at picking quarterbacks," Bennett said during an interview on 710 ESPN Seattle. "Maybe he doesn't know what elite is. I think that Russell Wilson is very elite. He's been to two Super Bowls. It's only his fourth year. I don't think a lot of guys can say that.

"There's a lot of guys with a lot of passing yards that haven't had any success and don't even go to the playoffs, like Philip Rivers and guys like that. Drew Brees hasn't been to the playoffs in two years. So Russell Wilson is definitely an elite quarterback, and he can lead a team. ... I think Russell Wilson has done a great job of proving that he is up there at the top tier of players."

Pettine said Wilson is not quite in the top tier of quarterbacks before eventuallyclarifying his stance.

Wilson acknowledged Thursday that he heard Pettine's comments but downplayed them, saying he ignores the noise.

The Seahawks host the Browns on Sunday at CenturyLink Field.

What is wrong with Bennett's statement:

1) Using the two Super Bowl's as evidence that Wilson is elite. With the contract he was given and the players they are going to lose because of it, he may not sniff another any time soon.

2) Using Philip Rivers lack of Super Bowls as evidence that he is not.

3) Using Drew Brees' recent playoff drought as evidence that he is not.

4) "very elite"

What is wrong with Pettine's statement:

1) He is Mike Pettine

2) I am playing Russel Wilson this week in the semifinals of my cash league, you stupid bastard.

I agree. On top of the fact that everyone gives credit to the defense out in Seattle. The last 4 games Russell Wilson has 17 TD's 0 Int's and averaging just under 300 yards per game. Dude has been on fire the past month.

Wilson is a top tier QB in terms of intelligence. This guy knows where to go with the football. So if he throws 20 passer per game or 50, you know that either way you're in good hands if he's your QB. Thats elite whether Pettine wants to accept that or not.

Hardly said anything.  He defended the QB and sited the winning the team has had since he's been in the league.  Pretty tame response.

And totally right.  Same debate we all had when Seattle and Wilson were negotiating his extension.

He was elite before and proving it more this year as they've reinvented themselves and become more of Wilsons team than Lynch's team.

very elite....lol

my wife likes to say when she finds something "very unique".  During our first year of marriage, I tried to explain how there is no such thing as "very" unique.  Something is either unique or not.  There is no sliding scale of "uniqueness".  That was in 1987.  28 years later, she still says "very unique" and we have many "very unique" things in our house and I love anything that is "very" unique.

So maybe Wilson is "very" elite and will remain so for many years. :P

I dont know...I think maybe in strictest sense of Webster's dictionary you are right, but it seems to me that there are many things that would be more accurately described as very unique, just means it is even more rare. Each diamond is unique but the Hope Diamond is very unique, as there is really nothing else super similar. Things like that.

I think Pettine was largely correct in his assessment. It's just weird for a coach to say something like that about an opposing player... Not exactly coach speak.

Most people who use the term "elite" in discussing sports use it incorrectly. The fact that Joe Flacco is in any kind of discussion related to the term is ridiculous -- elite means the best of the best, top two or three players at the position.
