Case for Teddy?

This is where you completely lose me. Darnold just doesn't have anywhere near the question marks or red flags that guys like JaMarcus or Vince Young had. He's probably a better prospect than Big Ben, Stafford, or Wentz, too.

This is exactly the type of player you get into the starting lineup as quickly as you can. The Jets best chance to surprise people this year is Darnold starting and playing like he did in school. McCown and Teddy are both, really, just steady hands. Darnold's the only guy in that QB room that has the potential to be special.

And to be fair Slats, this is where you lose me.  I have been watching football for over 40 years, and I have watched AT LEAST a dozen can't-miss QB prospects who were selling cars within five years of entering the NFL.  I am just as excited as the next guy about what Darnold could do for this franchise over the next dozen years.  Might actually get to see the Jets win a Super Bowl before I kick the bucket.  But I see no reason to rush things, nor am putting all the proverbial eggs in one basket.  Jaded I know, but 40 years of Jets football will do that to you.  And I see no reason to not see what Teddy Bridgewater can do, as he could be another chess piece that could help us, either on the field or by garnering an even higher pick than most are hoping for.

Not that it matters, but I have your 40 years beat.

I think your mentality is a frightened one. You'd prefer fielding a guy whose ceiling is a less mobile Alex Smith over a guy whose ceiling is yet to be determined. If you want that Super Bowl in your lifetime, the team is going to have to make bold moves. If Darnold's a player, he's going to be a player. Playing as a rookie isn't going to ruin him. Playing is, in fact, the only way he's going to improve as an NFL QB. There's only so much to be learned from the sidelines.

And IF Teddy outplays them, he should start.  Again, I do not understand the viewpoint as to why this is bad.  I acknowledge it is a long shot;  I don't think his knee is going to withstand the pounding of the NFL game.  But what if it does, and what if he improves?  I don't get rid of him to stop a potential QB controversy.

You don't get rid of him to stop a potential QB controversy.  You get rid of him to get an asset for a guy who has almost no chance of being on the team in 2019.

Take it easy on Canada he still thinks Devin Smith was a good draft pick

Slats, I think we are all in an agreement that if Darnold shows any positive signs and keeps the QB competition close, he should be trotted out there from the getgo (shouldn’t even waste first 4 wks). But if it’s not close and TB plays lights out like he has in the off season, then TB should get the nod. If he continues that play in the regular season (leave the “one legged TB” agenda for another discussion), then TB should continue to start.

Whats the point of preparing Darnold? To be a good QB. Is that a guaranty? No. If TB plays like a good QB we envision Darnold to be, then why give up on him and ‘hope’ for Darnold? Where’s the rationale? Then you can extend Teddy and Darnold becomes your massive trade chip.

The whole point is to get a real QB that can play the next 10-15 years on our team. I don’t care if we have to call him TB or Darnold. I believe Canadian Steve’s thought process is that as well. Is that wrong a “frightening mentality”?

Exactly. JaMarcus was drafted #1 with huge question marks and with an incomplete evaluation by the Raiders.

All the others had big question marks as well.

Darnolds question mark was the turnovers, but even a short investigation shows it was not that big of an issue outside of the first few games. He is a remarkably clean prospect with no work ethic or off field concerns whatsoever. Soul and Science showed that not only does his elongated release not hurt him, he actually has one of the faster releases in the NFL, which eliminates the only other possible yellow flag, and dont forget Darnold had an almost perfect pro day throwing in the rain.

This entire thread is predicated on the concept of "what if BW plays lights out?" Well the odds of that are close to zero. He was never lights out even when healthy, and now his ability to sustain contact is very suspect.

During minicamp the Jets beat writers wanted their "story" to be Bridgewater outplaying the high draft pick. That storyline lasted 1 practice. Shorts or not Darnold was the best QB in minicamp and miles ahead of BW.

I'm not sure what reports you're reading. I've seen nothing that has Teddy being the best QB on the field. The praise for him has mostly been about how he's moving around well in that monster brace. The news has been about how all of the QBs look good, an unusual thing for the Jets. The other news is that Darnold is getting the same playbook work as his two veteran counterparts, and has not been overwhelmed. Pretty much every "wow" play has been from Darnold. Also, I don't know what the other QBs are doing right now, but Sam is at QB camp working on his game.

I'm sorry, but this is not even in the realm of possibility.

Teddy can be a good QB, and that's about his ceiling. I suspect that the Jets' brass has already made the evaluation that Sam Darnold is the most talented guy in the QB room. It's why they're throwing everything at him, and giving him the most work. It's why Darnold is getting significantly more work with the starters than Teddy, who got his first of the spring in front of reporters in the mandatory camp.

Sam was a much better prospect than Teddy was coming out of school, and he continues to be a much better prospect even with Bridgewater having two NFL seasons (and two seasons off) under his belt. Even if he's less "ready" than the veterans, you nurture that talent. You get it on the field. And not only is Sam's ceiling dramatically higher than Teddy's, but his contract will be at least $15-20M less than what you'd have to pay Bridgewater to start here for the next four years. That's a lot of cap currency. And if Teddy beat out Sam, how massive is his trade value? No one with the Jets is even considering Teddy as the starter.

Im sorry but that is maybe the most idiotic thing I have ever read.  It is absolutely a "frightening mentality", you actually WANT to settle for more mediocrity at the QB position. Putting your faith in a high level prospect, and taking the risk that he might fail just is too much for you and Canada that you actively want to crawl back into the safe waters of mediocrity. It is pathetic, and maybe it is just the Jets version of PTSD from all the QB horrors we have experienced. You cannot even comprehend the risk. It's like having this super hot girl that seems out of your league, going out of her way to say hi and "accidentally" run into you, touches you and plays with her hair when talking, but you are so afraid of being rejected that you call an escort service because it is safe. I finally understand you and Canada...it is just blind fear, even terror of the unknown. You can't make the leap, so you scrabble for some obscure scenario that avoids the risk.

Right, because that’s what I said when I wrote “get a real QB that can play the next 10-15 years on our team. Which mediocre QB has played on one team for a decade+ straight? What’s frightening is people saying it has to be Darnold or nothing.

Same nonsense. No one mentioned mediocre QB play. Problem is, you can’t fathom the idea of Darnold busting whereas I havent put Darnold in the FHoF list just yet. Not sure who’s more idiotic now, innit?

A “super hot girl” means a super hot girl without a doubt. Darnold on the other hand is a prospect that ‘might’ workout. Again, I haven’t added Darnold to the future hall of fame list yet like yourself (super hot girl Lololol)

‘All or nothing’ vs ‘better QB to start’. Hedging the risk. Since when has that been a “frightening mentality”?

If Sam Darnold can grasp Bates playbook he's the starter come September, simple as that. Read between the tea leaves folks, that sh*t eating grin Bowles had during OTAs wasn't because Teddy Bridgewater looked good but because Sam Darnold was slinging it & looking like the best QB on the roster.

Anyone who believes that a 39 year old QB who has won 7 games in 3 years should start over a concensus #1 pick in the NFL draft is crazy. Darnold sat as most people's top QB in what was called the best QB class since 1982. No one knows if that statement is true but you only need to go back & look at Sam Darnolds private workout in the rain at USC. Observers in attendance came out of that workout stating his workout firmly planted him as the #1 player coming off the board in the 2018 draft. Darnold will prove in the preseason that a 39 year old journeyman & an average NFL QB with a spaghetti knee are no match for this 21 year old phenom. My god people, it's not like hes competing with Brett Favre (Aaron Rogers), Drew Bledsoe (Brady), Alex Smith (Mahomes).

Hes competing with a 39 year old journeyman that has won 7 games in three f*cking years! SEVEN! How in the world does anyone come to the conclusion Darnold shouldn't start come September? We're getting this kid ready to DOMINATE the AFC East starting in 2019 when we surround him with even more talent with our league leading salary cap dollars and another draft.

Do you realize the excitement at MetLife when Jet fans get to see their new QB standing behind center? They could be witnessing the beginning of a 12-15 year run that will make SAR 1 investment in PSLs finally pay off!

Teddy sucks! Stop the nonsense

Lol you make me laugh. Again I’m not saying it actually would work. But trying to create  “ a buzz “ in camp on a player certainly doesn’t hurt or cost anything at all. Do you agree teams are more inclined to want a player they think the other team doesn’t want to trade ? They would pay less for a player if that team was actively looking to trade him. Why pay top dollar if you have to ?
Tell me if all of this is too far over your head.
If Jets create the buzz teddy is for real, and may actually be the starter that will certainly “ could” help the jets  cause in a trade . The problem is gms and we as fans should know it’s very hard to tell in playing in shorts with zero contact if a player is ok back from a major injury. Nobody knows what TB can do until the real preseason games.
Did you not find it quite amusing Todd Bowles said the jets were considering 6-7 players for the draft “after “ getting the 3rd pick ? Answer that question yes or no. Did you not take that as complete bs ? But Did the jet reporters just report take him at his word and report it, without totally blasting him And calling Todd Bowles a funny comedian.

What is it with you & teddy?

And no, I did not check the rate in baseball.  But I could.  You may disagree and say comparing sports is apples to oranges, but I again will disagree.  We don't HAVE to agree on this.
My stance has been since drafting the kid:
If Bridgewater is playing equal to McCown, start Bridgewater.  It could increase his trade value.  There is NO benefit to this team in starting McCown.  NONE.  Let Darnold come in slowly.  Don't need to rush it.  IF that meant him sitting a whole year because Bridewater started and played as good/slightly better where he left off, then leave him in.  If not, Darnold should start and some point this season, because we are not doing anything anyway, and get some real-game experience.
My other comments were, and I stated, that this is another great example as to questioning why the NFL does not have a developmental league like sports like MLB and NHL.  I believe the reasoning behind lower failure rates with higher picks is they get real-game experience at a minor league level, hone their skills, and then make the jump to 'pro' status (elite pro if you will, as you are a 'professional' in high enough levels in minor league ball and hockey.
Sorry if I have come across as hostile, but I have stated my reasoning's multiple times with multiple guys.  It is fine to disagree, but when people are stating, for the 5th time, I have not stated WHY I think this way, when clearly I did give my reasoning's, it gets annoying

Teddy seems like a good guy but how many guys have come back from a knee explosion like his that caused a 2 year recovery?

Everything we hear from the Jets is designed to inflate his trade value

Teddy was available to every NFL team and the Jets signed him for peanuts.

He's a Longshot to make the roster if they can trade him it will be surprising because the Jets only have a few chances to audition him before they have to give reps to Darnold.

Having him hold off McCown and Darnold and be the starter would be a miracle

I’m a little confused when people say we should trade Teddy Bridgewater (TB2). There are a few issues with that. He’s either healthy or he’s not. If he’s not healthy, he has no trade value. If he’s healthy, then he’s either playing well or he’s not. If he plays bad in preseason, he has no value. If he plays well, then we shouldn’t trade him.

This brings me to my main point. If TB2 plays lights out in the preseason, we need to start him and be committed to him until the wheels come off. Having a good QB was the only reason Jets traded up to the third. If TB2 ends up being what we hope Darnold would be, then TB2 should stay as long as he’s good. Let Darnold learn and only let him start at any point in the future when he’s better than TB2, whether that’s in 4 games, or 4 years (assuming we resign of course)

Why should the Jets trade TB2 if he’s healthy and plays in the season like he has all off-season? We need a franchise QB and I don’t care one bit if that’s Darnold or TB.

Teddy's "success" this off season is overstated (and that is probably because the jets want it to be overstated to pump up his potential trade value).  No physical contact. He made some good throws and mostly to 2nd teamers as McCown and Darnold got the majority of snaps to the 1st team unit..  He has yet to play like a franchise QB in the NFL during a season.  He was "game-manager" (as some will put it)  caliber before his injury.  Let's see how he does when he is running for his life with that bionic leg of his.  This vision you have of his talents is pretty far the reality IMO.

“He has yet to play like a franchise QB in the NFL” ...in his first two seasons. Still made the pro bowl in year two so I’m not sure what a franchise QB is supposed to do in his first two seasons. Not every FQB is Dan Marino, but somehow it’s only Teddy that’s needs to prove that while Darnold gets enshrined into the FHOF list. If Darnold can become a pro-bowl caliber QB, I’d be stoked. Whereas TB is already a PB QB. Again, and I’m gonna say this the very last time since it somehow escapes your brain, if, and a big if that is, TB outplays Darnold by a good margin and puts together a winning streak, I’ll be hoping he would play all 16 games.

I have a problem with this "Franchise QB" sh*t.  None of these ****ers is a franchise QB. There are very few.  I understand there are differing definitions, but calling a guy who is a borderline starter a franchise QB is moronic.  Tyrod Taylor is not a franchise QB.

Stop with the ******* initials already.  TB is Tom Brady.  Even Bridgewater knows that. Do you just say "Jeter" when you mean this guy?

Is it even morally responsible to use this guy in actual games?  If he takes one bad hit he could lose his leg for good
