ATLANTA -- Filling one of their biggest remaining offseason needs, the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday afternoon reached an agreement to acquire New Orleans left offensive tackle Wayne Gandy in a trade that sends three-year veteran safety Bryan Scott and an undisclosed draft choice to the Saints. s2913.jpgGandy

The trade, unusual in that it involves division rivals, is expected to be completed on Friday when the pertinent paperwork is forwarded to the league offices.

The Falcons lost starting left tackle Kevin Shaffer to the Cleveland Browns as an unrestricted free agent in the opening days of the signing period and, even before his departure, they were looking to upgrade at the position. ESPN.com reported Friday in its "Tip Sheet" column that Atlanta officials had spoken to the San Francisco 49ers about the possibility of acquiring former first-round draft choice Kwame Harris in a trade, and that the Falcons were also keeping an eye on Gandy's situation.

New Orleans nearly released Gandy last spring after he declined to restructure his contract, and there had been recent rumblings the Saints no longer had the 12-year veteran in their plans for 2006. The Saints are scheduled to begin a mandatory mini-camp on Friday under rookie head coach Sean Payton, and clearly New Orleans officials wanted to resolve Gandy's status before that.

In addition to Harris and Gandy, the Falcons also met with free agent tackles, including Brad Hopkins (Tennessee), Torrin Tucker (Dallas) and Todd Steussie (Tampa Bay).

In Gandy, the Falcons are acquiring a 35-year-old veteran who played at a very high level in 2005, and who should be able to provide Atlanta a couple more good seasons. Landing him allows the Falcons to take time to develop Frank Omiyale. A fifth-round selection from Tennessee Tech in 2005, Omiyale did not play a single snap as a rookie, but Falcons coaches love his potential and view him as their starter of the future.

Omiyale is very raw, however, and now the Falcons are under no urgency to force him into the lineup. Also, the addition of Gandy, who makes his offseason home in Atlanta, will give Omiyale a patient veteran tutor. Gandy is known as a high-character player whose presence in the locker room will be welcomed by the Falcons coaches and players.

Gandy has three seasons remaining on his contract, at base salaries of $4 million for 2006 and $3.5 million each for 2007 and 2008. It is not yet known if his contract was adjusted as part of the trade.

In 12 seasons, Gandy, a first-round choice of the then-Los Angeles Rams in 1994, has appeared in 191 games and started in 184 of them. Since 1995, his second year in the league, the former Auburn star has started at least 15 games every season. His career has included stints with the Rams (1994-98), Steelers (1999-2002) and Saints (2003-2005).

It remains to be seen how the Saints, who have now lost three offensive line starters in the offseason, will replace him. One option might be to move Jammal Brown, the team's first-round choice in 2005 and an immediate starter at right tackle as a rookie, to the left side. Another might be to use the second overall pick in the draft to select a tackle. The Saints lost Pro Bowl center LeCharles Bentley to Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent and recently released guard Kendyl Jacox.

Scott, 25, was the Falcons' second-round choice in 2003, but the former Penn State standout has never played up to his draft status. The Falcons' offseason additions of veteran safeties Lawyer Milloy and Chris Crocker, and the initiative to make a wholesale overhaul at the position, made Scott extraneous. In his three seasons in Atlanta, Scott registered 221 tackles, four interceptions, 13 passes defensed, 3

With the second pick in the 2006 NFL Draft the Saints select D'Brickeshaw Fergeson.

Yeah.

Which means either Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, Vince Young, Mario Williams or trade down for the Jets at 4.

Quik.... are you slow? Ferguson is a very good pass blocker, and a below average run blocker. His value is in being on the QB's blind side.
To his defense, if they draft D'Brick they will move him to RT. With a Left Handed QB, the role of the RT is the exact mirror of a LT with a right handed QB. So D'Brick's role ill be exactly the same, and he'll do what he normally does best which is protect the passer. It's not nearly as dramatic a change as if he were moved to RT with a right handed QB, in which case his role as a blocker would be significantly different and play right into his weakness.

I got a bad feeling we're going to take a QB in the first round...I can see D'Brick going to Orleans and every so called expert has said Super Mario doesn't fit well in the 3/4 scheme.

Anyone else see this happening? Unless the Jets see someone else in mind that we haven't considered...you know, one of those surprise picks?

How do you figure Mario is not a good fit in a 3/4 scheme? He is 6'-7" and 285 lbs. That screams out 3/4 defensive end. Can rush the passer and big enough for run support in the 3/4. Not so big that he cant slide to rush end in a 43 either

Whoever these so-called experts are, they need to seek a new career.

Mario is perfect to play in either a 3-4 defense or a 4-3.I live in North Carolina and watched him play alot and he can play both.NC States coaches even lined him up at defensive tackle in the 4-3 on pass rushing downs sometimes and he still got to the QB.This guy is an animal and is even stronger than Peppers when he came out,not quite as quick off the snap, but definitely stronger.I would like this pick alot if we can get a BIG defensive tackle later in the draft.

good point? might I ask you what good is your rt when your quarterbacks our right-handed?

Went right over your head. All I am saying is you generally like to have your best tackle covering the QBs blind side. So therefore it doesn't make sense spending alot of money on a guy that plays on the opposite side. No? That's pretty much football 101.

Well, I posted a Q & A session between Dan Leberfeld and Mel Kiper the other night...now, some like Kiper and some don't...but, he's not the only one that feels this way about Super Mario...here's Leberfeld's question and Kiper's response...

Q)Some mock drafts have North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams going four to the Jets. Don

Read my previous post ALK, I think you know better than to simplify it like this.

ok, a little over-my head, but in our div., we need a good lt. In our div. we face Simeon Rice, Will Smith, and Mike Rucker in 3 games. now outside of Julius peppers and patrick kerney (whos on our team) there is not very many good ends on the left-side in our div. Also, if we were to switch him to left-side, that'd mean we'd have to switch weiner to the right, and thats not as easy as a transistion as you think.

This was a great trade for the falcons. Gandy is a solid starter at the least and Bryan Scott has basically been a bust for the falcons. hes started, but since mid 04-05 season, hes been afraid to lay the wood on people, and thats where the falcons safety problems have been. and with the signing of milloy and trade for crocker, he was a back-up to milloy. the real question I have is why did the Saints make this trade? I understand that they were looking at releasing gandy, but why Bryan Scott and a S at that? They have dwight smith as one of their safeties and their other is their 2nd round pick from last year, Josh Bullocks.

edit: and also, where are you getting the "spending alot of money" part when we traded for him?

That is a TERRIBLE trade for Atlanta. Wayne Gandy is complete garbage. He's a walking penalty flag. Seeing him go against Simeon Rice twice a year has been comedy at its finest. I'm just a little upset because I won't get to see him every week anymore.

a jets fan knows this how? and even if this is true, you want to see comedy? try watching Bryan Scott trying to tackle someone...

Yes, a Jets fan that lives in Louisiana knows it quite well.

well, zone blocking scheme should help him out, but if hes a bust for us, so be it, Bryan Scott has been for us. His Rook year he showed flashes of greatness, but ever since he got a concussion in his 2nd year, hasn't tackled well since.

Yeah, I'm just letting you know what to expect. Lots of penalties, getting murdered by speed rushers, and having the world's largest face mask.

He was Pro-Bowl caliber in Pittsburgh a few years ago. Maybe it was just the curse of playing for the Saints. You should hope so.

thats a good point, I can't think of more than 2 good pick-ups by the Saints in the last 5 year, excluding this year (haven't seen them play yet), that have panned out. bad coaching maybe?

is his "sucking" mostly of late. you can't forget the fact that hurrican katrina impacted the Saints season tremendously.

No, he sucked the year before too. It wasn't as noticeable though because he had Victor Riley, the worst offensive lineman of all-time, playing alongside him.

Let's see..........................

The Saints signed Drew Brees to play QB.............................................

The Saints have two first round picks in Will Smith and Charles Grant at DE...

The Saints just traded their left tackle...............................................

The Saints at #2 in the draft

All signs are pointing towards D'Brick for them.
