HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Even though the regular season is two weeks away, Jets coach Eric Mangini insists he hasn't chosen a starting quarterback.

Those who thought Mangini would finally choose between Chad Pennington, Patrick Ramsey, Brooks Bollinger and rookie Kellen Clemens on Sunday were disappointed.

"All four of those guys need to be ready to play Friday," Mangini said, referring to the preseason finale against Philadelphia. "That's the way we're going to approach the week with all the players. They need to be ready to play for as long as we decide to keep them in the game."

Asked if he might not announce a starter even in the days before the Sept. 10 opener at the Tennessee Titans, Mangini said, "It would depend on whether someone has distinguished himself by the time we get to Tennessee."

Such indecision might bother players on some other teams, but Pennington, who started the 13-7 loss to the Giants on Friday night, said "It's not that big of an issue."

"Everything's new here," Pennington said. "Coach understands the situation and he'll make the decision when he feels the time is right."

Pennington said he thought all the quarterbacks on the roster had the same perspective.

"We all feel we're starters and when our number is called we are the starter," he said. "We have to prepare that way."

Pennington still appears to be the favorite for the starting job as the preseason winds down. After returning from Knoxville, Tenn., where he visited his ill father early last week, he got his second preseason start and went the longest of any Jets quarterback this summer.

The performance had its ups and downs. The Jets scored no points in his eight drives, nor in the two drives he directed in the preseason opener at Tampa Bay.

But almost 11 months after his second rotator cuff surgery of 2005, Pennington looked sharper on some passes against the Giants than he did most of last summer, when he was still coming off his first shoulder surgery.

"There were some throws I made that I hadn't been able to make in a while," he said. "Especially on the post throws, I haven't had the confidence in making them. Being able to do that in a game really gives me confidence."

On two of those post routes, Pennington hit Justin McCareins for a 40-yard catch-and-run and Laveranues Coles for 17 yards. Both completions converted third downs.

Notes

Mangini said he singled out the play of RB Derrick Blaylock, TE Chris Baker, rookie C Nick Mangold, DT Dewayne Robertson and LB Jonathan Vilma when he spoke to the team Sunday morning. ... The Jets waived 12 players to get down to the 75-man roster limit ahead of the NFL's Tuesday deadline. The only players cut with pro experience were cornerbacks Rayshun Reed and D.J. Johnson and LB Alonzo Jackson.

How about giving Ramsey some reps with the 1st team offense?

If Chad gets all the reps with the 1st team O and stinks it up again, and is named starter, I will be pissed off.

Who are you kidding? You'll be pissed off no matter what.

Ramsey is not the answer. Give it to Chad, let Clemens sit 4 games, then get him in there.

Chad, Bollinger, Ramsey: None of them are taking us to a SB in the next 5 years.

Lets see what Clemens is made of.

I really think this is the game plan. Seeing Clemens get into the game last week after Chad was a bit of a surprise.

Ramsey may not be the long term answer, but the bottom line is that he gives us the best chance to win at the time being.

Sure, Ramsey may turn the ball over than Chad, but how easy is it for other team's to gameplan against us whenever we send a quarterback with less arm strength than Jamie Moyer out there? With Chad, the offense is VERY limited in what they can do.

Dude Ramsey sucks, get over it.

Says a guy who took his screen name from Justin FN McCareins.

I'm pretty sure that's irony. I'll have to ask Alanis Morrisette for clarification. But that post above, man, that is like rain on your wedding day.

Ramsey started the second game, what exactly did he do? How many first downs? I mean they have all pretty much sucked so far, but I have seen ABSOLUTELY nothing from Ramsey that makes me think he can run an NFL offense.

Ramsey was dinking and dunking as well. He didn't do too well when given the opportunity. The only thing he accomplished was getting in the way during that reverse and springing Smith. He did nothing in the passing game.

There is the correct answer.

But Clemens needs to sit more than 4 games.

Start him after the bye week.

I hope we can attribute this to the offense being vanilla in the preseason. Dinking and dunking is fine, but there has still got to be the threat of the long ball. With Chad, that threat is as intimidating as a baby lamb.

And which of our wide receivers has the ability to get deep? Coles and McGuy are glorified possesion receivers, Dwight has never been productive, Cotchery isn't fast enough. Newhouse is a rookie.

Arm strength is not the most important quality for a qb. If it was Joe Gilliam would have won 3 SBs instead of Terry Bradshaw.

Bottom line is that if the WRs can't get separation, it doesn't matter how strong you arm is.

I hate to say this, but I think Tx is right about our offense. In 3 preseason games, they've scored one touchdown, on an end-around. It's going to be a long year.

Thank God! Somebody else realizes how big of a handicap Chad is.

The guy cannot lead a team to touchdowns with 3 yard slants and dumpoffs. It doesnt #%#ing work, people. If we want to actually get some touchdowns we'd put Ramsey in to start to the season.

The bad news is that no one has been outstanding to grab the spot and the good news is we keep Titans guessing on our QB.

I can go with that. I don't expect Mangini to name the starter until about 3 days before the opener.

I'm going with Chad on this one. If he can't get it done within the game plan geared towards HIM, I expect to see Clemens when the season is lost on paper. Just a feeling. Our situation is a difficult one, but the cream will separate between this year and next. No worries.

Ramsey showed nothing when he was in there...except that he can get in the way on a reverse. Stop creaming over the fact that he has a strong arm. Arm strength means nothing if your accuracy is ****.
